Background / History

Hatake Sakumo commanded Konoha's Anbu during its conflict with Root. Under his leadership, an Anbu operative rescued Sato Hideaka from Root agents, while Sakumo decisively defeated the remaining attackers 10.

Following the Genin Exam, the Third Hokage exceptionally recruited Hideaka into the Anbu, describing the organization as Konoha and the Land of Fire's frontline defense against foreign invasion 59. Hideaka entered Guren's squad under the codename Ao, receiving a monkey mask and a custom beige trench coat for operations 65.

Sakumo's failed Western Defense Line mission severely damaged the organization. The operation exposed twelve border outposts, caused extensive casualties, and culminated in Sakumo accepting responsibility for its failure 140. Before his death, Sakumo suspected an internal leak and transferred responsibility for the Anbu to Mitarashi Shishio 124. Hideaka later infiltrated the Anbu archives and identified the operative codenamed Hayabusa, who had been captured during Sakumo's final mission, as the apparent traitor 140.

Two years after joining, Ao became an Anbu captain and led his own animal-masked squad in border warfare and covert operations 133 146.

The Anbu is Konoha's elite force, selected from the village's most outstanding ninja. Its principal duties include:

Operations

Uchiha Escort Mission

Guren led three Anbu squads and the Konoha Military Police Force in an A-rank mission to protect Uchiha Kaoru from Kumogakure assassins, including Jōnin-level enemies 65. The operation became a multi-front battle involving Anbu, Root, the Uchiha Police Force, and Kumogakure agents 69 74.

Land of Hot Water Mission

Guren's squad investigated the Undying Cult in the Land of Hot Water. The team faced ambushes, cult influence within Yugakure, and a crisis surrounding human sacrifices and alleged undead ninja 76 83. The mission succeeded politically as well as militarily, strengthening Konoha's influence in the country, though five Anbu operatives died before the survivors returned 102.

Nine-Tails Emergency Response

Kirigakure Supply Raid
