Yuki begins her first year seated beside Makoto Nishikado in Class 1-B. Already exhausted by Honami Ichinose's bright, highly social personality, she admits through her reactions that she dislikes extroverts and fears being swept into a class culture of constant gatherings. Makoto exploits this anxiety by describing a future in which she has no time alone, leaving her seriously considering a class transfer. 3

During the club orientation, Yuki complains that she belongs to the “Go-Home Club” and resents being pressured to attend activities merely because the rest of Class B wants to follow Makoto. He proposes that she become his sidekick, arguing that running errands for the class leader would give her a legitimate excuse to decline unwanted invitations. 14
