Background and History

Tang San grows up believing his father, Tang Hao, is an ordinary blacksmith. The Sky Screen exposes Tang Hao as the Clear Sky Douluo and reveals Tang San’s twin martial souls and knowledge of Tang Sect techniques, hidden weapons, and poison. Tang Hao subsequently reunites with him at Shrek Academy 9 10.

When Tang San learns that his mother, Ah Yin, was a Hundred-Thousand-Year Soul Beast hunted by Martial Soul Hall, he vows to grow strong enough to avenge his parents. Some Shrek companions remain outwardly friendly but become uneasy about his parentage 48.

The Sky Screen later identifies him as the Son of the Underworld King, prompting pursuit by the Envoys of Reward Good and Punish Evil. Tang San denies that he is destined to harm the common people. Dai Mubai, Ning Rongrong, and Zhu Zhuqing leave Shrek as the group prepares to flee Suotuo City 77 78.

To enter the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament without being recognized, Tang San follows Tang Hao’s plan to strengthen his Clear Sky Hammer and awaken his Blue Silver Emperor martial soul. Tang Hao gives him the alias Tang Yin 151 157. After the Envoys kill Tang Hao and Tang Xiao, Tang San swears revenge on them, Spirit Hall, and the Peak of Cloud and Sky. He then uses the Eight Spider Lances to devour victims’ blood essence and souls, acknowledging to Xue Beng that he has become an evil soul master 178 179 180.

Xue Hen tracks Tang San to Blue Tyrant Academy. Tang San’s attempt to strike first with Yama’s Invitation fails, as does his attempt to identify himself as Tang Yin. Xue Hen captures and kills him 183 184.

Appearance

Tang San’s second martial soul awakening drastically changes his appearance 157.

  • Before the awakening: Dark-skinned, with ordinary or unattractive features 156 157.
  • After the awakening: Fair-skinned, refined, and noticeably handsome; his altered face supports his use of the Tang Yin alias 157.
  • In the Sky Screen’s future depiction: Wears black demonic armor, eight wings, and a mask, and carries a pitch-black trident 158.

Personality

Tang San is protective of his father and teacher, but his vows of revenge become increasingly severe. He promises to kill those responsible for persecuting his parents and later rejects former friends who leave Shrek after the Sky Screen’s accusations 48 77 78. He initially tells Tang Hao that he will not harm innocent people; after his father and uncle die, he justifies devouring others as necessary to gain strength and avenge them 106 178 180.

He is also conscious of Xue Hen as a rival. Xue Hen’s matching twin martial souls and Innate Full Soul Power catch his attention early, and Tang San later hopes the Heaven-Grasping Gourd could help him surpass Xue Hen 2 129.

Abilities and Skills

Twin Martial Souls

  • Blue Silver Grass / Blue Silver Emperor: Inherited from Ah Yin. After Tang San reaches Soul King, the Blue Silver King facilitates its second awakening as the Blue Silver Emperor 48 157.
  • Clear Sky Hammer: Inherited from Tang Hao. Tang San adds rings to it earlier than planned to raise his soul power for the second awakening 151 157.

Tang Sect Techniques and Hidden Weapons

  • Knows Tang Sect techniques, can craft hidden weapons, and is skilled with poison 9.
  • Uses the poisoned hidden weapon Yama’s Invitation against Xue Hen, but fails to stop him 183.

Eight Spider Lances

  • An External Soul Bone obtained in a fortuitous encounter 179.
  • Can devour an enemy’s blood essence and souls to increase Tang San’s strength. After he uses this power, the lances turn vivid red and his Blue Silver Emperor takes on a reddish hue 180.
  • Cannot penetrate Xue Hen’s protective aura during their confrontation 183.

Equipment and Items

  • Two soul bones obtained by Tang Hao — help Tang San reach Soul King; one came from Shi Nian and the other was stolen from the Heaven Dou City Auction House 157.
  • Yama’s Invitation — poisoned hidden weapon used in his failed attack on Xue Hen 183.
  • Pitch-black trident — carried by the future version shown on the Sky Screen 158.

Relationships

  • Tang Hao — father; reveals Tang San’s lineage, arranges his second awakening, and dies protecting his whereabouts 10 151 157 174 178.
  • Ah Yin — mother and source of his Blue Silver Emperor bloodline; her persecution drives his feud with Martial Soul Hall 48 151.
  • Tang Xiao — uncle; refuses to reveal Tang San’s location to the Envoys and dies in the ensuing conflict 174 175 178.
  • Yu Xiaogang — teacher; continues to train Tang San and consoles him after Tang Hao and Tang Xiao die 48 116 178.
  • Xiao Wu — close companion who warns him about the Envoys and supports him after his family’s deaths 77 178.
  • Xue Hen — rival in Tang San’s eyes and, ultimately, the person who kills him 2 129 183 184.
  • Dai Mubai and Ning Rongrong — Shrek companions who distance themselves from him after the Son of the Underworld King revelation 77 78.
  • Xue Beng — prospective future disciple shown by the Sky Screen; in the present, Tang San asks him not to investigate the blood-essence attacks 178 179 180.

Sky Screen Depiction

The Sky Screen shows a future in which Tang San, bearing the Son of the Underworld King designation, defeats the deified Bibi Dong and kills Qian Renxue. Yuan Qi then intervenes and kills him 158 160 162 164. Tang San watches this depiction while still alive at Blue Tyrant Academy. His later death at Xue Hen’s hands is a separate event 165 184.
