Background / History

As a child, Gaara was cared for by Yashamaru, who had been assigned by the Kazekage to attend to and protect him. His automatic sand defense prevented him from being injured—even when he tried to stab his own hand—leaving him unable to understand physical pain. His isolation led him to ask Yashamaru whether he, too, hated him. 17

Yashamaru explains that pain can also be emotional and that love can heal wounds of the heart. These ideas remain with Gaara after his battle against Naruto, resurfacing as he begins to question his own worldview. 17

Gaara’s childhood memories also contain rejection and an assassination attempt. During Naruto’s clone barrage, he recalls Yashamaru saying that the Kazekage ordered his death and blaming him for the death of Yashamaru’s beloved sister. He also remembers being told that his mother named him an Asura who loves only himself out of hatred rather than love. These remembered statements reinforce his belief that he can continue to exist only by killing others. 14

After Shukaku’s suppression, Gaara recalls looking at a photograph of his mother, whom he had never met, and thinking of her as the woman he killed. The memory leads into his unsuccessful attempt to injure his own hand and his conversation with Yashamaru about pain. 16 17

Personality

Before his defeat, Gaara is deeply lonely, unstable, and convinced that killing others is necessary to prove that he exists. He identifies Sasuke as prey because Sasuke is strong, has comrades, and possesses goals—qualities Gaara sees as similar to himself. 11

Shukaku’s influence intensifies Gaara’s violent impulses. In his near-complete monster form, he attacks indiscriminately and is willing to threaten Sakura’s life to force Naruto into battle. 13

Naruto’s determination to protect his comrades confuses Gaara and causes him to reconsider the meaning of strength. After awakening, he apologizes to Temari and Kankuro and recognizes them as his siblings. 16 17

His fixation on killing can override Sunagakure’s operational goals: he ignores Temari’s reminder about their mission and concentrates on attacking Sasuke. Even pain from his severed sand arm initially makes him more exhilarated rather than deterring him. 11

Sunagakure Retreat and Sasuke Pursuit

Gaara is carried from the battlefield while unconscious as Temari and Kankuro attempt to escape Sasuke. After awakening, he abandons the retreat’s priorities and transforms in response to his fixation on Sasuke. 10 11

His role is important to the wider invasion plan. Orochimaru had intended to take Sasuke while Gaara created a diversion, and Temari insists during the retreat that Sunagakure’s plan must not be ruined. 6 10

Temari initially stays behind to hold off Sasuke while Kankuro carries Gaara onward. After Sasuke resumes his pursuit, Kankuro hands Gaara back to Temari and is intercepted by Shino Aburame. Gaara awakens just as Sasuke catches up to Temari again. 10 11

Battle Against Sasuke and Lin Mu

Gaara withstands Sasuke’s Chidori through sand regeneration, then nearly kills Sasuke before Lin Mu intervenes. Lin Mu’s Wood Release damages Gaara’s sand limbs, exposing the limits of Gaara’s chakra reserves and regeneration. 11 12

Lin Mu’s system assigns him a special mission to foil Sunagakure’s scheme and suppress Gaara, the One-Tail. This gives Lin Mu a direct incentive to intervene rather than leave Gaara’s defeat to Naruto. 11 15

After Gaara’s chakra is nearly exhausted, Lin Mu prepares to use a tailed-beast suppression experience card. Temari and Kankuro interrupt him with coordinated wind and puppet attacks, allowing Gaara time to recover and renew his assault on Sasuke. 13

Fight Against Naruto and Shukaku’s Awakening

Gaara threatens Sakura, repeatedly defeats Naruto, and transforms further when Naruto refuses to give up. Naruto’s shadow clones overwhelm him, prompting Gaara to manifest the One-Tail Shukaku. 13 14

Gaara then uses Feigned Sleep to let Shukaku fully awaken. Naruto and Gamabunta restrain the One-Tail long enough for Lin Mu to use Deep Forest Bloom and suppress it. 15 16

Before the full awakening, Gaara catches Naruto in Sand Binding Coffin and attempts to crush him. Naruto escapes the immediate danger by summoning Gamabunta. When Gamabunta’s experience proves superior to Gaara’s control of the giant body, Gaara emerges atop Shukaku’s head and deliberately puts himself to sleep. 14 15

Lin Mu’s suppression puts Shukaku into a deep slumber and causes the giant body to collapse into loose sand. Lin Mu and Gaara fall toward the forest, where Lin Mu uses his remaining chakra to cushion their descent with branches. 16

Beginning of Change

After the battle, Naruto’s resolve to protect others leaves Gaara confused and reflective. Recalling Yashamaru’s teachings, he begins to understand pain and love, apologizing to Temari and Kankuro before leaving with them. 16 17

Gaara refuses to continue fighting when his siblings arrive. His defeat also frees Sakura, whose sand restraint has already dissipated by the time Sasuke supports the exhausted Naruto. 16

The system subsequently confirms that Lin Mu completed the special mission to foil Sunagakure’s scheme and suppress Gaara. 18
