Much like how the Great Crusade was secretly gathering materials for Emperor to construct the Webway, everything gained from the Second Great Crusade was collected by Blackwatch from the war zones and secretly transported to holy Terra.

Or, more accurately, to that damaged section of the Webway located right beneath Emperor's backside.

There was no other reason: the Webway, as a form of hyperspace travel capable of rapid transit across the galaxy, was simply too powerful—an order of magnitude faster than the Star Gate system built by Blackwatch.

If the Star Gate was a reasonably stable green-skinned train—safe, but barely faster than Warp travel—then the Webway was a surface-to-air strategic missile flying through the heavens, and one that, goddammit, allowed you to get off whenever you pleased.

Anyone who has been blasted by a DF-31A Mod knows that when speed reaches a certain limit, any means of interception becomes meaningless, and the Webway was exactly that kind of ultimate weapon.

Watching Hogg busy himself back and forth alongside the Dark Tide squad, Emperor couldn't help but feel that history was a cycle; he, too, had once placed his hopes in the Webway, thinking he could soar to the heavens using that high-speed highway.
