Background / History

Fudge became Minister after Albus Dumbledore refused repeated invitations to take the office and Barty Crouch Sr.'s candidacy collapsed amid his son's exposure as a Death Eater. Previously Deputy Minister, Fudge was considered an uncontroversial compromise candidate suited to preserving peacetime stability. 33

Early in his tenure, Fudge relied heavily on Dumbledore's advice because he lacked prestige.
