Background / History

Early life and Hogwarts

Tom Riddle was born to a Muggle father and a mother from the Gaunt family, who claimed descent from Salazar Slytherin. Although he was half-blood, he later built his movement around pure-blood supremacy and concealed or rationalized the contradiction for political advantage 208 219.

At Hogwarts, Riddle was handsome, academically brilliant, highly skilled in dueling, able to speak Parseltongue, and influential among Slytherin’s pure-blood heirs. He served as Slytherin prefect and Head Boy, while the group of followers he gathered—the Knights of Walpurgis—became the precursor to the Death Eaters 19 113.

During his school years, he opened the Chamber of Secrets, caused Myrtle’s death, and framed Hagrid. At sixteen, he created his first Horcrux, the diary; later that year, he murdered his father and grandparents and turned the Gaunt family ring into another Horcrux 31 256.

Despite his school achievements, Riddle lacked the family backing, inherited resources, and professional opportunities available to his aristocratic followers. He recognized that an ordinary career could leave him less successful than the students who had followed him, an outcome he was unwilling to accept 113.

Rise as Voldemort

After leaving Hogwarts, Riddle adopted the identity of Voldemort and gathered old pure-blood families behind a promise to restore their social dominance. Some followers accepted his ideology, while others joined from fear or calculated self-interest 40 102 219.

His repeated creation of Horcruxes greatly enhanced his Dark Magic but damaged his sanity, humanity, appearance, and capacity for empathy. By the time he returned to Hogwarts at thirty to seek the Defense Against the Dark Arts post, Dumbledore found him visibly distorted and rejected him outright 29 208 256. Voldemort also cursed the Defense Against the Dark Arts position 208.

Voldemort’s campaign remained confined to Britain because Dumbledore and the Order of the Phoenix prevented the Death Eaters from expanding abroad. His initial defeat was credited to the infant Harry Potter, whose survival followed Voldemort’s attempt to fulfill Trelawney’s prophecy 12 119.

Peter Pettigrew began working for Voldemort approximately a year before the attack on the Potters. After Sirius Black transferred the role of Secret Keeper to Peter, Peter disclosed the family’s address to Voldemort 80. Voldemort’s defeat ultimately resulted from Lily Potter’s protective magic, although the popular account that a baby had defeated him became a lasting humiliation 262 304.

The Death Eaters’ initial strength depended heavily on the resources, influence, and magical inheritances brought by pure-blood families. Their members generally possessed elite combat ability, and Voldemort’s guidance helped some talented followers become masters of Dark Magic. This gave the organization an advantage in average fighting strength over the Order of the Phoenix, although Dumbledore remained beyond its ordinary members 320 324.

Wandering soul and first destruction

Reduced to a remnant soul, Voldemort hid in Albania until Quirinus Quirrell found him and became his host. Voldemort ordered Quirrell to seek the Sorcerer’s Stone, while intending to use Hogwarts and Harry’s arrival as cover for his return 26 27.

Dumbledore confronted Quirrell at his home, evaded a Killing Curse, disintegrated Quirrell with the Elder Wand, and trapped Voldemort’s escaping soul behind a barrier. He then destroyed the wandering soul with Avada Kedavra 28.

Dumbledore later distinguished this wandering soul as Voldemort’s primary soul, which might still have been capable of further magical growth. Its destruction left the independently awakening Horcrux fragments as the means for subsequent returns 295.

Horcrux awakenings and Tom Gaunt

After the primary soul’s destruction, Voldemort’s Horcruxes began awakening independently. The youthful incarnation from Hufflepuff’s Cup recognized that he had died and proposed a deal to Isaac, who deliberately regarded Voldemort and the Death Eaters as potential political wild cards 113.

Vinda Rosier destroyed the Diadem’s soul fragment with Fiendfyre in the Room of Requirement, while Isaac destroyed the Cup during the Gringotts operation. The Locket’s fragment later confronted Isaac at the Black family home, demanded his loyalty, and attempted to possess him; the Locket was subsequently displayed by the Ministry as a Fiendfyre-destroyed artifact 42 114 207 208 230.

The diary fragment obtained a body after Lucius Malfoy supplied Dobby as a sacrifice. Adopting the name Tom Marvolo Gaunt, he rejected Voldemort’s former path and studied the Malfoy family’s broader magical collection while remaining concealed in the manor 254 255.

When Isaac and Harry discovered him, Tom attempted to separate his identity from the Voldemort who had killed Harry’s parents. He identified Isaac’s resemblance to Grindelwald and his prophetic ability, then unsuccessfully tried to turn Harry against Isaac by invoking Grindelwald’s crimes. Harry rejected this argument, and Isaac ultimately reduced Tom’s embodied form to ash with Phoenix Fire 260 261 262 263 264.

