Background / History

Poison Backlash and Recruitment

Despite his reputation as a poison expert, Dugu Bo spent years suffering from toxins produced by his own martial soul. The poison had penetrated his bone marrow, and his research had only enabled him to suppress it with soul power. He kept both his condition and Dugu Yan’s poisoning secret, partly to protect their reputation 33 34 36.

Li Fei deliberately placed a Universal Antidote Pill at auction to draw him out. Dugu Bo purchased it for one million Gold Soul Coins, took it, and immediately sought its creator after discovering that it both cured him and improved his martial soul 29 33.

Their first private meeting began with suspicion and a threat against Li Fei’s life. Dugu Bo recognized holes in Li Fei’s explanation about an ancient book, but accepted his friendship because the cure was genuine. A second pill for Dugu Yan, followed by proof of Li Fei’s extraordinary age and cultivation, persuaded him to become Li Fei’s protector and a Li Family offering elder 34 35.

Dugu Yan’s Recovery and Matchmaking

Dugu Bo revealed Dugu Yan’s poisoning only after obtaining a reliable cure. He administered the second antidote, verified that her toxins had disappeared, and witnessed her Jade Scale Snake evolve into a Jade Scale Flood Dragon 36.

He also warned her that Yu Tianheng’s affection served the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s interests. When she subsequently broke up with Yu Tianheng, Dugu Bo supported her decision, confronted him, and withdrew her from the Heaven Dou Royal Academy 36 46 47.

Although Li Fei initially declined a proposed engagement, Dugu Bo later arranged a meeting between him and Dugu Yan. His hope was that Li Fei would eventually become a Title Douluo capable of protecting her after his death. He was delighted when the two emerged from their conversation holding hands 35 48.

Becoming the Li Family’s Principal Protector

Dugu Bo accompanied Li Fei on soul-ring hunts and opened his secluded garden to him. He allowed Li Fei to harvest its Immortal Herbs and agreed to make the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well a headquarters for the Li Family 40 43 45 53.

His role extended beyond guarding Li Fei. He helped Flender hunt his eighth soul ring, subdued the Dragon Swamp Behemoth for Li Yusong, and assisted six Breaking Clan members in obtaining their eighth rings. He also declined valuable soul bones so that Li Yusong could advance more quickly and share the family’s defensive burden 57 66 72 81.

At the Pill Pavilion, Dugu Bo’s presence supplied the military backing for Li Fei’s negotiations with Yang Wudi. He threatened retaliation when Yang Wudi pressured Li Fei, then supported the Breaking Clan’s recruitment 79 80.

Later Cultivation and Imperial Cover

After receiving the Soul Ascension Art, Dugu Bo spent nearly a year upgrading his rings. Once he met the basic requirements for Level 98, he decided to travel through the secular world in search of insight. Before leaving, he exchanged emergency contact tools and cultivation knowledge with Li Fei 83 95 96.

He later returned to the Heaven Dou court under the cover of his travels, acting on Li Fei’s plan. He agreed to help the Grand General secretly obtain a ninth soul ring and discouraged Emperor Xue Ye from pursuing the mysterious Title Douluo connected to the Skywater City incident 116.

Appearance

  • Before rejuvenation: Presented as an elderly man, including an aged voice during the auction 33.
  • After the Dragon Transformation Pill: Appears to be in his twenties or thirties, with vitality and physique exceeding those of his younger self 61.
  • Distinguishing presence: Described as handsome and high-spirited after transformation, radiating powerful dragon might 61.
  • Martial soul manifestation: A massive Blood-Red Seven-Colored Jade Scale Dragon Emperor 61.

Personality

Dugu Bo is suspicious and intimidating with strangers, but values loyalty and personal favors. He does not blindly accept Li Fei’s fabricated explanation; instead, he knowingly overlooks its inconsistencies because Li Fei has genuinely helped him and his granddaughter. Their friendship develops into enough trust for him to share his cultivation insights and support the Li Family’s long-term plans 24 34 35 96.

His affection for Dugu Yan drives many of his decisions. He originally hid her poisoning to let her live without worry, comforts her after her breakup, and seeks a partner who can secure her future. This protectiveness can become overbearing: he promotes Li Fei as a match and later urges him to have children 36 48 53.

He readily considers lethal solutions, including preemptively destroying the Breaking Clan, but can accept restraint. Li Fei persuades him to explore cooperation instead, and Dugu Bo avoids directly attacking Yu Tianheng because doing so would invite conflict with the boy’s powerful elder 48 49.

Abilities & Skills

Poison Arts

His principal specialty combines lethal toxins, poison formations, and control over poisonous mist. The Blood Seven-Absolute Pill greatly strengthens these techniques and permanently resolves his vulnerability to his own poison 42 49 50.

