Jeff's tone was full of disbelief. He even wondered if he had misheard, so he emphasized it again. "You mean my brain matter was eaten by a dog, right? I didn't hear that wrong, did I?"
"I don't think there's any need to dig into that!" Ron hesitated.
"No, I think I very much need to find out whose brain matter was eaten by a dog!"
A powerful and deeply unpleasant premonition rose within him.
"Yours!" Ron ladled out a bowl of soup and placed it in front of Jeff. "See for yourself. But it's fine. It's all in the past now. Things will get better from here on out, kid!"
A ghost-faced bubble rising from the soup was scooped precisely into the bowl.
Jeff watched the bowl set before him as the ghost-faced bubble burst, forming a clear image.
He saw his brain matter get blown out and splatter everywhere. Then, after being startled, a mongrel with yellow-and-black fur hesitantly crept over, sniffed around, and began licking up his brain matter.
