Ch. 102Birthday Banquet (In Honor of Alliance Leader Ten-Mile Song)

  • Green Dragonfly secretly examines Fang Qing and concludes that he is connected to the Secret Treasury Domain and likely owes his Dao-foundation breakthrough to the Great Sun Esoteric Sect. She decides not to investigate him further, believing he may eventually become a monk.
  • Suspecting that the demons have a larger plan for Pu Shanjun’s four-hundredth birthday, Fang Qing retreats to Jade Island and sends Xu Hei to attend the banquet as his observer.
  • Pu Family Mountain City hosts an extravagant celebration. Powerful Dao-foundation guests enter through the main gate with valuable gifts, while lesser cultivators are relegated to the side entrance. The declining Zhao Family is publicly denied the honor of entering through the main gate.
  • Xu Hei is insulted by the Pu Family gatekeeper and seated far from the main table, but he accepts the humiliation and focuses on eating.
  • At the banquet, disguised demon Li Rulong recognizes Pu Lingzhu, the daughter of a woman he and his sworn brothers once helped. As Pu Shanjun receives his guests, Li Rulong grows alarmed that no Purple Mansion cultivators seem to be present.
  • Outside the city, the Purple Mansion formation is activated at full power, hinting that the celebration is a trap or the prelude to a major event.

Character developments and interactions

  • Fang Qing shows confidence and sharp bargaining instincts, acquiring a useful concealment artifact and technique. Though wary of the demons, he chooses to observe their plans indirectly rather than flee entirely.
  • Green Dragonfly is perceptive and calculating. She recognizes Fang Qing’s unusual ties but treats him as a potential future ally rather than a threat.
  • Xu Hei remains timid and resentful of danger, yet follows Fang Qing’s orders. His low status at the banquet contrasts with the privileged treatment of powerful lineages.
  • Li Rulong is burdened by his forced involvement in the demon plot and haunted by memories of his sworn brothers. His growing unease makes him the first to suspect something is wrong.

  • Concealment and suspicion: Fang Qing’s new artifact, Li Rulong’s disguise, and the hidden purpose of the banquet all emphasize secrecy.
  • Uneasy alliances and entrapment: Fang Qing and Green Dragonfly leave open the possibility of cooperation, while Li Rulong feels caught between opposing forces.
  • Foreshadowing: The absence of Purple Mansion guests and the fully activated city formation suggest that the birthday celebration conceals imminent danger.

Ch. 103Light Concealment (In Honor of Alliance Leader UTS)

Key plot points and events

  • The Pu Family’s grand formation traps the guests inside a staged day-to-night spectacle during Pu Shanjun’s birthday feast.
  • Pu Shanjun privately reveals to Li Rulong that he had long guided his choices: he allowed Li to test the Demon Clan’s Intercalary Method, arranged his rescue, and even eliminated the Skywater Luo Family to conceal the plan. Li realizes his supposed act of self-determination was manipulated.
  • Pu Shanjun announces his lifelong grievances: he never saw a True Lord, failed to advance beyond early Purple Abode, and believes Demon Cloud Cliff crippled his cultivation with Ashen Calamity Fire. He then kills the Dao Foundation cultivators gathered around the main table and begins sacrificing the other guests to power the Intercalary Method.
  • The ritual uses Pu Lingzhu as a vessel. Pu Shanjun transforms the Ashen Calamity Fire into Profound Yin Silver Fire, gains a second divine ability—Light Concealment—and reaches middle Purple Abode.
  • Demon Cloud Cliff’s forces confront him, accusing him of betraying them and arranging the death of a Purple Abode cultivator in Yanbo Blessed Land. Pu Shanjun confirms his treachery and joins the Demon Kings in an assault intended to cripple Ancient Shu.
  • Xu Hei escapes through a dog hole, where he encounters an old fox. The fox later helps him flee with Green Dragonfly, partly out of concern that Xu’s powerful Dao Foundation connections might retaliate.
  • Green Dragonfly concludes that the coming conflict could weaken Demon Cloud Cliff, creating an opening for secret monks and Demon Clan forces to expand.

Character developments

  • Li Rulong loses his belief that his choice of the Intercalary Method was entirely his own. Though shaken and disillusioned, he steadies himself by setting aside fear of death. He also gains insight into the Bi Moon art by interpreting its connection to metal and fire.
  • Pu Shanjun emerges as a calculating traitor driven by resentment and ambition. He sacrifices his own clan and guests, transforms through demonic power, and achieves a major cultivation breakthrough.
  • Pu Lingzhu is turned into a living vessel for the ritual, her body becoming a wax-like form that enables Pu Shanjun’s transformation.
  • Xu Hei proves alert and resourceful, escaping the massacre through his small size and quick instincts.
  • Green Dragonfly takes a strategic view of the upheaval, while Dark Candle, the old fox, reveals that his rescue of Xu was motivated by both a prior connection and self-preservation.