  • Area denial: Establishes a formation around Li Fei during soul-ring absorption, stating that intruders below Title Douluo would dissolve into blood 42.
  • Mist manipulation: Opens safe paths through his garden’s poison mist and replenishes its toxicity after the Jade Scale Seven-Absolute Flower is removed 44 45.
  • Penetrating damage: His evolved poison invades and erodes the Titan Giant Ape’s body despite its physical toughness 73.
  • Mass-combat potential: At peak Level 97, his poison is described as lethal below Super Douluo and capable of severely injuring or killing Super Douluo, giving him extraordinary power against armies 80.
  • Documented limitation: The Heaven-Swallowing Black Emperor swallows his poison attack with black energy and remains unharmed 51.

Martial Soul Avatar

His evolved martial soul allows him to fight in the form of the Blood-Red Seven-Colored Jade Scale Dragon Emperor 61 65.

  • Venomous Array: Neutralizes the Dragon Swamp Behemoth’s swamp tornadoes 65.
  • Petrifying beam: Petrifies and shatters the behemoth’s incoming beam 65.
  • Physical assault: Uses his Avatar form to batter the immobilized behemoth, leaving Li Yusong to deliver the finishing blow 66.
  • Major combat feat: Defeats and severely injures the hundred-thousand-year Titan Giant Ape. He spares it because Li Fei has reserved it as a future soul-ring target, not because he lacks the power to kill it 72 73.

Eighth Soul Skill: Time Solidification

Places the surrounding area into stasis, freezing the Dragon Swamp Behemoth in mid-air before it can retreat into the swamp 66.

  • Creates an opening for close-range attacks while the target is immobilized 66.

Soul-Power Barriers

Uses soul power to isolate private conversations 34 36.

  • Encloses the auction room during his meeting with Li Fei 34.
  • Establishes a sound-isolating barrier before revealing Dugu Yan’s poisoning 36.

Soul-Ring Techniques

Learns techniques developed by Li Fei rather than relying solely on newly hunted rings 67 83.

  • Ring concealment: Receives a secret technique for hiding his soul rings 67.
  • Soul Ascension Art: Converts accumulated energy into gradual increases in ring age; he prioritizes his ninth ring and eventually obtains a seven-black, two-red configuration 83 95.

Environmental Limitations

  • Poor underwater performance: As a land-based soul master with weak swimming skills, he would suffer a substantial loss of strength underwater 42.
  • Dangerous spring: Before Li Fei explains the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Dugu Bo avoids touching it because his instincts warn that it could kill him 45.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • 50,000-year arm soul bone — Obtained from the Nine-Colored Centipede Dragon and gifted by Li Fei; its absorption raises him from Level 93 to Level 94 43.
  • Wish-Fulfilling Treasure Pouch — Acquired during his youthful travels; can contain living creatures. He hands it to Li Fei for preserving harvested Immortal Herbs 45.
  • Soul Tool Ring — Used to store items, including the book of cultivation insights he gives Li Fei 96.
  • Teleportation Token — Given by Li Fei; injecting soul power creates a temporary array connected to Li Fei’s established teleportation network 96.
  • Emergency dragon scale — Entrusted to Li Fei. Crushing it alerts Dugu Bo that the family needs his help 96.

Back Garden

  • Location: A remote, secluded valley in Sunset Forest containing the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and numerous Immortal Herbs 44 45.
  • Defenses: Green poisonous mist and poisonous soul beasts ranging from thousand-year to ten-thousand-year strength. Dugu Bo warns that even an ordinary Title Douluo could die forcing entry carelessly 44.
  • Cultivation value: The valley has unusually dense soul power and natural protection from steep surrounding cliffs 45.
  • Knowledge gap: Dugu Bo initially does not know the herbs’ names or effects, despite controlling the site. He permits Li Fei to use them once their value is explained 45.
  • Later use: Becomes a Li Family headquarters with his approval 53 67.

Relationships

  • Li Fei — Benefactor, close friend, protected junior, and granddaughter’s partner. Dugu Bo calls him “Little Fei” and “Little Monster,” later referring to him as his grandson-in-law 35 39 48 79.
  • Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and the focus of his protective efforts; he cures her poisoning, supports her breakup, and arranges her introduction to Li Fei 36 47 48.
  • Li Yusong — Fellow Li Family elder whom he helps obtain an eighth soul ring. He prioritizes Li Yusong’s advancement so the family can gain another powerful defender 66 72.
  • Flender — Ally whom he assists in hunting an eighth soul ring 57 58.
  • Yang Wudi — Initially confronted over threats against Li Fei; subsequently recruited into the Pill Pavilion with Dugu Bo’s backing 79 80.
  • Yu Tianheng — Dugu Yan’s former boyfriend, whose motives Dugu Bo distrusts. He opposes letting his granddaughter become entangled in the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s power struggles 36 47.
  • Emperor Xue Ye — Imperial contact who requests his assistance with the Grand General’s ninth soul ring; Dugu Bo uses the interaction to carry out Li Fei’s plans discreetly 116.
