Background / History
Artoria was born into the Pendragon family of the Holy Britannian Empire: King Arthur's direct bloodline and a royal house with legal legitimacy over the imperial throne. Although low in the succession order, she grew up amid court intrigue and became highly sensitive to hostile attention. She left Britannia for Yingzhou rather than become a political possession of the royal establishment. 2 53
The worldwide Light Screen broadcast publicly connected her to King Arthur, showing an identical girl as the female monarch of the Knights of the Round Table. The exposure drew governmental scrutiny, public attention, and expectations that she would become Britannia's ruler. 2 6 101
During the Songstress calamity, Su Yun used Fantasy Manifestation to operate Artoria's body in battle. The incident ended with the destruction of a Level 4 Mystery Calamity and established her as humanity's first public proof of extraordinary anti-Mystery power. 10 11
Soon afterward, Artoria met King Arthur's residual will in a dream. Arthur explained that she was Artoria's past life, trained her as a knight, and revealed that the historical king had presented herself as male through Merlin's illusion. 13
Artoria chose to remain in Yingzhou, openly cooperate with official anti-Mystery forces, and use her power against Mysteries. Her royal standing and status as the first manifest superhuman allowed her to negotiate favorable terms with the Countermeasures Office. 31
Appearance
Artoria is a blonde, green-eyed girl with a distinctive ahoge and a normally simple ponytail. Her resemblance to King Arthur is exact aside from styling; in King Arthur's appearance, her hair is pinned up rather than worn loose at the nape. 2 3
- Her ahoge stiffens and points toward people whose hostile intent she detects. 2
- Her Maiden Knight form consists of white armor, a white dress, a black hair ribbon, and an engraved jewel-set knight's sword. 32
- Her King Arthur manifestation adds the blue cloak and imposing bearing associated with the Knight King. 38
- Following her later enhancement, she wears armor matching Saber's Light Screen appearance. 314
Personality
Artoria is principled, independent, and strongly protective. She refuses to be treated as a political asset or someone's possession, yet accepts that her power carries obligations toward both Britannia and humanity. 53
Despite her public image as King Arthur's confident reincarnation, she struggles with self-doubt and feels inadequate compared with the idealized King Arthur she admires. Her resolve is rooted in the desire to protect the people she cherishes; this lets her endure painful training and continue fighting after defeat. 13 40 187
She is compassionate toward innocent victims but pragmatic against those irreversibly corrupted by Mystery. During the Orléans crisis, she deliberately contained the battle and bought time for civilian evacuation despite being under pressure from Jeanne d'Arc Alter. 33 200
Artoria rejects popular demands that she seize Britannia's throne. She instead wishes to live in the present as Artoria Pendragon and fight beside Yao Guang-Chaldea as a colleague rather than rule as a monarch. 915
Abilities & Skills
King Arthur Template
Artoria possesses the King Arthur (fate) template, which grants access to the magical energy, combat potential, and inherited abilities associated with Saber. 30
- Her early power is incomplete; King Arthur's full inheritance initially remains dormant because Artoria cannot yet awaken it. 314
- Magic power is a finite resource, and prolonged high-output combat causes visible fatigue. 200 201
- Her King Arthur form can manifest alongside a phantom of her past self. 38
Instinct — A Rank
Artoria's Instinct is an exceptional sensory ability that warns her of danger and supports combat decisions. 10
- During Fantasy Manifestation, it clearly detects activity within a 500-meter radius. 10
- Her intuition can identify concealed threats that others fail to notice. 191
- It reacts urgently to ambushes, such as the sea monsters hidden within a wyvern. 320
Swordsmanship and Mana Burst
Dream training and repeated Ascension Sanctuary battles turned Artoria from an inexperienced novice into a skilled frontline fighter. 13 187 199
- She uses Mana Burst to compensate for inferior raw strength and produce explosive movement and striking power. 200
- By the Jeanne d'Arc Alter rematch, her assessed parameters are Strength B, Agility A, Endurance A, Mana A, and Noble Phantasm A++. 320
- She favors speed, technique, and positioning over direct strength contests against stronger opponents. 200
- Her training includes realistic death, repeated failure, modern traps, and coordinated enemies, sharpening both her combat judgment and mental resilience. 187 970
Wind King's Barrier
Wind King's Barrier envelops Artoria's sword in invisible wind and supports high-mobility combat. 199 314
- Conceals the Sword of Promised Victory's appearance and therefore her weapon's identity. 314
- Creates gusts capable of dispersing dragon breath and destabilizing airborne enemies. 200
