Background

Sunagakure is based in the arid Land of Wind. Its harsh environment leaves it with few water sources and correspondingly few Water Release users; its shinobi primarily use Wind, Earth, and Fire Style, with a smaller number of Lightning Style users 155.

Before its war with Konoha, Sunagakure was described as the weakest of the Five Great Ninja Villages in both military and economic strength. The Land of Wind's barrenness, combined with two years of drought, severely limited its capacity to sustain a long conflict 139. Its internal military-financial crisis and factional disputes also created pressure for an external war 134 139.

History

Third Kazekage's disappearance

The disappearance of the Third Kazekage became the immediate catalyst for the conflict with Konoha. Although Sunagakure believed Konoha was connected to the incident, the Third Hokage later confirmed that Konoha had orchestrated the assassination to force a war on its own timetable 134 139.

Sasori possessed and controlled the Third Kazekage's body as a human puppet. The puppet retained Iron Sand Magnet Release, though Sasori acknowledged that it lacked the original Kazekage's combat awareness and precise power control 136 137.

Declaration of war

With the backing of Chiyo, Ebizo, and the elder council, the newly appointed Fourth Kazekage Rasa declared war on the Land of Fire, publicly citing Konoha's alleged killing of the Third Kazekage 145. Sunagakure invaded through the Land of Rivers, where its numerical advantage initially placed Konoha under pressure 145 153.

Early Western Front campaign

Sunagakure deployed an elite team under Sukehiro to target Konoha's medical unit. The operation failed when Sato Hideaka's Anbu squad ambushed and annihilated the twenty-four-man team; Sukehiro was crystallized during the battle 151.

Sunagakure later advanced with thousands of shinobi into Konoha's mountain traps. Konoha triggered a massive landslide, but Rasa intervened with Gold Sand to shield a substantial portion of his troops 153 154.

Valley of Hell setback

After retreating forces lured Konoha's Team B into a valley, Rasa led a large Sunagakure ambush against them 161. Sato Hideaka countered Rasa with Lava Release and the Fifth Gate of the Eight Inner Gates, temporarily suppressing the Kazekage's Gold Sand 162.

Hideaka subsequently created an eighty-meter Lava Giant and unleashed a torrent of magma through the valley. Rasa ordered a retreat, while Karura used yellow sand to rescue as many fleeing shinobi as possible 164 165. The encounter damaged Sunagakure's morale and shifted its posture toward defense 168.

Amegakure negotiations

To avoid a prolonged war of attrition, Chiyo and Ebizo sought an alliance with Amegakure. Sunagakure offered favorable terms, including Gold Sand, ninja scrolls, and recognition from a major power 186. Chiyo later proposed leasing Amegakure shinobi as mercenaries rather than requiring the village to openly enter the war 187.

The agreement was never finalized. Konoha secured Amegakure's neutrality, then ambushed the returning Sunagakure delegation; Ebizo was killed and Chiyo was captured after the ensuing battle 200 204.

Defeat and retreat

Konoha launched a surprise offensive against Sunagakure's camp while its forces still numbered roughly eighteen thousand. The attack caught the camp unprepared and forced its shinobi to organize a hurried defense 207 208.

Sunagakure answered by fielding Bunpuku and Shukaku. Despite Shukaku's absolute sand defense, partial transformation, and terrain-altering Magnet Release, Sato Hideaka broke through its defenses, bound the Tailed Beast with a Crystal Dragon, and sealed it using the Crystal Wall Eight Formation 214 216 217.

During the final battle, Konoha fielded eight thousand shinobi against sixteen thousand from Sunagakure. Konoha lost three thousand troops, while Sunagakure suffered nine thousand casualties; Hideaka alone killed over one thousand Sunagakure ninja 218. Lacking a complete medical-ninja system and exhausted by the campaign, Sunagakure withdrew from the front 218.

Continued wartime aims

Despite its losses, Rasa remained committed to restraining Orochimaru and preventing Konoha from reinforcing other fronts. He viewed the Land of Fire's fertile land and commerce as Sunagakure's opportunity to overcome the Land of Wind's poverty and harsh conditions 247.

Sunagakure later recovered Bunpuku and began considering the selection of a new Jinchūriki, while Rasa, Karura, and Shukaku's sealing remained major consequences of the Western Front campaign 247.
