Background / History
Kimimaro spends his early childhood imprisoned in a dark cell, isolated and questioning whether his life has any purpose. His Shikotsumyaku is already active: he extends a bone from his fingertip to carve grooves into the floor. At seven, a Kaguya clansman releases him and orders him to join the clan’s attack on Kirigakure 249.
During the rebellion, Kimimaro kills several Kirigakure ninja before being cornered. Rather than reacting to their threats, he watches a flower being covered by snow and compares its likely death to his own. Gong Yi intervenes, declaring that the boy he has chosen is not theirs to kill. The rebellion ends with the destruction of the Kaguya Clan, leaving Kimimaro as its surviving orphan 250 362.
Mei Terumi attempts to prevent Gong Yi from taking him away, arguing that the defeated clan’s remaining member must also be eliminated. Gong Yi refuses and brings Kimimaro to Konoha. He values the boy’s combat talent, treats his Kekkei Genkai Disease, and chooses the Eight Inner Gates as the foundation of his future training 251.
Kekkei Genkai Disease
- Cause: Harmful effects associated with his exceptionally powerful bloodline ability. Gong Yi predicts that, untreated, Kimimaro will not survive to adulthood 249.
- Treatment: Medical Ninjutsu combined with the Rejuvenation Technique eliminates his existing symptoms 251.
- Maintenance: Gong Yi believes annual treatment will suppress further flare-ups and make survival beyond sixteen achievable. The treatment is presented as ongoing suppression, not a permanent cure 251.
Appearance
- White hair, green eyes, and two red forehead markings distinguish him from his introduction 249.
- Initially wears the Kaguya Clan’s distinctive clothing 251.
- Carries the Konoha emblem at his waist during his encounter with Roshi 331.
- Appears in white robes when protecting Sasuke in the Forest of Death, and later in Anbu uniform while reporting to Gong Yi 408 432.
- His combat transformations expose dense bone spurs across his body. Gate activation produces green steam, changing to blue when he opens the seventh gate 254 332 413.
Personality
Kimimaro is usually cold, quiet, and difficult to approach. He initially does not know how to make friends and regards Neji primarily as another disciple of his master. His demeanor changes noticeably around Gong Yi: he smiles, answers readily, and repeatedly frames his efforts around serving his teacher without disappointing him 254 364 366.
His desire to prove himself can become dangerous pride. Academy praise and prolonged training encourage overconfidence, while his confrontation with Roshi exposes gaps in experience. When exhausted, he considers risking his life by pushing the Eight Inner Gates further rather than appearing inadequate before Gong Yi. The encounter subsequently makes him more humble and conscious of his limitations 329 332 343.
He remains composed under threats, explosions, and close combat. As his experience grows, he also demonstrates deliberate cruelty when carrying out Gong Yi’s plans: he mocks and harasses Gaara specifically to cultivate hatred, rather than seeking an immediate victory 250 370 407.
Abilities & Skills
Shikotsumyaku
Kimimaro’s Kekkei Genkai allows him to manipulate bones throughout his body, including bone-forming and bone-resorbing cells, calcium concentration, density, and hardening. He can grow, reshape, withdraw, and regenerate skeletal material for attack or defense 254 330.
- Finger Bullet Drill / Ten-Finger Drilling Bullets: Fires finger bones as high-speed projectiles. They penetrate rock, and the expended bones regenerate 330 331.
- Bone Blade: Produces a handheld blade for close combat; he uses it to destroy Orochimaru’s venomous snakes 254 408.
- Bone Shield: Uses high-density skeletal compression to form a protective barrier. Developed and taught by Gong Yi, it blocks Roshi’s kunai and protects Kimimaro from a chain of explosions 330 370.
- Dance of the Larch: Erupts sharp bones from his body for defensive coverage and counterattacks. He uses it against Neji’s Gentle Fist, Rasa’s sandstorm, and the Kumogakure ambushers 263 412 465.
- Dance of the Willow: Combines slender bone blades with fluid Taijutsu. With the first three Gates open, it cuts through Roshi’s lava projectiles 332 374 375.
- Dance of the Clematis: Forms a thick bone spike for a charging attack against Neji 263.
- Vertebrae Whip: Extracts his spine as a white, barbed whip during the battle with Rasa 413.
- Dance of the Cleavers: Transforms his arm into a massive Spiral Bone Sword. He attacks Rasa from beneath and pierces his body during a coordinated ambush 414.
- Dance of the Camellia: Draws a bone blade from his left arm and uses it to meet Gaara’s transformed claw in close combat 425.
Limits demonstrated in battle:
- Bone projectiles can be absorbed by Gaara’s sand defense 425.
- Roshi’s Earth Style Wall withstands a thrown bone spur despite Kimimaro’s three-gate enhancement 332.
- Strong defenses do not prevent him from being deceived or cornered by experienced opponents 330 375 377.
Eight Inner Gates
Gong Yi teaches Kimimaro the Eight Inner Gates to amplify his Taijutsu and exploit the structural support provided by Shikotsumyaku 251 413.
- Opens three gates to survive Roshi’s combined Earth and Lava Style attack 332.
- Receives a practical five-gate demonstration from Gong Yi and is later encouraged to begin working toward the sixth gate 334 343.
