He turned his head and saw Mary standing at the edge of the construction site, carrying a basket in her hand.
The basket was covered with a white cloth, one corner lifted by the wind to reveal sandwiches and roast meat inside.
Mary wore a light blue coat. Her hair was a little whiter than the last time he had seen her, but she looked well. Standing in the sunset, she smiled warmly at her two sons.
Dean smiled, smiling like a child.
Sam also poked his head out from behind a pile of rebar. The moment he saw his mother, a smile appeared on his stern face.
The two of them practically ran over at the same time, like children coming home from school.
Mary set the basket on a flat stone and lifted the cloth. Inside were more than a dozen neatly arranged sandwiches and two large, thick pieces of roast goose. The homemade bread was filled with ham, lettuce, eggs, and a thin layer of butter. The smell alone made their mouths water.
"Mommy, what are you doing here?" Dean grabbed a sandwich and took a huge bite, his cheeks puffed up like a squirrel's as he spoke indistinctly.
Mary sat down and handed another sandwich to Sam.
"John's resting at home. I had nothing to do anyway, and I heard you were almost done here. I figured you definitely hadn't been eating properly, so I made some food and brought it over."
Sam took the sandwich. He was not as impatient as Dean, but he still bit off half of it in one mouthful.
As he chewed and swallowed, he mumbled, "Thanks, Mommy." His eyes were a little red, though not noticeably so.
Mary watched them wolf down the food, her eyes full of motherly love.