Ch. 108The Mantis Stalks the Cicada, Unaware of the Oriole Behind

Chapter Summary

At the mountaintop Void-Walking Hall, Senior Brother Ruan and his fellow Azure Sea Sect cultivators finally locate the remains of the Azure Sea Patriarch. However, they are ambushed by a powerful demonic-path disciple who is secretly only a pseudo-Foundation Establishment cultivator. The attack kills several disciples, including Ruan’s Dao companion, and leaves Senior Brother Ruan fighting desperately with the sect’s talisman treasure, the Sea-Quelling Ring.
The demonic cultivator uses the terrifying Spirit-Devouring Demonic Flame to overcome Ruan’s defenses and burn him to ashes. Believing himself victorious, he takes the Sea-Quelling Ring and enters the hall to search for the Patriarch’s treasures. He does not realize that Junior Brother Linghu has been hiding inside with the Sky-Veiling Curtain, which conceals him even from powerful divine sense.
Linghu uses the genuine Tide-Born Pearl, an inheritance treasure of the Azure Sea Patriarch, to temporarily gain Foundation Establishment-level strength. He ambushes the demonic cultivator with a massive hammer and a hidden talisman treasure, killing him. Linghu then mourns his fallen companions.
However, Linghu is immediately ambushed in turn by Xiang Dahu, who has disguised himself as the demonic cultivator’s ally. Xiang Dahu attacks Linghu’s Sea of Consciousness with a Demon-Subduing Vajra Pestle, knocks him unconscious, seals his cultivation, and loots him. Under Fang Qing’s direction through the livestream, Xiang Dahu takes the Tide-Born Pearl, two powerful magical treasures, three talisman treasures, and an iron scroll labeled the Celestial Cycle Star Map. The map appears to depict the secret realm, marking the Void-Walking Hall and the main peak, but its restrictions are too strong for them to investigate further. Since Xiang Dahu’s earth-attributed cultivation makes him incompatible with the water-based Tide-Born Pearl, he intends to give it to the Young Master.
When Linghu later awakens, he assumes that the demonic cultivator must have fled or been defeated by some unknown senior. He soon discovers that the Tide-Born Pearl and all the treasures in his storage pouch are gone, leaving him devastated and confused.
The chapter then shifts to Heavenly Heart Island, where the one-month period inside the ruins has ended. Qin Ruxue and another demonic-path formation master open the exit restriction. The returning cultivators are severely injured and are immediately searched by demonic-path forces and a treasure-seeking spirit rat. More than forty cultivators emerge, many missing limbs, demonstrating the ruin’s extremely high casualty rate. Qin Ruxue notices that Miao Yifan and Bei Lingshu have returned, while Li Tianlong and Shu Rou remain missing.
Eventually, Xiang Dahu emerges disguised as an ordinary eighth-layer Qi Refining Azure Sea Sect disciple. He submits a deliberately modest storage pouch containing several magical artifacts, ores, and spirit herbs. Ruan Zhixuan and the treasure-seeking rat find nothing suspicious, so he is allowed to leave and rest. His low cultivation and apparent lack of injuries make it seem that he merely searched the outskirts before hiding until the deadline.

Character Developments and Interactions

  • Senior Brother Ruan is driven by grief and rage after his Dao companion and junior brothers are killed. Despite using a sect-provided talisman treasure, he is ultimately overwhelmed by the demonic cultivator’s superior strength.
  • Junior Brother Linghu demonstrates courage and tactical patience by hiding, refining the Tide-Born Pearl, and launching a successful counterattack. His victory is immediately undermined when Xiang Dahu deceives and robs him.
  • The demonic cultivator appears arrogant and confident after defeating Ruan, but his greed and failure to detect Linghu lead to his death.
  • Xiang Dahu is revealed as the chapter’s true opportunist. He allows Linghu to eliminate the demonic cultivator, then ambushes Linghu and quietly claims the greatest rewards while maintaining his disguise.
  • Fang Qing observes the events through the livestream and directs Xiang Dahu to withdraw after securing enough treasures.
  • Qin Ruxue watches the survivors return and becomes increasingly aware of the ruin’s danger and the strict inspections imposed by the demonic forces.
  • Ruan Zhixuan accepts Xiang Dahu’s false identity without suspicion, demonstrating how effectively his disguise and cover story work.

Significant Themes

  • The danger of greed and overconfidence: The demonic cultivator wins a major battle but is undone by entering the hall carelessly and failing to anticipate another hidden enemy.
  • The “mantis and oriole” strategy: The title reflects the sequence of predators—Ruan’s group is attacked by the demonic cultivator, the demonic cultivator is killed by Linghu, and Linghu is then robbed by Xiang Dahu.
  • Deception and concealed strength: Hidden treasures, disguised identities, concealed auras, and false storage contents determine who survives and who gains the rewards.
  • Survival over honor: Xiang Dahu does not pursue open confrontation. He relies on timing, disguise, and opportunism, while most other cultivators suffer catastrophic injuries.
  • The harshness of cultivation-world competition: Even after surviving the ruins, cultivators face inspection, theft, factional suspicion, and political danger at the exit.
  • Inheritance and compatibility: The Tide-Born Pearl represents the Azure Sea Patriarch’s extraordinary legacy, but its power can only be properly used by someone suited to its water-based cultivation.
