Using Character Cards

Suddenly, Ah Huang began barking frantically nearby. His whole body was tense with fury as he stared fixedly toward the dense forest.

Following Ah Huang's gaze, Lin Lei spotted a huge shape appearing and disappearing among the trees. The ground began to tremble, and even the stones on the road bounced into the air.

Aguda hurriedly called Avril and Lin Lei over to him. Although he was just an ordinary man and was frightened of this unknown beast, his instinct as a father made him step forward at a time like this.

"Lin Lei, when I hold this beast off, you two run as fast as you can."

Aguda gave his instructions anxiously. His hunched back had straightened, making him look like a wall shielding his children from the wind and rain.

Before Lin Lei could object, the figure in the forest finally emerged. It was an Earth Demon Bear, a Silver Tier One magical beast.

It stood as tall as a two-story building, its entire body covered in glossy black fur. Its four paws were as large as fans, and its purple eyes glinted with brutal fury. This was a magical beast with no reason left in it, driven only to kill.

Seeing the sudden appearance of the beast, Lin Lei didn't care about revealing his abilities in front of his family. He didn't even stop to think about how he would explain using a character card.

He simply sent a thought to the system.

"Use the Yang Jian character card."

Ding! Character card activated successfully. This card will last for two hours. Please keep track of its duration.

"Two hours. That'll be enough."

As Lin Lei transformed, he realized he now looked exactly like the classic Yang Jian from Honor of Kings. Not only was he wearing an excessively ornate suit of armor, he also held a Three-Pointed Double-Edged Glaive in his hand, and a strange third eye had appeared on his forehead.

With the Heavenly Eye, Lin Lei could clearly sense the powerful force of good and evil within it. It could easily distinguish right from wrong in a person, and it could also fire energy to kill evildoers.

After completing his dazzling transformation, Lin Lei felt strength coursing through his entire body. He was completely different from the frail boy he had been before. Lin Lei thought to himself,

I should be at Silver Tier strength now, right? After all, that was just a Bronze-tier draw.

Lin Lei understood. He was about to say something else when the Earth Demon Bear could no longer hold back and charged at them.

A gust of foul air swept over him. The beast's huge, sour-smelling mouth appeared right in front of Lin Lei. Behind him, Avril was so terrified that her face went pale, and she couldn't help screaming.

"Roar!"

The roar arrived before the beast itself. It shook the heavens and earth, sending flocks of birds and beasts fleeing and making Lin Lei's ears ache.

"What a fine beast."

Lin Lei cursed under his breath, raised his Three-Pointed Double-Edged Spear, and charged forward with Ah Huang.

Because of Lin Lei's Yang Jian transformation, Ah Huang had inherited the Howling Celestial Dog's power. The two of them were connected by their thoughts, and Ah Huang now had the strength to fight the Earth Demon Bear.

Lin Lei glanced behind him at Aguda and Avril, who were still ordinary people. Neither of them could withstand a battle between Silver-tier fighters; even the shock waves could injure them.

Lin Lei communicated with Ah Huang telepathically. They needed to move the battle elsewhere and lure the mindless beast away.

Lin Lei used Divine Sense Erosion, attacking the Earth Demon Bear's underdeveloped mind with his powerful mental force. The beast, still some distance away, flew into a rage and chased after Lin Lei even more viciously.

Seeing that he had successfully drawn the Earth Demon Bear's attention, Lin Lei didn't bother calling out to the two behind him. He sprang forward and fled into the woods.

The Earth Demon Bear barreled after him like a heavy bulldozer, smashing every obstacle in its way.

It paid no attention even when Ah Huang darted in to bite it now and then. It was focused entirely on killing the man who had just attacked it with mental force.

After running through the woods for a while, Lin Lei decided they were far enough away from his father and sister. He stopped and waited for the huge beast behind him.

Lin Lei was furious. Anyone would have been angry after being chased by a magical beast for so long, fleeing through the woods in a panic and looking like a complete wreck. That was even more true now that Yang Jian's temperament was influencing him.

As the Judicial God of Heaven, he had never been chased by a demon from the mortal world.

Watching the Earth Demon Bear approach, Lin Lei darted straight in front of it and raised his Three-Pointed Double-Edged Spear, slashing at its thick chest.

A wound the size of a bowl appeared in an instant. Bright red blood poured from it, and the white bone inside was visible, grotesque and stark.

