Background / History

Goten begins as a transmigrator who awakens in the body of Son Goten on Paozu Mountain. Retaining memories of Dragon Ball, he considers the approaching Majin Buu crisis an immediate threat and devotes himself to reaching Super Saiyan 2 before the World Martial Arts Tournament. Unlike the original Goten, he still has a Saiyan tail. 1

He trains alone to strengthen his Super Saiyan foundation, using his knowledge of earlier Saiyan transformations as a guide. He also trains with Son Gohan, whose initial surprise at Goten’s Super Saiyan transformation quickly turns into recognition of his younger brother’s exceptional strength. 1 3 4

During the battle with Broly, Goten reaches Super Saiyan 2 but struggles with the stamina limits of his seven-year-old body. He and Gohan ultimately destroy Broly through a combined Kamehameha. 7

After losing control as a Golden Great Ape, Goten enters a mental realm and relives the memories of Sun Xiaotian, including Xia Yutong’s death from leukemia. He meets the original Son Goten there; the two fuse after the original convinces him to live for the family now depending on him. 37 38

The fusion produces a radically changed Goten: physically an adult-like youth and spiritually the “true Son Goten.” He identifies his new state as Super Saiyan 4 and takes over the battle against Majin Buu. 38 39

Before his soul fusion, Goten is a seven-year-old boy with spiky hair, an orange martial arts uniform over a black long-sleeved shirt, and a retained Saiyan tail. 1

He is observant about other people’s feelings, recognizing Gohan’s affection for Videl and choosing to train separately so as not to interfere. At the same time, he has little patience for what he sees as foolishness, especially Gohan’s Great Saiyaman persona and Mr. Satan’s public image. 1 4 8

World Martial Arts Tournament

Goten meets Son Goku for the first time, enters the Junior Division, and defeats Ikuse and the other competitors with ease. His final against Trunks reveals his Super Saiyan 2, giving him the Junior Division championship after Trunks forfeits. 8 9 10 11 12

Soul Fusion and Super Saiyan 4

In the mental realm triggered by his loss of control, Goten confronts Sun Xiaotian’s past and fuses with the original Son Goten. He returns as Super Saiyan 4, physically transformed into a tall youth and powerful enough to eclipse the fighters around him. 38 39

Battle Against Majin Buu

Super Saiyan 4 Goten humiliates Buu in direct combat, catches and redirects Buu’s planet-destroying attack, and eventually allows himself to be absorbed under a protective barrier. His true objective is to infiltrate Buu and rescue Vegeta and Fat Buu. 40 44 45

After Buu becomes Kid Buu, Goten continues to dominate him and prepares to finish him with a Kamehameha before Janemba’s arrival interrupts the battle. 46 47

Janembuu Battle and Disappearance
