Background / History

The Kaldorei originated from the Zarzan tribe, a western Dark Troll branch descended in part from a Zandalari princess. After the Troll–Aqir war, the stronger Troll powers divided the desirable territories among themselves, leaving the Dark Trolls with the west. Rejected by the Zandalari, the Zarzan migrated toward the continent’s center and settled beside the Well of Eternity 1.

The Well gradually changed the tribe’s bodies and society. Their Troll traits diminished, their lives lengthened, and Arcane energy—called the Power of Order—became the foundation of a new civilization. Within roughly a century, the former Trolls had become proud, long-lived Elves with sophisticated architecture, widespread mage training, and a formidable Mage Legion 6 11 22.

Under King Jabani and later Queen Azshara, the Kaldorei expanded across Kalidom. Eldre'Thalas developed separately in Feralas under Prince Azar, emphasizing daylight life, civic planning, industry, military technology, and the Source of Order faith rather than devotion to Elune 21 32.

The empire’s prosperity produced deep divisions. Azshara and the Highborne sought to monopolize the Well of Eternity and pursue ever-greater Arcane power, while commoners increasingly departed Zin-Azshari for Eldre'Thalas 45. The resulting corruption enabled the Burning Legion’s invasion, culminating in the fall of Zin-Azshari and the destruction of the Well 48 58 74.

After the war, the Kaldorei split into three major political-cultural branches. Sophia ruled Eldre'Thalas; Malfurion and Tyrande led the northern Night Elves of Ashenvale and Darkshore; and Dath'Remar led the Highborne overseas, where they became the Sin'dorei and planned Quel'Thalas 78.

Appearance

Kaldorei appearance developed from Dark Troll physiology under the influence of the Well of Eternity. Their traits varied by region and culture.

  • Early transformed Kaldorei developed upright posture, five fingers, smaller tusks, and smoother hair 6.
  • Most Well-centered Kaldorei are described as purple-skinned and golden-eyed, retaining longer ears associated with their Troll ancestry 21.
  • Eldre'Thalas residents generally have fairer skin, sapphire-blue eyes, and only slightly pointed ears; their daylight lifestyle is presented as a factor in this difference 21 27.
  • Azar identifies the Kaldorei as a historically matriarchal civilization 160.

Society and Culture

Arcane civilization

The Arcane was central to early Kaldorei advancement. Its known schools included Evocation, Divination, and Illusion, with the latter allowing remote observation, communication, and limited visions of past or possible future events through a Scrying Pool 11.

  • Evocation — produces offensive fire and ice spells such as Fireball and Frostbolt 11.
  • Divination — permits distant observation, communication, and visions through time 11.
  • Illusion — developed under Azar’s direction as one of the civilization’s three foundational Arcane disciplines 11.
  • Mage Legion — fielded mages capable of long-range spellfire and combined spells with area-annihilation effects 22.

Eldre'Thalas scientific tradition

Eldre'Thalas treated Arcane power as a tool for industry, warfare, and daily life. Its government invested in alchemy, automated forging, alloys, Arcane energy storage, and military equipment 32.

After the War of the Ancients, it renamed the Mage Research Institute the Royal Academy of Sciences and made mathematics compulsory for young Kaldorei. Its research focused on technology, energy conservation, aerodynamics, and flight rather than personal magical cultivation 78.

Northern Night Elf society

The northern Kaldorei embraced Druidism and the Sisterhood of Elune. Malfurion formed the Cenarion Circle, whose members either entered the Emerald Dream or remained awake to protect their homeland 89.

Tyrande established an all-female Sentinel force under the Sisterhood of Elune and placed the northern territories behind a concealing veil of mist, pursuing isolation from the outside world 78 89.

Military

  • Warrior Legion — disciplined melee troops required to perceive the Power of Order to temper the effects of rage in battle 20 22.
  • Elf Hunters — long-range physical combatants with exceptional vision and Arcane Shot capability 22.
  • Mage Legion — powerful Arcane formation capable of large-scale combined spells 22.
  • Sentinels — lightly armored female warriors and assassins; Eldre'Thalas Sentinels were especially effective at raiding Portal operators 67 69.
  • Spearmen and gunners — used firearms, including armor-piercing Arcane Burst Rounds against magic-immune Doomguards 61.
  • Cavalry — a major offensive arm used in campaigns against Troll, demon, and Qiraji forces 44 61 94.
  • Air force — later fielded Su-27 fighter jets armed with missiles during the war against the Qiraji 93.
  • Great Wall Defense Line — Eldre'Thalas maintained a major fortified defense system in Silithus against the Qiraji threat 90 92.

Major Conflicts

Troll campaigns

The Kaldorei Empire fought and subjugated several Troll powers. Azshara’s forces conquered the destabilized Gurubashi, while Eldre'Thalas secured diplomatic concessions from the Zandalari before later defeating them militarily 30 44.

The empire’s victory forced the Zandalari to surrender ancient texts, disband their army, and migrate. The resulting humiliation entrenched long-term Troll hatred toward the Kaldorei 41 44.

War of the Ancients

Highborne experimentation with the Well of Eternity and Azshara’s dealings with demonic powers opened the way for the Burning Legion. Kaldorei cities, including Zin-Azshari and Suramar, faced demonic assault while rival factions struggled to coordinate resistance 48 53 58.

Kaldorei soldiers, Sentinels, Druids, Highborne, Eldre'Thalas forces, dragons, and Wild Gods ultimately fought together against the Legion. Although the invasion was repelled, the Well of Eternity exploded and permanently reshaped Kaldorei civilization 67 72 74.

Qiraji War

Eldre'Thalas maintained a long-standing defensive line against C'Thun’s Qiraji. When the Old God judged the Kaldorei unprepared, Azar led a probing assault on Ahn'Qiraj using modern Kaldorei weaponry 92.

The conflict escalated into a major campaign involving fighter aircraft, Arcane cannons, cavalry, and fortified defenses. Azar later entered C'Thun’s temple and killed the Old God, though he emerged severely weakened 93 94 132.

Relationships

  • Dark Trolls — ancestral people of the Kaldorei; the Zarzan tribe was a Dark Troll branch that settled near the Well of Eternity 1.
  • Zandalari Trolls — former kin and later rivals; diplomatic partners of Eldre'Thalas before their defeat and forced disarmament 30 44.
  • Highborne — Arcane elite whose monopoly over the Well intensified Kaldorei class conflict and contributed to the Legion’s invasion 45 48.
  • Sin'dorei — Highborne emigrants led by Dath'Remar who sailed to Lordaeron to establish Quel'Thalas 78.
  • Night Elves — northern Kaldorei led by Malfurion and Tyrande after the postwar division 78 89.
  • Druids and Cenarius — allies and a major cultural influence among northern Kaldorei, though their political demands repeatedly conflicted with Eldre'Thalas 46 75 76.
  • Dragon Aspects — wartime allies against the Burning Legion and later political rivals over Kaldorei Arcane use 72 75 77.
  • Burning Legion — the civilization’s greatest existential enemy; its invasion followed Highborne corruption and the opening of demonic Portals 48 53 58.
  • Qiraji and C'Thun — ancient insectoid enemies based in Silithus; the Kaldorei fought them repeatedly and eventually killed C'Thun 92 132.

Trivia

  • The Kaldorei name themselves “children of the stars” 138 160.
  • Kaldorei longevity is portrayed as both a strength and a political problem: it permits centuries of research but can also foster stagnation, complacency, and unchecked ambition 45 98.
  • Eldre'Thalas and the northern Night Elves each adopted long-term isolation policies, using magical barriers or veils to keep outsiders away 89 90.