The Earth Demon Bear roared in pain after taking Lin Lei's full-force attack. Its cry was loud and pitiful, but its powerful voice showed that the wound had only hurt it.

After being wounded, the Earth Demon Bear immediately counterattacked. Its two black paws slammed down toward Lin Lei's head, stirring up a fierce gale.

If that blow landed, even a head of bronze and arms of iron wouldn't have saved Lin Lei from a world of pain.

Fortunately, Lin Lei wasn't greedy for damage. After landing a heavy blow, he sensibly retreated five steps. The bear's charged-up attack struck empty air, and the wound that had just stopped bleeding began gushing again.

While Lin Lei attacked, Ah Huang didn't stand by and watch. After working to adjust to his new strength, he joined the fight.

With a transformation spell, Ah Huang grew until he was every bit as large as the Earth Demon Bear. And compared with the bear's fat, clumsy body, Ah Huang looked far more valiant, moving with greater speed and agility.

As the Earth Demon Bear raised a paw to strike Lin Lei, Ah Huang opened his enormous mouth, as wide as a doorway, and bit into the bear's completely unguarded back.

He tore with all his strength, ripping off a huge piece of hide along with several chunks of flesh. The Earth Demon Bear first felt a chill across its back, then a wave of agony. Ah Huang's attack, tearing the hide right off, hurt even more than Lin Lei's slash.

Under the combined assault of Lin Lei and Ah Huang, the enraged Earth Demon Bear began lashing out at everything in sight, trying to vent its pain.

But the bear's rampage didn't frighten Lin Lei in the slightest. Instead, it let him spot its weakness. With a spring forward, Lin Lei brought his Three-Pointed Double-Edged Spear right before the Earth Demon Bear's eye.

He thrust, twisted, and slashed. The purple pupil, empty of emotion, was churned to mush like tofu. Unless it encountered some great opportunity, the Earth Demon Bear would spend the rest of its life truly "blind as a bear."

Keeping the principle "Strike while your opponent is down, and finish them off," Lin Lei immediately activated his third eye and fired Good and Evil Rays at the enormous bear head again and again.

The white beams pounded the blood-streaked face like waves beating against rocks. When the final beam faded, the bear's head, which had looked undamaged from the outside, burst apart. Even its hardest bone, the skull, shattered into pieces smaller than fingernails.

"Boom!"

With a tremendous crash, the Earth Demon Bear's massive corpse slammed into the ground, raising a huge cloud of dust.

"Carry out the will of the mortal world and turn the tide."

As Yang Jian's arrogant voice rang in Lin Lei's mind, the character card expired before he realized it. He changed from a handsome golden-armored warrior into the same skinny, dark-skinned poor boy he had been before.

Ah Huang also shrank back down from his gigantic form, becoming an ordinary mongrel again.

System settlement beginning. Character card used: Yang Jian. Role-playing completion: 43%. Earth Demon Bear defeated: Silver Tier. Since this was the first kill, the bonus for defeating a stronger opponent is doubled.

As the system's mechanical voice rang out, Lin Lei's body began to grow, even though he had returned to his original skinny, poor-boy form. His loose, flabby flesh turned into firm, springy muscle, and his bony chest filled out with a clearly defined six-pack.

The weapon that had disappeared from his hand returned. Ah Huang underwent a dramatic transformation as well, becoming no weaker than an ordinary magical beast at Bronze Tier Five.

Now that he had truly felt the power of the King Card System, Lin Lei was filled with confidence as he faced the disasters and dangers of the Azeroth Continent.

After taking stock of his rewards, Lin Lei didn't rush to use his new chances to draw. He had to bathe and change before each draw—that was how to get a good result.

Lin Lei was determined to turn his luck around.

Looking at the Earth Demon Bear's corpse, he estimated it weighed at least fifteen hundred pounds. His former self would have had no way to move it, but now Lin Lei had the strength of Bronze Tier Five.

If another Earth Demon Bear appeared, Lin Lei would definitely run as far away as he could. But he could still haul away its corpse.

Only the bear's head and back had been damaged. If he dragged it to the Lord's Mansion to sell, it would fetch five or six hundred gold coins—enough to support an ordinary family for fifty or sixty years.

Lin Lei didn't bother cleaning it up. He simply dragged the Earth Demon Bear behind him and started hauling it home.

From a distance, the huge bear corpse and little Lin Lei looked like an Earth Demon Bear that was still moving.

Dragging the bear back caused panic in the village, something Lin Lei hadn't anticipated.
