Xiao Chen's father once saved Xiao Zhan's life. In return, Xiao Zhan continued providing Xiao Chen with resources from his personal cultivation supplies even when Xiao Chen had no interest in cultivating. Story Role / Major Arcs
Recognition of Xiao Chen
During the Xiao Family's annual Dou Qi test, Xiao Zhan is astonished when Xiao Chen is revealed as a one-star Dou Zhe. He immediately orders that the result be kept secret under penalty for betraying the clan, then takes Xiao Chen to a secret chamber to speak privately. 10
Concerned that Xiao Chen may have used a forbidden method to advance, Xiao Zhan questions him about his sudden cultivation. After hearing Xiao Chen's account of a mysterious alchemist master, he abandons his earlier plan to send him to the Cloud Mist Sect for protection. Instead, he gives Xiao Chen the Xiao Family's Huang-tier high-level close-combat Dou Technique, Mountain Crushing Palm, stressing that personal strength is the foundation of survival. 11
Conflict with the Jialie and Aoba Families
After Xiao Chen kills two Dou Shi at the Xiao Family market, Xiao Zhan first confirms that he is unharmed, then praises his combat ability and judgment. He investigates the attackers' identities and identifies the Jialie Family as the apparent source, while acknowledging that the Aoba Family could have staged the incident as a frame-up. 14
Regardless of which family was responsible, Xiao Zhan decides both the Jialie and Aoba Families must pay for targeting Xiao Chen. He explicitly tells Xiao Chen to prioritize his own safety and promises that the Xiao Family will bear the consequences even if Xiao Chen wrongly judges someone as a threat. 14
Following the destruction of the Jialie Family leadership, Xiao Zhan mobilizes Xiao clansmen to seize its businesses. He also offers to supply alchemy materials to Xiao Chen's supposed master as thanks for the benefits the Xiao Family receives. 18
After Xiao Chen eliminates the Aoba Family's strongest members, Xiao Zhan oversees the cleanup of their assets. Within two days, the Jialie and Aoba Families are removed, ending Wutan City's three-family balance and leaving the Xiao Family in control. 19
When Wutan City's City Lord offers to yield his post to the Xiao Family, Xiao Zhan refuses. He recognizes that the position is appointed by the Gama Empire's royal family and that formally taking it could bring imperial retaliation. 19
Xiao Chen's Departure
Eight years after Wutan City's unification, Xiao Zhan supports Xiao Chen's decision to leave on a journey after learning that it is supposedly a test arranged by his master. He gives Xiao Chen a gold card as a parting gift. 19
Although saddened by Xiao Yan's decline, Xiao Zhan accepts Xiao Chen's reassurance that Xiao Yan's difficult period is temporary and that he will rise again. 19
Personality
Xiao Zhan is protective of his family, particularly Xiao Chen. He responds to threats against Xiao Chen with anger and decisive plans for retaliation, placing Xiao Chen's safety above the political consequences of conflict with rival clans. 14
As patriarch, he is pragmatic and alert to larger political risks. He quickly exploits the fall of rival families to expand the Xiao Family's influence, but refuses the City Lord position to avoid drawing the Gama Empire's attention. 18 19
He is also receptive to talent and advice. Xiao Chen's advancement earns his admiration, and he is willing to reconsider plans—such as sending Xiao Chen to the Cloud Mist Sect—when new circumstances arise. 11 14
