"How is Mash doing?" Roman held several documents as he walked through Chaldea's corridors, reading them as he asked.
"Mash's design flaw was congenital. I originally thought Galahad's Saint Graph acting upon her was what had shortened her lifespan, but in reality..." Lawrence clasped her hands before her as she walked beside Roman. "You never told me that her maximum operational lifespan was only eighteen years."
"...Can she be saved?"
Roman stopped walking and looked at Lawrence, tears in his eyes.
Lawrence's clasped hands curled into fists, and she pressed her lips together slightly.
But in the end, she smiled.
"Don't worry. I'm one of the finest doctors in human history."
"I will definitely find a way to keep Mash alive."
She took two steps forward, moving in front of Roman. Her clenched fist rested against her chest, atop that enormous gemstone, determination written across her brow.
"I told you, Roman. I've had enough of watching lives in their prime fade away before my eyes."
"Yeah, I believe in you." Roman's smile was gentle. He had always been gentle.
The two continued walking.
"Actually, Leonardo once told me that your original dream wasn't to become a great doctor. So what was your first dream?"
Apparently wanting to ease the heavy mood, Roman asked the question.
There were no sweets at hand for him now, but he still wanted to feel a little better.
"Don't people's dreams and wishes arise from their desires? Besides, becoming a doctor was never my dream." Lawrence walked on, her high heels echoing through the corridor far louder than Roman's dress shoes. "It was only a notion, nothing more. Never a dream."
"It wasn't...?" Roman froze awkwardly, feeling that he might really need to practice his conversational skills.
"My first dream was simply to earn a