- Allows midair redirection, acceleration, charging, and controlled descent, but does not grant true flight. 199 201
- Can be used offensively to force a passage through Jeanne d'Arc Alter's black flames. 320
Riding — A Rank
Artoria can take control of mounts even under hostile conditions. 320
- She commandeered a wyvern, infused it with mana, and used it against Jeanne d'Arc Alter's own swarm. 320
- Her mana reinforcement made the controlled wyvern faster and stronger than before. 320
Charisma — B Rank
Artoria possesses King Arthur's ability to inspire those around her. 202
- Her presence naturally reassures civilians and improves the morale of people under her leadership. 202
- B-rank Charisma is described as sufficient to govern a nation. 202
Sword of Promised Victory / Sword of Stars
Artoria's holy sword is the Sword of Promised Victory, whose true nature is the planet-forged Sword of Stars: an EX-class Noble Phantasm created to resist invaders. 101 169
- Her initial “Sword in the Stone” is revealed to be a concealed form of the Sword of Promised Victory. 314
- An inherited, fully released Excalibur strike destroyed the Star Corruptor, but that inherited power could only be used once at the time. 38 56
- The true Sword of Stars requires the approval of the Knights of the Round Table to release its thirteen restraints. 168 320
- Even in its sealed state, the sword lets Artoria kill Jeanne d'Arc Alter repeatedly and cut through her black flames. 320
- Full release is unavailable while the restraints remain sealed. 314 804
Relationships
- Su Yun — Her Destiny liaison, first Operator connection, and romantic partner. Su Yun helped orchestrate her growth, confessed his feelings, and supports her operations; Artoria trusts him deeply. 31 40 324
- King Arthur — Her past-life residual will and first mentor. Arthur reveals their shared identity and trains Artoria in dream time. 13
- Black King Arthur — Her harsh Ascension Sanctuary trainer and dark counterpart. She repeatedly defeats and mocks Artoria, but later guides her toward awakening her true power. 77 187 314
- Morgan — Her sisterly ally and supporter. Morgan encourages Artoria after public comparisons and protects her interests against political pressure. 101
- Baal — Her Countermeasures Office liaison, an elite investigator assigned to coordinate Artoria's missions and requests. 30
- Mordred — The Knight of Rebellion from King Arthur's past. Artoria recognizes her with conflicted shock; during their later meeting in the Soul Ring, Artoria affectionately calls her “Mo.” 48 971
- Lant, Gawain, and Tristan — Awakened Knights of the Round Table who initially seek to pledge fealty to her. Artoria asks them to stand beside her as colleagues in Yao Guang-Chaldea instead. 915
- Arcueid Brunestud — Her cousin. Artoria remains close to Arcueid and acts as a caring older-sister figure after their reunion. 397 462
- Jeanne d'Arc Alter — A powerful Mystery-created opponent in Orléans. Artoria repeatedly defeats her in direct combat but must contend with her resurrection and dragon forces. 199 320
Story Role / Major Arcs
Public Exposure and the Songstress Incident
The Light Screen identifies Artoria as King Arthur before a global audience, placing a sheltered royal student under immense scrutiny. Soon after, her manifested power helps end the Songstress calamity and demonstrates that humanity can fight Mysteries. 2 11
First Operator Missions
After becoming Destiny's first known Operator, Artoria accepts anti-Mystery missions without hesitation. Her first independently led operation against the Yukinoshita-family Mystery raises her to Level 11 and establishes her willingness to destroy corrupted victims she cannot save. 30 33 34
King Arthur's Inheritance
Artoria manifests King Arthur's form during the Star Corruptor attack and annihilates the enemy with Excalibur. The feat turns her into a worldwide symbol of hope, eventually leading Yao Guang-Chaldea to publicly introduce her as King Arthur's reincarnation. 38 82
Orléans Crisis
Artoria makes a 13,000-meter parachuteless descent into Orléans to confront Jeanne d'Arc Alter. Initially unable to overcome the enemy's immortality, she holds the battlefield for civilian evacuation, receives an epic enhancement, awakens the Sword of Promised Victory, and decisively outclasses Jeanne in their rematch. 199 200 314 320
Ascension Sanctuary
Artoria continually uses Ascension Sanctuary's brutal training systems, including Black King Arthur's one-on-one instruction, the trap-filled Goblin Forest, coordinated Lahmu battles, and the psychologically punishing Soul Ring. These trials repeatedly expose the limits of her individual strength while reinforcing her resolve to improve. 187 396 970
Artoria Caster Light Screen Narrative
A later Light Screen story presents Artoria Caster, an amnesiac mage in the Forest of No Name. She befriends the amnesiac Yun, becomes the current Child of Prophecy destined to save the Land of Fairies, and wrestles with the same lack of confidence that affects Artoria in the present. 1249 1253 1266 1275
