Guardian of Tirisfal

Aegwynn inherited the accumulated power of generations of Guardians, becoming the strongest Guardian in the Council of Tirisfal's history. Her Guardian power kept her ageless while she hunted Burning Legion forces across Azeroth; she was also credited with slaying an avatar of Sargeras. 37 53

Before becoming Guardian, Aegwynn faced persistent doubt from the Council because she was a woman. Though she continued protecting Azeroth, this treatment left her resentful of the Council's restrictions and control. 53

When the Council demanded that she relinquish the Guardian mantle in favor of a more obedient successor, Aegwynn instead resolved to pass her legacy to her own child, free from Council control. 53

Life as “Aviana”

Aegwynn entered Stormwind under the identity of Aviana, presenting herself as a striking mage with exceptional knowledge of Quel'Thalas. Her disguise included sophisticated charm magic that briefly affected Karen Sunstrider and was suspected of influencing Nielas Aran as well. 50 51

She chose Archmage Nielas Aran as the father of her intended heir, then married him in a private royal-palace ceremony under her Aviana identity. 53 57 During her pregnancy, she withdrew from public life with Aran. 58 59

Conflict with the Council

To keep the Council away from Stormwind while she was vulnerable during pregnancy, Aegwynn infiltrated its Tirisfal stronghold, breached its defenses, and stole Ebony Chill, the frost staff of the first Guardian, Alodi. 54

She deliberately used the theft to draw the Council into pursuing her. After leading them toward Quel'Thalas and out to sea, she planted false trails intended to keep them occupied for a year. 55

Aegwynn concealed Ebony Chill and the retired Guardian staff Atiesh in a heavily warded base near Deadwind Pass, then returned to Stormwind without Aluneth to avoid drawing attention. 55

Medivh's Birth and Departure

After Feron likely discovered her identity when her pregnancy disrupted her disguise, Aegwynn revealed herself to Karen as the Guardian of Azeroth. She asked him to explain the truth to Aran and protect him while she hid from the Council. 60 61

Aegwynn gave birth to Medivh and transferred most of her Guardian power into him. The transfer reduced her own strength to only slightly above Hero rank, leaving her unable to protect both Aran and Medivh from the Council. 62

She left Medivh with Aran, entrusted Karen with the family's safety, and gave him a communicator for emergencies. 62 Although she initially viewed Aran and Medivh as means to create an heir, she came to genuinely love them and left precisely because she believed separation would keep them safe. 62

Later Events

Aegwynn later confronted Sargeras, but both underestimated the other; neither could defeat the other, resulting in a stalemate and her withdrawal. 192

When she reunited with Medivh years later, she admitted that she had passed Sargeras' influence to him and apologized for failing him as a mother. 205

After Medivh's death, Aegwynn continued acting as a mentor, training Khadgar toward the Hero realm when Karen finally came to tell her of Medivh's fate. 278

Personality

Aegwynn is fiercely independent and unwilling to submit to authority she considers restrictive. Her conflict with the Council stems not only from its attempt to replace her, but from its long-standing distrust of her judgment and gender. 53

She is highly calculating under pressure. Rather than fight the Council directly while pregnant, she turned Ebony Chill into bait, constructed a prolonged false trail, and used her hidden base to remove the artifact from their reach. 54 55

Despite her guarded and manipulative methods, Aegwynn is deeply attached to her family. She concealed her identity from Aran, yet later trusted Karen to tell him the truth; she also accepted the pain of leaving Medivh behind because she believed it was necessary for their safety. 60 62

Her reunion with Medivh reveals lasting remorse. She accepts responsibility for Sargeras' presence within him rather than denying her failures. 205
