About seventy people had passed Gawain's test, and all of them had cleared the second trial as well. But this unexpected third trial had stopped the vast majority in their tracks.
Arthur sat at the head of the Round Table, looking at the knights who had passed the trials and sat beside her.
First were the three examiners: Gawain, Agravain, and Anno. Then, in the order they had passed the trials, came Pindo, Kay, Lamorak, Lancelot, Bedivere, Tristan, and Bors.
King Arthur couldn't help laughing. "In the end, it's still only you who are qualified to sit at the same table with me and discuss matters."
Kay smiled and nodded. "To be honest, among all the knights in the kingdom, we're probably the only ones who could have correctly answered Uncle Anno's question."
At that, everyone nodded.
In Britain, knights were expected to respect the lives of the common people. For a knight, Anno's question had only one wrong answer: harming the people.
By the same token, as long as you didn't take anyone's life, your answer was right.
There were plenty of loopholes in the question, but it was enough to stump people of this era.
Even so, only these few at the Royal Court could confidently swear that they wouldn't harm the people.
Arthur stood up and said solemnly, "Then, everyone, please take your seats under the watchful eyes of the court mages."
Once everyone was seated, Arthur glanced at Merlin, who was standing to one side, and nodded.
Then she drew the Sword of Promised Victory from its scabbard and raised it high, pointing it toward the center of the Round Table.
Anno drew Chalk, Gawain drew the Sword of Revolving Victory, and Lancelot also drew Arondight, given to him by the Lady of the Lake.
All
