Background / History

When Frieza and King Cold arrive on Earth, Vegeta immediately recognizes the hopeless gap in strength. He warns the others that fleeing will not save them and admits he has no idea what to do after Li Lin effortlessly resolves the crisis. The sight of Li Lin killing Frieza, followed by Trunks arriving with the confidence to confront Frieza himself, deeply wounds Vegeta’s pride. 2 6 7

Vegeta becomes consumed by the fact that Goku and Trunks can transform into Super Saiyans while he cannot. He leaves to train alone, determined to gain the transformation and prove himself against Li Lin. 9 10

Personality

Vegeta is intensely proud, competitive, and unwilling to accept being surpassed. Insults to his strength or Saiyan status repeatedly provoke immediate anger, particularly when others compare him unfavorably to Goku, Li Lin, Piccolo, or Trunks. 9 12 13 28

His pride also makes him reject assistance, even when it would be tactically sensible. He refuses Li Lin’s help against Dr. Gero, rushes into battles with the Androids, and insists on facing Cell alone. 21 24 43

Despite his arrogance, Vegeta possesses exceptional drive. Defeat consistently pushes him toward harsher training rather than surrender; after being surpassed by Piccolo and defeated by the Androids, he vows to exceed the Super Saiyan realm and enters the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with Trunks. 26 28 30 39

Vegeta is one of Earth’s defenders confronting Frieza and King Cold. He is visibly terrified by the threat and distrusts the possibility that Li Lin can defeat Frieza—until Li Lin does so effortlessly. 2 4 6

Li Lin Rivalry and First Defeat

Unable to tolerate Li Lin’s dismissal, Vegeta challenges him before becoming a Super Saiyan. Li Lin defeats him within moments, knocking him unconscious while deliberately restraining his own power. 12 13

Android Conflict

After becoming a Super Saiyan, Vegeta arrives eager to defeat the Androids and challenge Li Lin again. His impatience allows Dr. Gero to absorb his attacks, and his confidence is later shattered when Android 18 defeats him. 20 21 24

Training with Trunks

Surpassed by Piccolo and humiliated by the Androids, Vegeta vows to go beyond Super Saiyan. He agrees to train with Trunks in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, emerging vastly stronger. 26 28 30 39

Cell Conflict

As Super Vegeta, he initially dominates Cell and calls himself “Super Vegeta.” Cell manipulates him into allowing further evolution, however, and reaches Perfect Form through repeated near-death recoveries inflicted by Vegeta. 40 41 45 46 47

Vegeta refuses to regret enabling Cell’s evolution and attempts to defeat Perfect Cell with the Super Final Flash. The attack fails to finish Cell, and Vegeta is left severely injured before Trunks intervenes. 48
