Nature and Behavior
The Dungeon is a vast subterranean labyrinth whose true end is unknown even to the gods. Entering it separates adventurers from the surface world’s sun, moon, seasons, and elements, replacing them with an endlessly descending environment of caverns, monsters, and danger. 22
It is explicitly described as alive. Rather than acting as a passive setting, it waits for adventurers to become vulnerable, sets traps, and exploits lapses in vigilance to force them into desperate situations. 22 28
- It generates monsters directly from its walls. 22
- Its monster population and activity can change abruptly, causing adventurers to suspect an impending anomaly. 23
- Excessive destruction of the Dungeon environment may trigger an anomaly. 24
- Monsters that consume too many magic stones can become dangerous Irregulars. 7
Known Floors and Regions
| Floor / Region | Features | Notable Threats or Events |
|---|---|---|
| 1st–5th Floors | Upper-floor territory inhabited by weak monsters such as Kobolds. 22 | Kobolds are considered cannon-fodder monsters, though they may appear in numbers. 22 |
| 11th–12th Floors | Upper-floor wilderness; the 12th Floor was where Ais encountered Thanatos and the Jet-Black Wyvern. 2 | Young Dragons appear on the 11th and 12th Floors and are regarded as the upper floors’ de facto bosses. 22 |
| 13th Floor | The “First Line of Death,” also called the Rock Cave Labyrinth; damp fog, long corridors, vertical shafts, and separation hazards define the area. 23 | Hellhounds use fire attacks, while Horned Rabbits throw stone axes. 23 |
| 17th Floor | Contains the Wall of Sighs, a smooth white wall from which the floor boss is born. 25 | Goliath, a Level 4-equivalent Floor Boss with immense strength and regeneration. 25 |
| 18th Floor | A circular safe zone with Northern Wetlands, Western Lake, Eastern and Southern Forests, and the Central Great Tree leading to the 19th Floor. 40 | Monsters still spawn, but generally do not aggressively attack unless provoked. A Sky Crystal creates a surface-like day-and-night cycle. 40 |
| 37th Floor | Reached by the Loki Familia during its expedition. 48 | The Dungeon launched a strike involving Obsidian Soldier units, forcing the expedition to retreat. 48 |
Abilities and Properties
Monster Generation
The Dungeon’s walls can crumble and release newly formed monsters into surrounding chambers. This occurred as Noah’s party advanced through the upper floors. 22
- Monster strength, quantity, and respawn speed increase substantially in the middle floors. 23
- Middle-floor monsters possess ranged attacks in addition to melee capabilities. 23
- Defeated monsters leave behind magic stones and other materials, allowing adventurers to profit from exploration. 4
Ambushes and Environmental Threats
The Dungeon uses its terrain and timing to endanger explorers rather than relying only on direct monster attacks. Riveria warns that even high-level adventurers may survive deep-floor expeditions only to die on the upper floors through carelessness. 22
- It may exploit weakened or distracted adventurers with traps and sudden attacks. 28
- During the Goliath incident, it struck at a critical moment, turning an already dangerous encounter into a near-fatal situation for the Astraea Familia. 28
- Thanatos’s use of Arcanum on the 12th Floor caused the labyrinth to shake violently and sections of its walls and passages to collapse. 2
Dungeon Strikes
A “Dungeon strike” is a major hostile response encountered during exploration.
- The Loki Familia encountered a strike on the 37th Floor after reaching it in record time, with Obsidian Soldier units appearing first. 48
- The danger of such responses forced the expedition to withdraw despite Noah serving as its vanguard. 48
Story Role / Major Incidents
- Ais’s flight into the Dungeon — After fleeing Riveria, Ais enters the 12th Floor and uses combat against its monsters to suppress her loneliness. Thanatos subsequently exploits the location to confront her and release a strengthened Jet-Black Wyvern. 2
- Noah’s first ordeal — Noah becomes lost in the Dungeon after intervening against Thanatos’s group and fighting the Jet-Black Wyvern. He kills monsters while navigating the labyrinth and later sells their drops in Babel. 2 3 4
- First Line of Death expedition — Noah, Riveria, and Ais rapidly descend from the upper floors to the 13th Floor, where the Dungeon’s terrain and ranged monsters mark the beginning of the middle-floor danger zone. 22 23
- Goliath battle — Noah’s party reaches the 17th Floor’s Wall of Sighs on his first Dungeon expedition. Goliath’s appearance later endangers the Astraea Familia before Noah defeats it. 25 27 28 30
- 37th Floor strike — The Loki Familia reaches the 37th Floor in four days, but the Dungeon’s strike interrupts the expedition and compels a retreat. 48

“The Dungeon is alive! It waits patiently for the right moment, sets traps in the shadows, and the second the adventurers let their guard down, it seizes the opportunity to push the creatures of the Lower World into an abyss of despair!” 28
