Background

Sangji was the master of Unborn Temple's White Bone Path in Western Tuo Prefecture. Before his defeat, he pursued Fang Qing as a “heretic” responsible for Wondrous Fire's death, dispatching Wondrous Water, Wondrous Wind, and Wondrous Goodness against him. His inability to subdue Fang Qing also prevented him from completing his destined count and attempting the Dharma King breakthrough. 120 125

Fang Qing defeated Sangji using the Sea Transformation Pearl, then forcibly converted him through the Great Sun Empowerment Secret Technique. Sangji resisted because conversion would bind him as a servant across lifetimes, but his spiritual platform was ultimately breached. Afterward, he agreed to conceal Fang Qing's identity and help him integrate into the Secret Treasury Domain. 125 126

Sangji publicly installed Fang Qing, under the name Fang Shui, as head of the Five Bright Ones and entrusted him with White Bone Path affairs during his own seclusion. Before his conversion, Sangji was a hardline Secret Treasury monk who viewed outsiders as heretics and considered advancement to Dharma King essential to his authority over Ancient Shu's Buddhist affairs.