Lucius sealed the diary in a Dark Magic containment box and took it to America. There, Nige secretly appropriated it rather than reporting it to the Magical Congress. Tom remained able to communicate through its pages, taught Nige Dark Magic, and used Nige’s subsequent robbery to undermine his threat to hand the diary to the authorities 267 268 269.

Nige failed to destroy the Horcrux and was forced to compromise. Tom offered a deal, while the prospect of Voldemort’s hidden treasure encouraged Nige to seek the money for a pint of fresh dragon blood, costing 240 Galleons, to awaken the diary 269 270.

Resurrection Stone incarnation and lycanthropy

The ring fragment awakened after Voldemort’s death but became trapped by the original Voldemort’s own protective enchantments. Buried beneath the Gaunt Shack, it could neither escape nor draw life force from passing creatures. The ring’s curse could drain a wearer’s life force to nourish the fragment, but its isolation initially prevented this means of resurrection 300.

A resurrection attempt involving werewolves and Gilderoy Lockhart eventually provided an opening. However, Lockhart’s body had been consumed by a Sacrificial Ritual and was effectively an empty shell. Voldemort partitioned the body to escape the ritual and emerged in the weakened form of a two- or three-year-old child, unable to perform many of the advanced spells he understood 300 301.

With Ministry forces outside, Voldemort ordered the werewolves to delay them while he prepared ritual magic. Using Lockhart’s poorly matched wand, he established defenses and forcibly drained the werewolves’ life force through a restrained werewolf intermediary. This restored his body to that of a teenager, though not his full former strength 301 302 303.

The ritual also transferred lycanthropy through the werewolves’ life force, making Voldemort a werewolf. He intended to kill the witnesses, but Isaac conjured a moon imbued with lunar-phase magic, triggering the condition in both Voldemort and Lupin. As Sirius attacked with a Killing Curse, Voldemort transformed into black mist and fled 303 304 305 306.

Exile and attempts to rebuild

Following his escape, the werewolf incarnation avoided populated magical locations because a Ministry warrant had been issued for his arrest. Reading the Daily Prophet in a forest, he interpreted the lack of an explicit announcement of his return as evidence that Dumbledore and Fudge feared him 320.

His attempts to summon former followers through their Dark Marks failed. He concluded that the surviving Death Eaters were concealing themselves with the Fidelius Charm and vowed to rebuild without them, promising that later apologies would not be enough 320.

Fenrir Greyback then approached and questioned how much power the apparently injured Voldemort retained. Voldemort answered with the Cruciatus Curse. Greyback had underestimated him after reading the Ministry’s report and seeing his youthful appearance 320 321.

The loss of pure-blood support created practical difficulties beyond the shortage of followers. Voldemort no longer had uninterrupted access to rare materials, family resources, or house-elf labor, and his previous experience had involved consolidating established families rather than building an organization from nothing. Isaac recognized these limitations and deliberately favored allowing him time to remain a common enemy around whom British wizards could unite 324.

Appearance

Voldemort’s appearance changed drastically as his soul was divided. Tom Riddle was originally an exceptionally handsome young man, but repeated Horcrux creation left the later Voldemort monstrous and noseless 19 29.

• Werewolf incarnation — restored to a teenage body, not quite twenty, after absorbing werewolf life force. Greyback found him reminiscent of Voldemort at the beginning of the First Wizarding War, but noticeably younger 303 306 321.

Personality

Voldemort was ambitious, vain, controlling, and deeply insecure around Dumbledore. His fear of Dumbledore followed him from childhood through his Hogwarts years and into his rise as the Dark Lord; he never accepted that Dumbledore could see through his carefully constructed image 256 261.

He presented himself as the champion of pure-bloods despite his own Muggle parentage. Pure-blood families accepted this hypocrisy because his power and ideology appeared useful to their interests, but many later judged him too unstable and incompetent to rule safely 208 219.

His Horcruxes worsened his instability. When challenged, he readily shifted from persuasion to threats or violence, as shown by his attempt to possess Isaac after failing to secure his loyalty 208. However, the diary-derived Tom Gaunt retained more of the original teenage Riddle’s composure: he rejected the titles “Voldemort” and “Dark Lord,” studied broader magical disciplines, and tried to learn from Voldemort’s failures 254 260.

His fear of death was a major reason for embracing Horcruxes despite their costs. Dumbledore’s pressure made the prospect of a safeguard against outright destruction particularly attractive to the young Riddle 304.