- Opens through the seventh gate during the fight with Rasa, gaining a major increase in strength and speed 412 413.
- Physical conditioning and reinforced bones help him withstand the seventh gate, but its aftereffects still require recovery. Gong Yi’s medical care is expected to prevent lasting injuries 413 415.
- Opening the final gate is an ambition Gong Yi considers, not a documented achievement 251.
Taijutsu and Combat Analysis
Kimimaro integrates bone weapons directly into his punches, kicks, movement, and defensive counters 254 375.
- Exploits flaws in Neji’s defense through experience gained in actual combat 254.
- Applies Gong Yi’s instruction to identify the Hunting Trio’s changing priorities and recognize himself as their main target 374.
- Coordinates with Neji to feign defeat and launch the killing ambush against Rasa 414.
- Suppresses Gaara’s partially transformed form through precise successive attacks, though he cannot immediately penetrate its defenses 425.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Life-Saving Scroll: An experimental protective item given by Gong Yi. Specific hand seals release a stored clone and a Gold Style strike. A trace of Divine Sense disappears upon activation, alerting Gong Yi that Kimimaro is in danger 370 377.
- Bone weapons: Generates his own swords, spikes, projectiles, shield, and vertebrae whip rather than relying exclusively on carried weapons 330 413 414.
- Anbu uniform: Worn while reporting on Sunagakure’s delegation after Gong Yi assumes leadership of Konoha 432.
Relationships
- Gong Yi — Rescuer, medical caretaker, teacher, and superior. Kimimaro’s loyalty centers on him; Gong Yi repeatedly protects him and eventually trusts him to act as his representative 250 251 333 377 403.
- Neji Hyuga — Fellow disciple, sparring rival, and combat partner. Their severe training develops mutual respect, and they later defeat Rasa together 254 263 342 414.
- Sarutobi Asuma — Former squad leader. Asuma tries unsuccessfully to win him over, but protects and coordinates with him during the disastrous first mission 366 373 374.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Initially resists his proposed Anbu entry because Kimimaro’s loyalty would give Gong Yi access to classified village affairs. Assigning him to Asuma’s squad is an attempt to redirect that loyalty 362 364.
- Mei Terumi — Attempts to prevent his departure from Kirigakure after the Kaguya rebellion. Kimimaro later retains complicated feelings toward the village, dominated by lingering hatred 251 318.
- Orochimaru — Initially interested in his bloodline and potential. Later recognizes Gong Yi’s influence over him and withdraws when Kimimaro intervenes to protect Sasuke 249 337 408.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Junior fellow disciple whom Kimimaro protects on Gong Yi’s orders, preventing Orochimaru from biting him in the Forest of Death 403 408 424.
- Gaara — Deliberately provoked enemy. Kimimaro becomes the focus of Gaara’s hatred and uses that fixation to draw him toward Gong Yi’s planned confrontation with Shukaku 407 424 425.
- Aburame Tianluo and Yueguang Quanfeng — Teammates under Asuma. Tianluo dies in an explosion; Kimimaro subsequently helps defend Quanfeng against the Hunting Trio 366 370 373.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Training and the Four-Tails Encounter
- Gong Yi uses repeated sparring with Neji to develop both disciples. Their training becomes severe enough that they exchange serious injuries, alarming Asuma 254 263.
- Kimimaro accompanies Gong Yi to confront Roshi as a combat trial. He survives the opening traps and lava barrage but reaches his limits, requiring Gong Yi’s intervention 327 330 332 333.

Asuma’s Squad and the Hunting Trio
- His first squad assignment is a C-rank mission through the Land of Rain toward the Land of Birds 366.
- A chain of explosions kills Tianluo while Kimimaro survives inside his Bone Shield. Asuma terminates the mission 370.
- The Hunting Trio attacks the surviving team. Kimimaro fights Third, becomes the trio’s main target, and uses his emergency scroll 373 374 375 377.
- During the retreat, he kills Second but falls for Third’s clone deception. Gong Yi arrives before the fatal attack and warns him against underestimating enemies 377.
Chunin Exams and Rasa’s Death
- Gong Yi enters him in the Chunin Exams primarily to execute assignments, not to gain promotion or meaningful training 403.
- Kimimaro provokes Gaara without killing him, creating a psychological trigger for Shukaku’s later emergence. He also prevents Orochimaru from placing a curse mark on Sasuke 407 408 424.
- During the interval before the finals, he and Neji fight Rasa under Gong Yi’s supervision. Kimimaro opens the seventh gate, and their feigned defeat leads into a coordinated attack that kills the Fourth Kazekage 409 411 413 414.
Konoha Crush and Anbu Operations
- During the invasion, Kimimaro follows Gong Yi’s plan to lure Gaara to Konoha’s outskirts. He redirects Gaara’s attention from Team Seven, briefly suppresses his partial transformation, and withdraws to draw pursuit 424 425.
- After Gong Yi becomes acting Hokage, Kimimaro reports on Sunagakure’s delegation and exercises increasing authority within the Anbu 432.
- He later leads the collection of Sunagakure’s supplies using giant eagles summoned by his squad members. When Kumogakure ninja ambush the transport operation, he defeats them alone and orders their bodies returned for the Hokage’s decision 464 465.
