Bar's eyes widened, as though he simply could not believe what he was seeing. At first, he had thought these people were merely putting on a show, but the flesh growing over those skeletons gave him a vivid sense of life. They had actually restored flesh and blood to skeletons that had already become undead creatures.

Leaving everything else aside, if these people went beyond the Great Desert, that ability alone would let them conquer cities and seize territory with ease. It was not as though masters of necromancy had never appeared on the continent before. Such people were naturally skilled at summoning vast numbers of undead, and some had entertained the idea of carving out a domain for themselves with an army of the dead.

But undead creatures were fundamentally incompatible with humans. If you wanted to attack someone, you could only send your undead army charging in openly. And then... don't get ahead of yourself. You might be able to summon more undead than other mages could summon creatures, but could you summon ten thousand? Twenty thousand?

When others simply defended from atop their city walls, unless your numbers could utterly overwhelm them, you could forget about it.

They could cover their undead subordinates in flesh, infiltrate the enemy's city, and wait for an opportunity to strike from within and without. Even if other cities learned of it, they would only become suspicious of one another. The effects would be excellent. Bar gave a low shout, and the holy spear flashed into his hand. He looked ready to ensure that none of these people left the hall alive.