The diary incarnation’s apparent reform did not end his manipulative behavior. He tried to redefine his responsibility for Voldemort’s crimes, exploit Harry’s relationship with Isaac, and later bind Nige to him through useful Dark Magic and incriminating knowledge 260 261 269.

The ring incarnation treated his forced lycanthropy as a lifelong humiliation and intended to kill those who witnessed it. Nevertheless, he retained enough decisiveness to flee rather than risk Sirius’s Killing Curse while the lunar magic disrupted him 303 304.

Even after losing his former support network, he remained confident that he could rebuild the Death Eaters. He interpreted Ministry discretion as cowardice and the refusal of his followers to answer him as disobedience deserving eventual punishment 320.

Abilities & Skills

Dark Magic and dueling

Voldemort possessed extraordinary magical and dueling talent from his student years. Dumbledore identified his Parseltongue, spellcasting talent, and dueling ability as the foundations of his exceptional status 20.

• Quirrell’s Killing Curse during Dumbledore’s confrontation with Voldemort and his host failed to touch Dumbledore 28.
• The sixteen-year-old diary incarnation could deflect Harry’s Incendio and withstand ordinary fire magic 262 263.
• His mature self was considered a top-tier combatant despite his instability; Isaac explicitly avoided the prospect of fighting Voldemort at full strength 208.
• His dependence on Dark Magic limited his versatility compared with Dumbledore and Grindelwald, who mastered broader magical disciplines 31.
• Despite that relative specialization, later assessments explicitly identify Voldemort as a genuine, veteran master of magic with mastery beyond Dark Magic. Phoenix Fire’s effectiveness against Dark Magic therefore did not make defeating the mature Voldemort straightforward 308 320.
• The ring incarnation used a pale-blue protective barrier to block attacks from Sirius and Lupin while completing his life-force ritual 303.

Horcrux creation

Voldemort used murder to split his soul and seal fragments into objects or living beings, gaining a corrupted form of immortality 29 207.

• Soul-splitting irreversibly degraded his sanity, humanity, and appearance 29.
• Horcrux fragments could revive after Voldemort’s death, creating independent incarnations with differing memories and mental states 113 208.
• A Horcrux was vulnerable to destructive magic such as Fiendfyre and Isaac’s Phoenix Fire 114 263.
• Dumbledore relayed a researcher’s theory that Horcrux creation tears away an incomplete fragment rather than dividing the soul evenly. An incarnation revived from such a fragment could at most recover Voldemort’s peak strength, without progressing beyond that ceiling 295.

Parseltongue and the Chamber of Secrets

Voldemort could speak Parseltongue and used the ability to open the Chamber of Secrets while at Hogwarts 19 256.

• Parseltongue strengthened his standing among Slytherin’s pure-blood students 19.
• The diary incarnation’s memories ended during his Hogwarts years; without access to the Chamber’s Basilisk, he was far less dangerous than the mature Voldemort 262.

Dark Mark

The Dark Mark was Voldemort’s signature brand for core Death Eaters and a major expression of his advanced Dark Magic 98.

• It distinguished official Death Eaters from peripheral followers and Snatchers 98.
• It allowed Voldemort and marked followers to transmit signals, locations, intelligence, and short commands 98.
• Voldemort could use it to summon his followers coercively 98.
• Dumbledore could not remove a Dark Mark after Voldemort’s fall 98.
• Its appearance reflected Voldemort’s condition: pitch-black during his active power and a faint, ineradicable scar after his downfall 102.

As a bodiless soul, Voldemort could inhabit or attempt to seize other bodies.

• The diary-derived Tom Gaunt gained a physical body by absorbing Dobby’s life force 260 263.
• The ring’s curse could consume its wearer’s life force and feed the soul fragment within, providing a route to resurrection 300.
• The ring incarnation escaped Lockhart’s compromised body but initially resurrected as a small child whose physical limitations prevented the use of many advanced spells 301.
• He forcibly extracted and concentrated multiple werewolves’ life force through an intermediary, restoring a teenage body and part of his strength 303.
• Forced sacrifices were inefficient compared with willing or trusting participants. The extraction process also failed to separate lycanthropy from the useful life force, transferring the condition to Voldemort 303.

Inferi and Dark artifact defenses

Voldemort created and concealed a force of more than a thousand Inferi in a protected seaside cave 219 230.

