Background / History

Li Yuechan is Emperor Li De’s youngest daughter. Her mother died when she was young, and Li De largely neglected her while pursuing immortality 34. At about sixteen, she travels toward the capital in a disguised merchant caravan. At Black Wind Gorge, an assassin sent by the First Prince intercepts her; she offers to surrender if he spares her attendants. Lin Hanzhou kills the assassin and saves the caravan. Yuechan thanks him and later gives him the grandmaster-level movement manual Floating Light Glancing Shadow 32 33.

On his deathbed, Li De decides that his sons are unfit to rule. He gives Yuechan the Imperial Seal of State and names her his successor, promising her the support of Wang Jian and the Imperial Guard 34. Her brothers contest the decree and attempt to seize the throne. Yuechan takes her place on the dragon throne despite their threats; Lin Hanzhou’s intervention forces the opposing princes and officials to submit 35 36.

Yuechan orders the execution of the coup’s leaders, appoints Lin Hanzhou Grand Protector State Preceptor, and grants him access to the imperial treasury 37. When Qing cavalry besiege the capital, she rejects proposals to flee or surrender, executes the prime minister who argues for surrender, and pledges to defend the city alongside its soldiers. Lin Hanzhou defeats the attacking Grandmasters 38 39. She later works with him to strip the Three Feudal Lords of their private armies and centralize Great Gan’s power 42.

After fifty years, Yuechan is an experienced empress and veteran Grandmaster. She still seeks Lin Hanzhou’s counsel when Great Qing invades again with a reported ten Grandmasters 45 46 47.

Appearance

Yuechan is introduced as a girl of about sixteen or seventeen in a plain long dress. Fifty years later, she wears an imperial crown and a golden phoenix robe; fine lines have appeared at the corners of her eyes 32 45.

Personality

Yuechan remains composed when confronted by the assassin at Black Wind Gorge and tries to protect her attendants, though inheriting the throne initially leaves her frightened and uncertain 32 34. Once crowned, she becomes increasingly decisive: she punishes the coup’s leaders, refuses to abandon the besieged capital, and takes an active role in consolidating imperial authority 37 38 42.

She retains deep gratitude toward Lin Hanzhou. Even after decades as empress, she bows to him and credits him with both her survival and Great Gan’s stability 45.
