Background / History
Great Jin's Garrisons station soldiers to drill and farm. Military households are tied to this system and can be compelled into service; fleeing one's registered household status risks punishment, forced conscription, and collective penalties for one's family 1.
At the beginning of the story, the Liangcheng Garrison is severely neglected. Its soldiers have gone unpaid, are weakened by hunger and disasters, and work sluggishly even while digging mass graves for refugees killed during a suppression operation 1 2.
Military Farming is a particularly exploitative duty. A military household is expected to cultivate fifty mu of Garrison public land, from which the Garrison takes most of the harvest; the household must still fund its weapons, armor, rations, service, and family livelihood from the remainder. Lin Xuan's drafting is abnormal because he is still under sixteen, the usual age at which military farmland is granted 6.
During the rebel threat to Liangcheng, the Garrison becomes a defensive stronghold. Initially, it has only around three hundred combat-ready soldiers and poorly maintained armor, forcing Flag Commanders to press-gang able-bodied military-household men into service 32. It later absorbs deserters and receives Wuqu Guard reinforcements, expanding the Liangcheng force to roughly five thousand troops for the campaign against Liu Zuolong's Righteous Army 33 36 37.
Following the campaign, the Garrison forces repair damaged walls, secure routes around Phoenix-Perch Ridge, register military merit, distribute rewards and armaments, and restore affected military households to garrison-farming registration 39.
Organization & Duties
| Position / Group | Documented Responsibilities | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Military households | Supply labor, cultivate land, drill, and provide men for military service. | Their household registration restricts their ability to leave the region 1 6. |
| Squad Leader | Commands ten men and oversees their daily drills. | Lin Xuan's grandfather and father previously held this position 25. |
| Flag Officer / Flag Commander | Commands five Squad Leaders and their men; ordinarily oversees drills and answers Garrison summonses. | A full command is described as fifty-five men; Flag Officers were selected through the Winter Hunt Martial Trial 25. |
| Thousand-Household Commander | Directs the Garrison's defense, promotions, deployments, and major orders. | Su commands Liangcheng during the rebel crisis 31 35. |
| Garrison Armory and Military Craftsman Shop | Provide bows and weapons suited to soldiers' strength. | The Garrison also controls access to martial resources such as medicinal-bath ingredients 16 24. |
Conditions and Practices
- Garrison soldiers may be ordered to suppress unrest, bury corpses, patrol settlements, repair fortifications, and pursue rebel forces 2 34 39.
- The Liangcheng Garrison's armor stores are in poor condition during the rebel emergency: much of the armor is rusted, with decayed fastening cords 32.
- Bows and arrows are recognized standard military equipment, while mechanism-based concealed weapons such as Sleeve Arrows are tightly restricted; unauthorized civilian possession is treated as a capital offense 15.
- Flag Commanders during the Liangcheng emergency must produce twenty able-bodied men each or face demotion and flogging under military law 32.
- The Garrison's relationship with local households is widely distrusted. Families fear confiscation, forced labor, conscription, and officers exploiting their authority for land or profit 6 9 32.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Early exploitation of military households
The Garrison's treatment of military households establishes the pressure on Lin Xuan's family. Its soldiers bury refugee corpses, while its officers attempt to draft Lin Xuan into Military Farming despite his age and status as his household's only son 1 2 6.
Commander Zhang cancels the order only after Lin Xuan publicly displays exceptional archery at the drill ground. The incident nevertheless fuels rumors that officers use forced Military Farming to seize the land of vulnerable households 7 9.
Lin Xuan's military advancement
Through Qin Lie, Lin Xuan learns that he can restore his combat-soldier status and inherit his family's Squad Leader position. The Garrison's Winter Hunt Martial Trial selects officers through strength, archery, and martial combat 25 27.
The trial is interrupted by the rebel advance. Lin Xuan and Zhang Quan are promoted to Flag Commanders and ordered to lead Squad Leaders in Liangcheng's defense 31.
Defense of Liangcheng and bandit suppression
The undermanned Liangcheng Garrison fortifies itself, conscripts new defenders, integrates deserters, and faces Liu Zuolong's raiding force 32 33. Lin Xuan leads a thirty-man vanguard composed of the units of Lin Jie, Qin Huai, and Liu Jiye during the counteroffensive 36.
After combining with the Wuqu Guard, the Liangcheng force joins the pursuit of Liu Zuolong's army. The campaign drives the surviving rebels into Phoenix-Perch Ridge and leads to the restoration of nearby Garrison defenses and registrations 36 37 39.
