Background
Zhang Ruofeng was a 20-year-old college student who cultivated an outwardly quiet, inarticulate persona while belonging to his university’s Anime Club. Before arriving in Orario, he had been involved in fights and carried a concealed violent past. He had been bullied, learned self-defense, and bore two knife scars on his back and another on his abdomen. Xin Mu later recalled an incident in which he secretly knocked out a man who had hurt one of his friends; the victim subsequently left school due to psychological trauma. 1 14
Despite attempting to remain unnoticed, Zhang had notable physical strength even before receiving a Divine Blessing. Xin Mu had seen him carry a heat-stricken roommate on one shoulder, and he could crush Weak Mushrooms bare-handed during his first Dungeon expedition. 7
After being transported to Orario with Xin Mu, Zhang accepted Flora’s offer to join her Familia and become an adventurer. Flora’s previous Familia members had died attempting to level up, leaving her group with the reputation of a cursed Familia. Zhang accepted the risk without believing that death was inevitable. 3 11
Appearance
Zhang is a black-haired young man with an intentionally unremarkable presentation. He considers himself only moderately handsome and commonly lets his hair grow messy; after arriving in Orario, he also develops visible stubble. 15 40
- Black hair, often left long and untidy. 38 40
- Two knife scars on his back and one on his abdomen. 14
- Frequently wears arm guards or bracers in combat. 9 13
- Initially wore worn, tattered clothing after arriving in Orario. 10 11
Personality
Zhang is observant, calm under immediate pressure, and highly skilled at reading hostility in others. His history of bullying made him sensitive to hostile intent and facial expressions. He generally prioritizes practical safety over emotional reactions, particularly when protecting Xin Mu or managing the risks of their otherworlder status. 6 17
He is considerate toward people he trusts but guarded about his past. Xin Mu describes him as exceptionally kind to those who treat him well, while becoming dangerous and retaliatory toward anyone who harms what he values. 13 14
Zhang’s restraint around women earned him the nickname “Monk.” He is easily flustered by sexual teasing and initially avoids intimate contact. This self-control becomes more difficult after gaining Boiling Dragon Blood, whose hidden effects reduce his resistance to women’s charms. 13 14 21 22
He is aware that intense guilt, rage, or sorrow can push him into a berserk state. In that state, he may lose his sense of self and perceive everyone as an enemy. 26
Abilities & Skills
Knowledge of the Otherworld Adventurer
A unique skill shared with Xin Mu because of their origin from another world. It substantially improves ability growth and the likelihood of developing new skills.
- Provides a correction that increases the magnitude of ability growth. 13
- Increases the probability of discovering skills. 13
- Has specialized effects in Strength and Endurance for Zhang. 13
- Allows even basic training—such as sprinting, dodging, running, and push-ups—to produce measurable growth. 16
- Makes mana growth difficult because Zhang cannot understand magical structure. 13
- Reduces his likelihood of discovering magic; his Magic stat remained at 0 through the recorded updates. 13 16 37
Boiling Dragon Blood
A skill awakened after Zhang survived drinking an undiluted high-grade Dragon Blood potion. It grants regenerative effects at considerable physical and psychological cost. 20 21
- Repairs non-fatal injuries, demonstrated when a spider bite on his hand healed rapidly. 21 24
- Doubles the pain from wounds. 21
- Consumes vast amounts of stamina. 21
- Contributed to severe muscle strain and magic exhaustion after extensive use. 22 35
- Has an unwanted effect related to the opposite sex, sharply reducing his former resistance to women’s charms. 21 22
Hand-to-Hand Combat
Zhang entered Orario with combat experience and a strong understanding of his own body mechanics.
- Uses punches, kicks, grappling, and brute-force throws against Dungeon monsters. 9 26
- Crushed Weak Mushrooms bare-handed on the first floor. 7
- Fought a Great Barking Dog at close range, using his bracer to strike its nose and pinning it down with a kick before Xin Mu delivered the finishing blow. 9
- Learned that grabbing and crushing Earth Bees was more effective than ordinary strikes. 26
- Can adapt his force output to avoid injuring himself when using his enhanced strength. 13
Combat Instruction
Zhang becomes Xin Mu’s combat instructor, emphasizing survival and adaptability rather than controlled sparring.
- Trains her reaction speed by launching surprise attacks. 43
- Teaches close-combat movement, including prioritizing speed over force. 43
- Encourages kiting tactics: retreating while using thrown weapons to maintain distance. 43
- Pushes Xin Mu’s pain tolerance and endurance, though he is reluctant to hurt her. 43
Situational Awareness
Zhang’s past experiences give him strong instincts for danger and hostile intent.
- Detected that someone had watched him with hostility shortly after arriving in Orario. 6
- Instinctively took a guarded stance in Kolenmar’s presence, which the Level 6 adventurer immediately noticed. 23
- Easily evaded two pursuing Level 1 adventurers after assessing their speed and strength. 49
Equipment
- Cortanast’s red gauntlet / arm guard — Given by Flora for protection before Zhang’s first Dungeon expedition. 6
- Red bracers — Crafted with Folded Steel, a technique associated with Level 4 or higher smiths; estimated to be worth approximately 4 million Faris. Their red coloration is unusual, and they possess self-repairing properties attributed to Blue Silver. 45
- Cowhide chest pieces and hard cowhide bracers — Purchased from Kalisejiang for 2,000 Faris. 39
- Custom weapon — Commissioned from Kalisejiang, with Zhang discussing its weight, quality, and further modifications. 44
- Refined Iron Daggers — Eight daggers selected as equipment for Zhang and Xin Mu. 39
Relationships
- Xin Mu — Fellow otherworlder, closest companion, Dungeon partner, and trainee. Zhang consistently prioritizes her safety, while Xin Mu is openly attached to him and seeks comfort from him during moments of fear. 3 17 41 49
- Flora / Fura — His goddess and the head of his Familia. She granted him a Divine Blessing, teases him frequently, and is proud of his unusual growth. 3 13 23
- Perman — Level 4 potion maker who treated Zhang’s internal injuries and supplied the Dragon Blood that led to Boiling Dragon Blood. Their relationship includes trade, suspicion, and mutual practical trust. 11 20 21
- Kalisejiang (“Jiang”) — Craftsman and former source of repeated trouble for Zhang. Although their interactions are argumentative, Zhang purchases equipment from him and commissions custom work. 38 39 44
- Kolenmar — Level 6 Zeus Familia adventurer known as the Wind-Chasing Leg. Zhang was overwhelmed by the pressure of Kolenmar’s presence and recognized the enormous gap between them. 23
- Heluo — Guild receptionist who is initially cold toward Zhang and Xin Mu but shows concern for inexperienced adventurers. 6 10
