Background
In his youth, Adam was an ordinary, frustrated man who repeatedly failed in study, work, and love. His life changed after he acquired one half of the Abyss-Sealing Martial Bone, which transformed his body through marrow cleansing and bone replacement and allowed him to absorb and convert Abyssal power. He used this power to rise to the pinnacle of the Human World 364.
Adam eventually became one of the three founders of the Human Alliance and its leader. Over centuries, he pursued control and longevity through increasingly ruthless means, including research into converting demonic energy into spiritual energy as a method of controlling humanity 333 361.
He ordered the silencing of Ye Zhenghe after Ye Zhenghe uncovered this scheme. Adam also admitted that he colluded with Demonic Beasts to create chaos and eliminate gifted young cultivators whom he considered future threats 361. Ye Zhenghe’s death made Adam an enemy of Wu Canglan, Ye Zhenghe’s master, and later of Ye Zhenghe’s son, Ye Xiao 363.
Appearance
Adam is a gaunt, elderly-looking man whose body reflects the cost of centuries of life extension and Abyssal power.
- Wears a faded white robe with a dust-covered trailing hem 336 361.
- Has golden hair, golden eyes, and nearly translucent skin marked by blue-black veins beneath his cheekbones 336 361.
- His dark-gold eyes are described as weathered and reflective, while his voice is hoarse and slow, like dry leaves rubbing together 336.
- When wounded, his body releases gray mist rather than blood; his flesh is grayish-white and visibly cracked as his condition worsens 337 461.
- Speaks fluent Dragon Kingdom language and has mastered dozens of languages over his long life 336.
Personality
Adam is arrogant, calculating, and obsessed with surviving beyond his natural lifespan. He views most people—including those he has killed—as insignificant “insects,” showing no remorse for suppressing dissenters or sacrificing potential geniuses to preserve his own dominance 361 363.
His confidence stems from centuries as the world’s foremost cultivator, but his fear of death becomes increasingly apparent as his body deteriorates. When his lifespan nears its end, he attempts to bargain with, manipulate, and threaten Wu Canglan and Ye Xiao rather than face death 340 362 364.
Adam is also intensely envious of Ye Xiao’s Extreme Martial Body and later evolution. He sees Ye Xiao not as a person, but as a perfect vessel and a means to prolong his own life 336 365 466.
Abilities & Skills
Fourteenth-Realm Transcendentalist
Adam is a Fourteenth-Realm expert once regarded as the strongest person in the Human World. Even in decline, he retains enough power to crush Twelfth- and Thirteenth-Realm opponents under ordinary circumstances 337 361.
- His realm exerts an innate oppressive pressure on others 336.
- At his peak, he stood above the world’s other Transcendentalists 361.
- His aging body and accumulated injuries severely reduce his combat power, allowing Black Ox and later Ye Xiao to contend with him 337 340 461.
- His movements remain exceptionally precise; he can evade and deflect attacks comparable to a Twelfth-Realm full-force strike 460 461.
Abyss-Sealing Martial Bone
Adam possesses one half of the Abyss-Sealing Martial Bone, the source of his rise from obscurity.
- Converts otherwise dangerous Abyssal power into usable strength 364.
- Triggered his physical transformation through marrow cleansing and bone replacement 364.
- Resonates with Ye Xiao’s matching half when the two are near one another 459.
- Adam seeks the missing half for the possibility of extending his lifespan 365.
- Ye Xiao forcibly removes Adam’s half during their final battle, completing the bone in Ye Xiao’s body 464.
Eerie Mist
Adam can flood an area with gray-black Eerie Mist, weakening all enemies caught within it.
- Drains health by 3% per second 337.
- Reduces movement speed and spiritual-energy circulation speed by 60% 337.
- Suppresses true combat strength by 50% 337.
- Its spread makes Adam the dominant force within his domain-like battlefield, though it cannot overcome Ye Xiao’s later strength and defenses 460.
Gray Matter Techniques
Adam manipulates grayish-white matter and light into attacks, restraints, and battlefield hazards.
- Gray Matter Line — a fast, precise ray that can alter its trajectory once to pursue a target 461.
