Background / History

The Sharingan is the Uchiha clan’s defining bloodline ability. Its awakening grants combatants exceptional dynamic vision and greatly strengthens genjutsu, making an Uchiha with awakened eyes fundamentally more dangerous than one without them. It does not, however, directly improve the user’s physique or movement speed. 3 4 40

Ordinarily, the Sharingan’s growth is tied to intense spiritual stimulation. Most Uchiha cannot advance beyond Three-Tomoe, while awakening the Mangekyō requires both extreme emotional change and rare aptitude. 2 108 Suifeng’s Zanpakutō, Red Ghost, bypasses much of this limitation: if he possesses sufficient chakra, it can promote his Sharingan from Two-Tomoe through Mangekyō. This exception cannot naturally produce Eternal Mangekyō, which requires additional ocular power. 2 81

Later revelations connect the Sharingan to the Rinne Sharingan and the God Tree. Suifeng concludes that the Sharingan is a divided inheritance of the Nine-Tomoe Rinne Sharingan, while Tenji claims that an alien contaminating force mutated the Rinnegan’s power into the Sharingan within the Uchiha bloodline. 129 130 178

Appearance

The basic Sharingan turns the iris scarlet and develops one to three black tomoe. Higher forms reshape the tomoe into unique Mangekyō patterns, with each pair producing different powers. 124 127
