"Pain..." Zhang Ruofeng sat up, clutching his forehead as the bright sunlight stung his eyes, making it difficult to keep them open.
"Is the sunlight in the afterlife this bright?" Zhang Ruofeng frowned. Opening his eyes, he found himself lying on a hillside. The surrounding environment was utterly unfamiliar; as a university student from a major metropolis, Zhang Ruofeng couldn't even find the words to describe it. Looking out, he saw a vast green plain, a large river in the distance reflecting the sunlight, and further still, the massive walls of a town. The grey-blue walls stretched beyond his field of vision, and the rooftops of various buildings were faintly visible above them.
"Do you end up in a place like this when you die?" Zhang Ruofeng scratched his hair in frustration, reaching up to feel for a halo, but he felt nothing, and looking up revealed nothing either.
"Hah, what am I thinking? This isn't Dragon Ball." Zhang Ruofeng gave a bitter laugh and stood up, discovering that his clothes were completely undamaged. He checked his pockets and found his phone, keys, and wallet were all there, along with his cigarettes and lighter. However, for some reason, his phone wouldn't turn on.
"What kind of situation is this?" Zhang Ruofeng habitually opened his cigarette pack and lit one up. He frowned immediately; there were still seven cigarettes in the pack, just as there had been before, yet the sensation of the smoke in his lungs was undeniably real. This left Zhang Ruofeng momentarily at a loss.
"This is truly hellish." Zhang Ruofeng gave a self-deprecating smile and began walking toward what appeared to be a gate. "Why isn't anyone here to meet me? Is it a busy day for deaths, and they're short-staffed on soul guides?" Zhang Ruofeng felt a massive headache coming on from his current state of total ignorance. Thinking about how he'd died like an idiot, ending his life so abruptly only to arrive in this bizarre place, he could only offer a bitter laugh and light another cigarette. As he pulled it out, the pack once again contained seven cigarettes.
With a pounding headache, Zhang Ruofeng reached the riverbank and drank his fill, though his physical state made him feel as if he hadn't even needed the water.
"Don't tell me I've actually transmigrated in some ridiculous fashion..." After finishing the water, he felt his body's thirst subside and the sensation of droplets sliding down his face. He looked horrified. "Damn it, isn't this supposed to be the kind of thing that happens to female office workers?!" Zhang Ruofeng roared at the sky. No one paid him any mind, his shout simply dissipating across the plains.
Zhang Ruofeng sat down hard on the ground, the pain shooting from his tailbone due to the impact serving as further confirmation that he had indeed transmigrated in this absurd manner.
With no other options, Zhang Ruofeng stood up and slowly crossed a wooden bridge on his left. Looking up, he saw a few households on the other side, each in a wooden house. The medieval style, reminiscent of anime and movies, confirmed to Zhang Ruofeng that he had truly transmigrated. A complex mix of emotions—excitement, panic, confusion, exhilaration, homesickness, and worry—all welled up at once, leaving him feeling deeply unsettled.
Just then, a person wearing a large hat and carrying a massive pot of light blue flowers emerged from a wooden house. Zhang Ruofeng hurried over and realized it was a very slender woman, but he couldn't care less about social graces at this point. He stepped forward and asked, "Hello?"
The woman moved the blue flowers aside, revealing her face, and tilted her head at Zhang Ruofeng's words.
Zhang Ruofeng was instantly struck speechless. Before him was a face of perfect beauty; from every angle, the woman was breathtaking. She looked to be about twenty years old, with pale red hair, ruby-like eyes, and features so exquisite they were beyond reproach. Her presence made Zhang Ruofeng feel as though the flowers in her hands were the most beautiful in the world.
Zhang Ruofeng bit his tongue hard, forcing his attention away from her face, and asked, "Hello, may I ask where this is?" His urgency didn't seem to get through, as the woman just tilted her head again, looking adorable.
"!(%.&#)" The woman spoke softly, but Zhang Ruofeng couldn't understand a word. He realized then that their languages were completely incompatible; this goddess-like woman was speaking neither Chinese nor English.
"This is truly a pain." Zhang Ruofeng pulled out his lighter and cigarettes with a headache, lighting one up as he stared gloomily at the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
The woman watched him, then seemed to realize something. She set down the flower pot, clapped her hands, and smiled as she approached him. Zhang Ruofeng retreated a step in caution, but the woman didn't give up. She reached out and pressed a finger to his lips. A flash of white light shimmered on her hand, and while Zhang Ruofeng was still thinking, What the hell?!, her soft voice, like a breeze over a flower field, echoed: "That should do it."
"Ah... ah?" For a moment, Zhang Ruofeng thought he must be hallucinating from his desperate desire to communicate, but the woman just smiled at him: "Welcome to Orario, otherworlder."
"You've got to be kidding me?" Zhang Ruofeng was too shocked to speak. He could understand her now, even though he could tell from her lip movements that she was speaking a different language. Yet, to his ears, it was perfectly clear Chinese. It was astonishing. "What... what did you do?" Zhang Ruofeng stepped back, covering his mouth with his hand, finding nothing had changed, yet he could definitely understand her.
"It's nothing, really. For a deity, this is a piece of cake. Even if I can't use much of my divinity, this much is a trivial task." The woman straightened her head and gave a slight smile.
"A deity? Huh?" Zhang Ruofeng's brain stalled again. "Wait... Orario? The name sounds familiar." Zhang Ruofeng clutched his head, cold sweat breaking out instantly. "Is it Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?"
"Well, I don't know what you're talking about," the goddess continued with a smile, "but your magical flow is different from the children of this world, so I recognized you right away."
"Magic? That stuff actually exists?" Zhang Ruofeng's internal monologue was intense. "And she's a goddess... no wonder she's this beautiful." Zhang Ruofeng looked her up and down; she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. It wasn't just her face; her proportions were perfect, and she wore a light blue lace dress that was both alluring and wholesome. To keep from staring, he quickly looked away.
"Haha, what a shy child," the woman laughed happily. "From what you said, you know about this world, don't you?"
"Well..." Zhang Ruofeng frowned. "I'm just not sure if it's the same world as the anime I watched. Dungeons, Familias, gods, and the powers they bestow..." Zhang Ruofeng listed the key points he knew.
"That is truly incredible. Your world actually has such detailed knowledge of ours." The goddess clapped her hands happily. "The unknown is always the most interesting. I'd love to visit other worlds too."
"But, oh, but," the goddess suddenly stepped right in front of Zhang Ruofeng. Being nearly the same height, she was almost pressed against him, and the scent of flowers washed over him. Zhang Ruofeng felt his heart stop. "Will you... join my Familia?"
