Background / History
Admission to Class A
Arisu has been exceptionally brilliant since childhood, but was born with a physical defect. Under the school’s sorting criteria, she would ordinarily have been assigned to Class D. Her father persuaded the other senior officials to admit her to Class A, arguing that her congenital limitation could not be overcome through effort and that her other abilities more than compensated for it 18.
Meeting Makoto Nishikado
Arisu first encounters Makoto while secretly filming Kamuro Masumi stealing beer from a convenience store. She has already noticed his attention to free necessities, another student’s spending, and Masumi’s theft. His ability to locate her hiding place further interests her 7.
Makoto deliberately treats her as a lost child, nearly breaking her composure. Rather than retaliate, Arisu recognizes the encounter as a lesson in emotional control and identifies him as another genius worth defeating. When he leaves without giving his real name, she interprets finding him as a test of her abilities and correctly reasons that he likely belongs to Class B and leads it 7 8.
Investigating Her Opponents
After Makoto falsely introduces himself as Ayanokoji Kiyotaka and references their supposed childhood connection, Arisu obtains the real Kiyotaka’s file from her father. She confirms that she had met Kiyotaka only once and that he would not know her. Makoto’s knowledge of that meeting makes his background particularly intriguing 8 18.
Arisu declines her father’s offer to provide Makoto’s file, preferring to uncover his secrets herself. Learning that Makoto is the school’s best-performing student and already plays Go at a professional level, she decides to create a Go account, improve rapidly, and challenge him in his specialty 18.
Go and Chess Duels
Through Masumi, Arisu invites Makoto to the Go club room for a weekend match. She says she likes him because he understands her unusually well and promises to go on a date with him if he wins 32.
During their Go match, Arisu refuses concessions and welcomes Makoto’s serious play. His unfamiliar, AI-inspired strategy overturns her early advantage; she resigns after 47 moves. Unwilling to leave her talent unproven, she immediately challenges him at chess, her stronger game 39 40.
Makoto wins the chess match as well, despite a much narrower difference in ability. Arisu initially questions whether she is truly a genius, then unexpectedly finds herself delighted by meeting someone stronger. She asks him to face her at full strength in future class competitions, accepts keeping their contests one-on-one, and begins planning to honor the promised date 41 42.
By the following month, Arisu is asking around about Makoto and has sent a subordinate to deliver bento boxes to him. Their connection prompts rumors in Class B that they are already a couple, though the passage does not establish those rumors as true 45.
Appearance
Arisu is a petite girl with long silver-white hair, described as resembling an exquisite doll. Despite her frail health and reliance on a cane, she carries herself with a queenlike presence 7 8 39.
- Stature: At 150 cm, the top of her head reaches approximately Makoto’s armpit 7.
- Clothing: Wears the school uniform with white thigh-highs and suspenders 7.
- Mannerisms: Frequently smiles elegantly and uses graceful bows, including when acknowledging an opponent 7 8 42.
- Physical condition: Her complexion becomes pale during the demanding Go match, prompting Makoto to ask whether she can continue 40.
Personality
Arisu considers herself a genius and seeks opponents capable of challenging that belief. Her initial interest in Makoto is openly predatory: she regards him as worthy “prey” and wants to defeat him in his own specialty. She dislikes handicaps because a victory obtained through concessions would feel equivalent to losing 8 18 40.
She treats emotional restraint as an essential quality of leadership. Although Makoto’s teasing nearly drives her into a rage, she stops herself, examines her reaction, and thanks him for exposing a weakness in her self-control. She subsequently enjoys his “Little Princess” nickname and heart-shaped gesture, while disliking his readiness to leave their encounter unfinished 7 8.
Her response to defeat changes during their board-game duels. Losing at chess briefly damages her confidence, but frustration gives way to admiration and joy. She realizes that seeing the limits of talent matters more to her than preserving an undefeated image—even wishing that Makoto might continue defeating her 42.
Arisu’s gentleness can also carry an intimidating edge. Masumi is wary of interrupting her, while Kanzaki describes her as cold toward anything outside her genuine interests. His concern that her ego could eventually harm Class A is his assessment, rather than an established outcome 42 45.
Abilities & Skills
Observation and Deduction
Arisu draws useful conclusions from behavior and limited information without initially relying on advance briefings from her father 7 8.
- Tracks several people’s actions simultaneously in the convenience store 7.
- Recognizes that Makoto’s apparent mistake about her age is deliberate provocation 7.
- Rejects his false Ayanokoji identity and correctly infers his likely class and leadership position 8.
Go
Arisu is a talented Go player, though she has spent relatively little time studying it compared with Makoto 39 40.
- Makoto’s system evaluates her Go skill at 920,000 before their match 39.
- Uses conventional positional reasoning to assess his opening 39.
- Cannot effectively answer his unfamiliar 3-3 invasion and subsequent “crawl”; she resigns after 47 moves 40.
- Acknowledges that she cannot beat him in the short term without a two-stone handicap, which she would not regard as a meaningful victory 40.
Chess
Chess is Arisu’s strongest board game and provides a substantially closer contest against Makoto 40 41 42.
- Recognizes his formidable preparation within the opening ten moves 41.
- Pushes him hard enough that he believes a single mistake could cost him the match 41.
- Estimates that ten games between them would likely produce four wins for her and six for him; this is her assessment, not a recorded match series 42.
Leadership and Emotional Control
Arisu commands Masumi and considers composure fundamental to standing above others 8 39.
- Plans to recruit Masumi as a subordinate and use her to investigate Makoto 8.
- Uses Masumi as an intermediary when arranging the weekend duel 32.
- Recovers her outward calm after deliberate provocation and later after painful defeat 7 8 42.
- Her physical limitation remains incurable according to her own account; sustained mental effort can still visibly tax her 40.

- Sakayanagi Narimori — Father and school chairman. He is proud of her intelligence, advocates for her Class A placement, and supplies Kiyotaka’s file. Arisu nevertheless objects to the possibility that he might be monitoring her movements 18.
- Ayanokoji Kiyotaka — A boy she met once before enrollment and another genius she wants to defeat. Makoto’s knowledge of their earlier encounter renews her interest in him 18.
- Ryuji Kanzaki — Childhood acquaintance. He respects her talent but warns Makoto about her coldness and troublesome personality 45.
- Yuki Himeno — Makoto’s follower. Arisu briefly directs an intimidating gaze toward her while questioning Makoto’s wish to exclude others from their rivalry; Makoto steps between them 42.

Trivia
- In the author’s publication note, Tachibana Kanade is suggested as a possible design prototype for Arisu because of their similar appearance and symptoms. This is presented as the author’s speculation, not a confirmed origin 55.
