Background / History

Phainon originated in Aedes Elysiae, a peaceful village surrounded by wheat fields. As a child, he wanted only to be the “little hero” who protected his village. Before the village's destruction, he met Bai Yuan in a Coreflame vision and asked to call him his partner. 29 30

Aedes Elysiae was consumed by the Black Tide, which warped its people, animals, and land into monsters. Phainon stood alone against the catastrophe, eventually becoming the Coreflame-bearing Savior who would endure repeated cycles in an attempt to change the outcome. 29 30

The cycles gradually fractured him. In one failed cycle, he absorbed all Coreflames himself, losing his friends and failing his mission. In later cycles, the accumulated Fire Seeds, memories, and experience shattered the “perfect vessel,” creating the broken Black Calamity—a being driven by instinct to hunt Coreflames, kill successive Phainons, and restart the cycle. 36 47

Bai Yuan awakens the Worldbearing Coreflame and Dawn-Invading Sword in Douluo Continent. The Fire Seed grants him Phainon's sword instincts and memories, while its voice eventually identifies itself as “Phainon of Aedes Elysiae.” Bai Yuan resolves to work with Xiao Bai to break the cycle and oppose the forces treating the world as a chessboard. 2 25 30 31

The narrative later uses “Phainon” for Bai Yuan in present-day events, though the visions continue to distinguish Bai Yuan from the original Xiao Bai. Their connection is defined by the Coreflame, inherited memories, and a shared commitment to change the world. 29 31 47 102

Personality

Before the fall of Aedes Elysiae, Phainon is gentle, considerate, and openly eager to make friends. He covers a sleeping stranger with his jacket, quickly calls Bai Yuan a partner, and initially dreams only of protecting his village rather than becoming a grand hero. 29 30

As the Savior, he accepts a burden far beyond that childhood ideal. He continues moving through repeated failures, betrayal, and loss, even when others call him a demon for taking their Coreflames. His determination is rooted in responsibility rather than certainty of success. 30 36 86

Black Calamity represents the consequence of that endurance pushed past its limit. After killing successive versions of himself through countless cycles, he becomes emotionally numb and loses pieces of his humanity. 36 47

Bai Yuan retains more warmth and initiative than the exhausted Savior memories he inherits.