- Trace of Extension — spreads gray matter across the ground; its Sedimentation effect reduces movement speed by 50% and healing by 30% 462.
- Gray-Matter Thorn — forms and launches numerous piercing thorns from accumulated gray matter 462.
- Imprint — gray beams that bypass Ye Xiao’s external shield and directly damage his body 463.
- Gray Coffin of Ages — traps Ye Xiao inside a gray cocoon, allowing Adam to approach and attempt to seize his heart before Frost Cold intervenes 463.
Possession and Longevity Research
Adam seeks external methods to escape death rather than accepting the limits of his deteriorating body.
- Led an overseas organization researching black magic for immortality 335.
- Experimented with methods such as blood transfusions, heart transplants, and organ replacement before targeting Ye Xiao’s physique 335.
- Intended to possess Ye Xiao’s Extreme Martial Body as a replacement vessel 336.
- Later shifts his focus to obtaining Ye Xiao’s Longevity Seed and the other half of the Abyss-Sealing Martial Bone 460.
Relationships
- Wu Canglan — longtime enemy. Adam killed Wu Canglan’s disciple Ye Zhenghe and junior brother Black Ox; Wu Canglan later imprisons him in a domain world, surpasses him, and ultimately executes him 363 365 396 471.
- Ye Xiao — target of Adam’s possession attempt and later his final opponent. Adam seeks Ye Xiao’s Extreme Martial Body, Longevity Seed, and Abyss-Sealing Martial Bone; Ye Xiao defeats him and removes his half of the Martial Bone 336 460 464.
- Ye Zhenghe — Wu Canglan’s disciple and Ye Xiao’s father. Adam had him silenced after he discovered Adam’s spiritual-energy control scheme 361 363.
- Black Ox / Old Man Black — adversary who sacrifices his life and future potential to prevent Adam from capturing Ye Xiao. Adam later admits that he killed him 339 468.
- Jiang Henian — associate who reports Ye Xiao’s whereabouts to Adam but remains wary of provoking Wu Canglan 359.
- Sun Changfeng — subordinate who initially addresses Adam as Alliance Leader; later witnesses Adam’s loss of authority under Wu Canglan 396.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Ninefold Palace Pursuit
Adam arrives at the Ninefold Palace and identifies Ye Xiao’s Extreme Martial Body as the finest vessel he has ever seen. He activates pressure against Ye Xiao and confronts Black Ox, intending to take Ye Xiao’s body to extend his own life 336.
Black Ox holds Adam back long enough for Ye Xiao to escape, using the forbidden Dao-Burning Soul-Ash Art to force a temporary breakthrough. The battle devastates the Sixth and Seventh Palaces and leaves Adam severely injured, accelerating his physical decline 337 339 341.
Conflict with Wu Canglan
With less than half a month to live after further injury, Adam searches desperately for Ye Xiao and attempts to persuade Wu Canglan to reveal Ye Xiao’s location. Wu Canglan instead exposes Adam’s crimes, including Ye Zhenghe’s murder and the extermination of promising geniuses 359 361 362.
Wu Canglan traps Adam within a prepared domain world and reveals that Adam’s own half of the Abyss-Sealing Martial Bone will eventually be taken for Ye Xiao 363 365.
Final Battle with Ye Xiao
At Yellow Springs Nine Netherworld, Adam demands Ye Xiao surrender the Longevity Seed and Abyss-Sealing Martial Bone. Ye Xiao recognizes Adam as the final trial Wu Canglan has arranged for him and challenges the weakened Fourteenth-Realm cultivator directly 459 460.
Adam initially counters Ye Xiao with Eerie Mist, Gray Matter techniques, Imprint, and the Gray Coffin of Ages, but Frost Cold rescues Ye Xiao from the coffin. Ye Xiao then deploys the Guardian Seal Barrier, binds Adam with Seal Punch, and tears the remaining half of the Abyss-Sealing Martial Bone from Adam’s body 463 464.
Adam survives long enough to witness Ye Xiao’s Extreme Martial Body evolve into the Extreme Martial Saint Body. After taunting Ye Xiao with knowledge of Xuanyuan Cang’s plan, Adam is abruptly killed by Wu Canglan’s sword, Tinglan 466 471.
