History

War with Sunagakure

After the Third Kazekage disappeared, Sunagakure blamed Konoha to divert attention from its internal succession struggle and invaded the Land of Fire under Rasa's command. Root intelligence gave Konoha advance warning, allowing the Third Hokage to appoint Orochimaru as frontline commander for a defensive counterattack. The resulting border war continued for nearly three years without a clear victor. 1

Konoha broke the stalemate through the Battle of Kikyo City. Jiraiya led a feint against Sunagakure's front line while Orochimaru commanded the main assault on the city; the Uchiha clan served as the vanguard. 2 3 Orochimaru and Jiraiya subdued Shukaku, forcing Sunagakure's forces to surrender and ending the battle. 4

In early Konoha Year 46, the Land of Wind formally submitted a letter of surrender and peace to the Land of Fire. Konoha's returning forces were welcomed as heroes, though the village also mourned the many casualties of the war. 4

Rōran Mission

Following Sunagakure's defeat, some of its commissioned missions were transferred to Konoha. One such assignment concerned Rōran's unstable Dragon Vein; because it was a cross-border mission, the Hokage elevated it from A-rank to S-rank. 8 9

Minato's team investigated Mukade's exploitation of the Dragon Vein and Rōran's chakra-pipe network. After Mukade's defeat, Minato sealed the Dragon Vein permanently with Queen Sara's approval to prevent its future misuse. 9 16

War with Iwagakure

When Iwagakure reinforced its front-line forces after its war with Kumogakure, Konoha's leadership assembled an emergency council and prepared for another major conflict. 21 The clans pledged 320 shinobi—ten elite jonin, twenty jonin, twenty special jonin, 120 chunin, and 150 genin—while additional civilian shinobi were mobilized separately. 22

Namikaze Minato led more than 1,000 reinforcements to Jiraiya's front-line camp, where Konoha prepared to contest Iwagakure's pressure around the strategically vital Kannabi Bridge. 24 Konoha later won the decisive clash in the Land of Grass after Uchiha Aoba's Susanoo devastated the opposing forces, compelling Ōnoki to concede. 26 27

Despite victory, Konoha's negotiating team agreed to an alliance with Iwagakure without demanding war reparations, following Hiruzen's policy of preserving peace. 31

Internal Affairs

Konoha's relationship with the Uchiha Clan is described as increasingly strained. Hiruzen acknowledges that pressure from Danzō, Koharu, and other officials has alienated the clan from the village. 17

To address this divide, Hiruzen places Uchiha Aoba under Minato's command and intends for Aoba to serve as a bridge between the Uchiha and Konoha. 17 32 Uchiha Fugaku supports this arrangement, viewing Aoba's connection to Minato as a more secure future for the clan. 22

Danzō openly opposes Aoba's advancement and distrusts the Uchiha, warning that Aoba could become another Uchiha Madara. Hiruzen rejects Danzō's demands to suppress or recall Aoba, insisting that Aoba is a Konoha shinobi within Minato's lineage. 7 30
