Background / History

Trunks arrives from the future in a Time Machine intending to destroy Frieza. He is immediately thrown off by the altered timeline: Frieza has already been killed by Li Lin, an individual absent from Trunks' knowledge of history. After confirming Son Goku's identity through a brief Super Saiyan spar, Trunks privately warns Goku of the future Android crisis. He later thanks Li Lin on behalf of the humans of the future and returns to his own time. 7 9

He returns during the Android conflict and identifies Dr. Gero as an Android not matching the two enemies from his future. The timeline continues to diverge when Android 16 appears alongside Androids 17 and 18, neither of whom Trunks knew from his history. He urges caution against Vegeta's reckless actions and attempts to eliminate the Androids before further threats can emerge. 21 23

The discovery of a second Time Machine deeply unsettles Trunks. Its flight log shows that it arrived four years before his own machine; he concludes that history has changed beyond recognition. Although resolving this timeline will not save his future directly, he remains committed to honoring Future Bulma's wishes by fighting here. 27

To gain the strength needed for his own devastated era, Trunks chooses to train with Vegeta despite their strained relationship. Vegeta initially treats him as an obstacle, but the two enter the Hyperbolic Time Chamber together and emerge significantly stronger. 28 30 39

During Cell's evolution, Trunks repeatedly tries to end the threat before it can worsen. Vegeta prevents him from finishing Cell and later suffers defeat after Cell reaches his evolved form. Trunks intervenes with his muscle-expanded transformation and initially dominates through raw strength, but Cell reveals the form's loss of speed and defeats him. After Cell spares both Saiyans and announces a tournament, Trunks blames himself for failing and resolves to continue training with Vegeta. 42 48 50

He is protective of both Earth and Vegeta despite their difficult father-son relationship. He repeatedly attempts to keep Vegeta from acting alone, intervenes when Cell is about to kill him, and later chooses to train at Vegeta's side rather than abandon him. 23 28 48 50

Trunks is also self-critical. After learning that his strongest transformation is flawed, he loses confidence briefly, then regains hope by remembering Li Lin and recommits himself to becoming stronger. 49 50
