Background / History
Goku arrived on Earth as an infant Saiyan. Karochi warned Kami and Korin that Goku could become Earth’s future protector if his development was not disrupted, while also cautioning that his full-moon Great Ape transformation could endanger Son Gohan. Karochi asked Kami to remove Goku’s tail, but this did not occur before Goku transformed years later. 10
Raised by Son Gohan on Mount Paozu, Goku learned martial arts, the Kamehameha, and the Afterimage Technique. He later met Bulma while seeking Master Roshi, accepted Roshi as his teacher, and joined Bulma’s Dragon Ball journey. 129 131 133
Karochi’s earlier intervention allowed Son Gohan to survive Goku’s first Great Ape rampage. Karochi subdued Goku without killing him, left behind a healing machine, and chose not to remove his tail because it would grow back. 33 34
Appearance
Goku is a tailed Saiyan whose appearance changes substantially when he transforms.
- Has a Saiyan tail, which leads Bulma and later Goku himself to question his alien origin. 129 162
- Becomes a massive brown-furred Great Ape with red eyes when overwhelmed by the effects of a full or artificial moon. 33 196
- His Super Saiyan form has upright golden hair, golden brows, green pupils, and a condensed golden aura. 280
- By the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, he has grown into a tall, handsome young man. 148
Personality
Goku is driven by training, combat, and the pursuit of stronger opponents. Even after sensing Karochi’s overwhelming power, his response is to ask for a spar and set a new goal for himself. 169 He treats serious matches as chances to learn, respects capable opponents such as Cabba and Renso, and shows sportsmanship even while vastly stronger than them. 278 279
Despite his Saiyan love of battle, Goku is protective of his friends and family. He shields his companions from King Piccolo’s forces, sends Bulma away when danger approaches, and acts quickly to save allies from Raditz and Namek’s collapsing space. 148 150 186 208 He is also initially naïve about romance, though he becomes flustered by Bulma’s affection and grows into a devoted father to Son Gohan. 152 188
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Physiology
Goku possesses the Saiyan capacity for rapid growth, powerful transformations, and combat-driven improvement.
- His body is described as tougher than steel due to his upbringing and training under Son Gohan. 131
- He can sense ki, including hostile or unusually powerful presences over great distances. 150 184
- His potential is considered extraordinarily high by the Grand Elder of Namek. 202
- He retains a strong desire to fight despite losing the cruel nature he possessed before his childhood head injury. 160
Great Ape
Exposure to moonlight triggers Goku’s Oozaru transformation.
- Multiplies his combat power tenfold; at one documented transformation, his power reaches 90. 33
- Initially causes complete loss of reason and indiscriminate destruction. 33 34
- An artificial moon can also trigger the form. 196
- Unlike Vegeta, Goku cannot initially maintain his sanity in the transformation. 196
Kamehameha
A ki wave taught to Goku by Son Gohan.
- Goku learned the technique before meeting Master Roshi. 132
- Master Roshi recognizes his execution as highly proficient and close to his own skill. 133
- Uses it to defeat King Piccolo and Abo Cado. 151 208
- Can carefully regulate its output during training clashes. 203
Afterimage Technique
A movement technique inherited from Son Gohan’s teachings.
Flight
Goku learns to fly during his growth as a martial artist.
- Uses Flight alongside High-Speed Movement to defeat Tambourine. 149
- Regularly travels through the air with the other Z Fighters by the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. 156
High-Speed Movement
Goku uses rapid movement in both combat and rescue situations.
- Defeats Tambourine with High-Speed Movement and Flight. 149
- Reaches Tien Shinhan and Yamcha in time to deflect Raditz’s attacks. 186
Instant Transmission
A Yardrat secret technique.
- Learns Instant Transmission during a year of training on Yardrat. 203
- Uses it strategically against Renso’s ki blast during their sparring match. 279
Super Saiyan Transformations
Goku develops increasingly advanced Super Saiyan forms through training.
- False Super Saiyan — Can access the form, but considers it too dangerous because it makes him violent and difficult to control. 203
- Super Saiyan — A fiftyfold increase over his normal state; Goku achieves perfect mastery and can transform with minimal environmental disturbance. 280
- Super Saiyan Full Power — Maintains the Super Saiyan state effortlessly after Hyperbolic Time Chamber training with Gohan. 258
- Super Saiyan 3 — Reached through fusion with Gohan; offers immense power but rapidly drains ki and stamina. 208 358
Kaio-ken and Spirit Bomb
Goku studies techniques associated with King Kai.
- Learns Kaio-ken but stops at a tenfold multiplier, considering Super Saiyan more effective for himself. 225
- Continues studying the Spirit Bomb with his son Gohan. 225
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Power Pole — Carries it during his early journey with Bulma. 129
- Flying Nimbus — Given to him by Master Roshi after Goku demonstrates the Kamehameha. 133
- Gravity training machine — Uses Karochi’s machine and later trains with more advanced gravity facilities at Mount Paozu. 153 156 188
Relationships
- Son Gohan — Adoptive grandfather and first martial-arts teacher; Goku’s early training, Kamehameha, and Afterimage Technique originate from him. 131 132
- Bulma — Traveling companion, close confidante, and later partner; they live together on Mount Paozu and have a son, Son Gohan. 127 148 184
- Son Gohan (son) — Goku’s purple-haired son with Bulma; Goku is a devoted father and later trains alongside him in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. 184 188 251 258
- Karochi — Fellow Saiyan, early protector, mentor, and training guide; Karochi saves Son Gohan from Goku’s Great Ape form and later teaches Goku advanced training concepts and Yardrat techniques. 34 189 203
- Master Roshi — Recognizes Goku’s talent, accepts him as a disciple, and gives him the Flying Nimbus. 133
- Piccolo — Rival and frequent training partner; they fight at the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament and later train together on Yardrat. 162 188 203
- Krillin — Fellow martial artist and friend; his absence from a sacrificial death is one reason Goku cannot naturally awaken Super Saiyan despite reaching sufficient power. 148 203
- Vegeta — Saiyan rival; Vegeta is repeatedly unsettled by Goku surpassing him, while Goku remains interested in fighting him. 238 246 349
- Cabba and Renso — Universe 6 Saiyans whom Goku respectfully spars with while searching for the Super Dragon Balls. 278 279
- Caulifla — A Universe 6 Saiyan who becomes determined to learn Goku’s Super Saiyan transformation after seeing it. 280
