The Scourge floating fortresses, now armored with steel plates, were no longer something the Judgment Army's Light cannons could pierce. The Light and lasers were fundamentally different, after all. With their weapon advantage gone, the airships were completely outmatched against the floating fortresses, and the Judgment Army's aerial superiority was being erased.
Before they lost their advantage in the air entirely, the Judgment Army headquarters decided to launch a large-scale offensive against the Scourge before winter ended. They would attack Angrathar the Wrathgate to weaken the Scourge, making it easier for the Alliance and Horde to reclaim land and farm in Northrend once spring arrived, beginning a prolonged campaign.
The Judgment Army had undertaken such a major operation because news had arrived from Ulduar in the north: The Scourge was plundering Titan ruins underground, and its battle against the Old God's minions had reached a fever pitch. If they obtained the technology within those Titan ruins and armed their already shell-like floating fortresses with it, it would be a disaster.
In addition to attacking Angrathar the Wrathgate from the outskirts, the Judgment Army also planned to launch a surprise raid on Ulduar, striking both the Scourge and the Old God at once. They would also see if they could acquire some Titan technology from the ruins in order to further arm the Judgment Army.
To ensure the operation went smoothly, both the Alliance and Horde recommended their finest warriors. To deal with Yogg-Saron, the Old God beneath Ulduar, Zul'ra had specifically drawn on his experience fighting in Ahn'Qiraj. He recalled a number of warlocks, prepared a batch of fel bombs, and even persuaded the Red Dragonflight to join the operation.
