He did not ride in an Armored Personnel Carrier. Instead, He read by the dim light of a desk lamp inside the caravan's compartment. Even though He no longer shone with dazzling radiance, mortals could still sense His presence and turn toward Him. So long as He wished it, no one in this world would be able to notice Him, yet He chose to do this anyway. It was not to display the essence of His power in the age when this civilization was born, but because it was necessary.

Mortals were not the only ones who could sense Him.

The Imperial Guard's Armored Personnel Carriers moved slowly at the head of the convoy, while the few hovering motorcycles scattered through patrols several kilometers around the caravan train. Praetorian Commander Constantine did not join the patrols. He walked beside the caravan carrying the Emperor, serving as the final line of defense. Although no human of this age could threaten the Imperial Guard, dangers left behind from the days when gods walked the earth still lingered in the world—humans had discovered that fire could drive away beasts and the incarnations of fear on the Material Plane, so they built bonfires. They waved torches to frighten the monsters in the night, just as the Sorcerer Supreme had taught Him, and as He had continued to do ever since—the Emperor would rather have those monsters that sensed Him come here, to this larger bonfire, or lose their courage because of His presence, than seek out mortals incapable of resistance.