• The Inferi were likely made largely from Muggle corpses, alongside vanished victims of Death Eater attacks 219.
• The cave’s defenses included anti-Apparition magic, Inferi, and a potion basin guarding Slytherin’s Locket 207 220.
• Regulus Black infiltrated the cave, replaced the locket with a fake, and died after Inferi dragged him into the lake 207.

• Voldemort provided Quirrell with personal instruction in Dark Magic in exchange for use of his body as a host 27.
• His knowledge of dangerous shortcuts allowed him to turn willing wizards into elite combatants quickly, while exceptionally talented followers could reach mastery. These methods carried severe harm or hidden risks 319 320.
• The diary incarnation combined his Hogwarts knowledge with access to the Malfoy family’s magical books. He used instruction in Dark Magic to entice Nige and then leveraged Nige’s crimes to secure his cooperation 269.
• His previous success in organizing the Death Eaters did not amount to experience training an impoverished, uneducated force from scratch; it had relied on followers who already possessed resources and magical inheritances 324.

Lycanthropy and limitations

The ring-derived incarnation acquired lycanthropy through absorbed werewolf life force rather than a conventional bite. The condition was described as rooted in the victim’s soul and bloodline, allowing it to pass through the resurrection ritual 303.

• Full-moon transformation threatened his reason and left him dangerously vulnerable to coordinated enemies 303 306.
• Wolfsbane Potion offered a means of retaining control but would greatly weaken his combat strength 303.
• Isaac’s conjured moon incorporated astronomy, astrology, and lunar-phase knowledge rather than ordinary Transfiguration alone. It was sufficient to activate the lycanthropy in Voldemort and Lupin 304 305 306.
• His restored teenage body did not signify a complete return to his former peak 303.

Power Progression

Horcruxes

Voldemort created six Horcruxes, including Harry Potter as an accidental living vessel. Nagini had not yet been made into a Horcrux during Voldemort’s weakened period under Quirrell’s control 31.

Relationships

• Albus Dumbledore — lifelong enemy and the wizard Voldemort feared most. Dumbledore saw through Tom’s façade, rejected his Hogwarts post application, opposed his rise, and destroyed his wandering soul 28 256 261. Dumbledore later informed Fudge about the limitations of Horcrux-derived resurrection and helped warn former Death Eaters against the returned werewolf incarnation 295 309.
• Harry Potter — Voldemort marked Harry as his equal by choosing to attack him; Harry became both an accidental Horcrux and the central figure in the prophecy opposing him 31 119. The diary incarnation attempted to deny personal responsibility for the Potters’ deaths and persuade Harry that they should not be enemies, but Harry rejected him 260 261 262.
• Quirinus Quirrell — host and subordinate. Voldemort possessed Quirrell after Albania, punished him brutally, and used him in the search for the Sorcerer’s Stone 27 28.

• Death Eaters — followers bound through ideology, fear, political interest, and the Dark Mark. Their loyalty was generally weaker and more self-interested than Grindelwald’s Acolytes 40 98 219. Their former pure-blood support base abandoned the werewolf incarnation, and his later Dark Mark summons went unanswered 319 320.
• Regulus Black — former follower who discovered Voldemort’s Horcrux secret, stole Slytherin’s Locket, and died trying to ensure Voldemort would become mortal 207.
• Dobby — the house-elf whose life force enabled the diary-derived Tom Gaunt to obtain a body 260 263.
• Isaac Waldore — adversary who confronted multiple soul fragments, destroyed the Cup and Locket, burned Tom Gaunt’s embodied form, and exposed the ring incarnation’s lycanthropy with lunar magic 114 208 230 263 306. • Remus Lupin — Order of the Phoenix opponent who joined the assault on the Gaunt Shack. Isaac’s lunar magic affected both Lupin and the newly lycanthropic Voldemort 303 304.

• Nige — American wizard who appropriated the diary and tried to use knowledge of Voldemort’s identity as leverage. Tom Gaunt instead enticed him with Dark Magic and used evidence of his robbery to force a compromise 268 269.
• Gilderoy Lockhart — intended sacrifice in the ring incarnation’s resurrection. His body’s prior consumption by a Sacrificial Ritual disrupted Voldemort’s return and left him temporarily trapped in a child’s body 300 301.
• Fenrir Greyback — former ally who had never received the Dark Mark. After Voldemort became a werewolf, Greyback approached to test his weakened condition and was met with the Cruciatus Curse 320 321.
• Cornelius Fudge — Ministry leader who regarded Voldemort’s return as a threat but gained confidence from Dumbledore’s presence, the incarnation’s fixed potential, and the loss of pure-blood support. His administration sought to prevent former Death Eaters from returning to Voldemort 291 295 309 320.
