Ch. 401Devouring the Abyss
Plot points and events
- A chaotic consciousness that has lived for centuries in gray fog reveals its instinctive way of growing: it infects living beings, cultivates warped reason in them, and consumes it. Recently, sensing a natural enemy, it hastily took over a high-grade Xuan-level insect mother nest to become stronger.
- Lu Zhen fights the resulting monster in the Treasure Land, cutting through its seemingly endless tentacles but failing to reach the consciousness at its core. He is badly pressured and clutches the black box containing the Nine Nether Annihilation Thunderbolt.
- Meanwhile, the monster’s assault overwhelms Three Sects City’s grand formation. The barrier breaks, and gray fog pours into the city, leaving hundreds of millions facing apparent doom.
- Guga emerges from Lu Zhen’s clothes and transforms into a hundred-meter-tall black-and-white beast. Using her Soul Devouring ability, she pulls the monster’s hidden consciousness out of the mother nest and swallows it.
- With its consciousness gone, the mother nest and its tentacles collapse. The gray fog dissipates, the formation’s defenders and the people of Three Sects City realize the threat is over, and the city erupts in relief and celebration.
Character developments and interactions
- Lu Zhen remains determined and fights at full strength, but briefly feels helpless against the monster’s overwhelming power. He is stunned when Guga defeats it effortlessly, especially since he believed her ability worked only against beings of comparable rank.
- Guga reveals a far greater scale of power than Lu Zhen expected, defeating the monster by targeting its consciousness rather than its enormous physical body. The effort leaves her exhausted; she returns to Lu Zhen’s arms and falls asleep.
- Shi Kefa is injured while sustaining the city’s formation and can only acknowledge that it has failed. He and Jiang Li, along with the citizens, are left in disbelief when the danger suddenly vanishes.
- Lu Zhen initially tells Guga not to interfere, but she acts independently and ultimately saves him and the city.
Significant themes

- Mind versus body: The monster’s vast physical form is powerless once its animating consciousness is extracted.
- Despair transformed into hope: The city moves from accepting imminent death to celebrating survival within moments.
- Instinct and survival: The monster’s growth and desperate use of the mother nest are driven by fear of its natural enemy.
