Allen silently put down A History of Magic in the Last Century, unsure whether he should lament having arrived in a world at war or rejoice at the chance to learn magic.
That was right. Allen was not a native of the United Kingdom, but a Chinese man who had transmigrated into the world of Harry Potter.
Allen, male, was born in 1987 to a moderately well-off family in a fourth-tier city. He had a strong ability to learn, but because he had loved playing around since childhood, his grades had always been mediocre.
During his final year of high school, he worked desperately for a year and set the school's record for the greatest improvement in grades, leaping from beyond one hundredth place to the top thirty.
He was admitted to the mathematics department of a nationally prestigious teachers' university.
After graduating, he smoothly became a high school mathematics teacher with an iron rice bowl.
In his seventh year of teaching, relying on his natural intelligence and seven years of accumulated experience, he summarized a set of study methods that allowed the senior class he led, nicknamed the Underpants Class, to far surpass the parallel classes in the college entrance examinations and nearly match the elite class.
Allen's brilliant life came to an end on the way to buy a house.
Driving the Toyota Corolla his parents had helped him purchase during his first year of work, he hummed a tune. Even the pounding music could not express the surging excitement in his heart.
Not even the wind and snow outside could cool the burning anticipation of finally owning a home.
But while he sat safely inside his car, disaster fell from the sky.
A massive dump truck suddenly cut across from the left and ran over Allen's silver Corolla. In the midst of unbearable pain, Allen lost consciousness.
When he opened his eyes again, Allen was no longer that Allen.
Allen really should have been grateful that, when his school and bank had partnered to issue cards honoring teachers, he had followed the crowd and bought personal accident insurance, with his parents as the beneficiaries.
He really should have been grateful that he had a younger brother born of the same mother, so his parents would not be left without anyone to depend on in their old age after their grief.
He really should have been grateful that he had another chance to live!
The past had drifted away with the wind. He should focus on the present.
The student Allen had transmigrated into was also named Allen, though his name was Aaron Harris, Allen Harris.
The original Allen had been extremely naughty. He threw away his own children's Flying Broomstick and secretly rode his brother's, only to fall from a great height and lose his life. That was how his soul had fused with the current Allen's.
Allen returned home in a daze and spent some time muddleheaded afterward. Fortunately, his parents in this life assumed he was simply embarrassed by his head injury and did not pay much attention to his unusual behavior.
After all, they had so many things to do and so many children to look after...
"Allen, come downstairs and eat!" a gentle female voice called.
Allen put down his book, concealed the shock in his heart, and encouraged himself.
"Come on. Most teachers are good at acting, even if their usual audience is students." Having fused with the original body's soul, he had obtained little Allen's complete memories and emotions, so he was still confident he could hide it successfully.
As the stairs creaked and shook beneath his steps, the voice sounded again. "Allen, go wash your hands. Your dad should be back soon."
Allen's dad, Owen Harris, worked in the Ministry of Magic's Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. The department was divided into three offices: the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad, Obliviator Headquarters, and the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee. Owen had always wanted to join Obliviator Headquarters, believing himself particularly skilled at Memory Charms.
But in reality, he worked for the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee. He did not think his gift for persuasion was enough to convince Muggles to accept all manner of unbelievable magical accidents, such as Sirius Black's destruction of an entire street eight years ago.
Over time, Owen's Memory Charms had become ever more masterful, but having to write a report after every spell to explain himself to Obliviator Headquarters gave him a terrible headache.
"I'm back. This weather is simply dreadful. We had to explain to an elderly Muggle woman in the blizzard why the teapot she had just bought suddenly started jumping up and tap dancing while boiling water, splashing hot water everywhere. Oh... thank you, Daisy."
Owen accepted the large brush Daisy, his eldest daughter, handed him and brushed the snow from his body.
"I need to speak with Arthur again. I think he should be able to take over this matter. He must want to catch Mundungus even more than I do. A wizard reported seeing him on the street where it happened."
"Owen, have some hot tea."
Mrs. Harris directed her wand, and a steaming cup of black tea landed precisely on the dining table at her command.
As a staff member at St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, Mrs. Harris was clearly quite skilled at magic, even though she only worked in the waiting room.
"Mom, there was no need to use Sonorus just to call Allen downstairs for dinner!"
Her second son, Lenn Harris, tapped the table with the parchment in his hand in dissatisfaction.
Lenn was currently in his sixth year at Hogwarts and preparing for his seventh-year N.E.W.T.s.
"Oh, sorry, dear. It's a habit from the hospital. Whenever I call someone, I unconsciously use magic."
The Fat Witch shook her golden hair and spoke gently to the son she was most satisfied with.
"Allen, wash your hands first!" Turning around, Mrs. Harris spotted Allen, who had already seated himself at the table.
Daring not to argue, Allen immediately ran to the sink and turned on the tap.
Suddenly, a piercing voice rang beside his ears. "Sloppy, sloppy!"
Allen abruptly looked up and discovered that the mirror on the wall was screaming.
As Allen desperately smoothed out the wrinkles in his clothes, he thought dazedly, Perhaps magic mirrors are standard equipment in ordinary magical households!
When he returned to his seat, all seven members of the family were already seated, which was uncommon at this table.
"Thanks to Christmas, our whole family can be together today. That is truly worth celebrating!" Mr. Harris raised his glass and said kindly.
The eldest son, Albert, also raised his glass and clinked it with his dad's. He was the only younger family member allowed to drink alcohol.
Albert currently worked in the Ministry of Magic's Auror Headquarters. He had a steady personality and was extremely dependable.
Lenn, the second son, solemnly took a sip of sea buckthorn juice as if he were tasting the finest red wine.
Daisy smiled as she watched her little sister Emily, who was greedily staring at the plump roast chicken on the table.
"What a loving family."
Allen was delighted to be living with such a family.
He ranked fourth in the family. Unlike his elder brother and sister, he was not highly valued; unlike his little sister Emily, he was not doted on by the entire family; and he was different from his second brother, who was always overly serious and eager to prove his importance.
Allen was usually very low-key. He was neither naughty nor notably clever, merely ordinary, and a very good listener.
That was probably an important reason why Allen's armor vest had remained secure until now.
"Tomorrow, we're going to Diagon Alley to replenish some household supplies," Mrs. Harris said.
Lenn immediately stopped using his knife and fork. "Mom, I need a new Cauldron, as well as some Potions."
"Lenn, your Cauldron actually exploded?" Mrs. Harris looked at her usually outstanding second son in disbelief.
Lenn pursed his lips and said nothing.
"Mom, Lenn was secretly brewing seventh-year Potions, and his Cauldron exploded. Professor Snape scolded him for it." Daisy could not resist tattling to her mother. Lenn's brows knit tightly.
"I'm finished eating!" Allen interrupted his mother's impending roar.
"Allen, please don't leave yet. Today is a day for reunion, and it was not easy for us to gather together. Why don't we talk about something happy? For example, what are your New Year wishes?" Mr. Harris hurriedly tried to smooth things over.
Daisy looked at her father with interest.
Mrs. Harris raised her eyebrows as she cut up sausage for her youngest daughter.
Little Emily had stuffed her mouth full of sausage and was eating with great delight, completely unaware of the minor commotion.
"I hope that in the new year, I can pass the Auror examination." Albert was the first to answer his dad's call.
"I hope I can have a respectable robe before I start working." Daisy was unwilling to fall behind.
"I hope I can have a doll that can talk, sing, and sleep." Emily spoke next.
"Dear, your wishes will come true. Lenn, what about you?" Mr. Harris asked gently.
"Without a doubt, he wants to pass his N.E.W.T.s with Outstanding marks in every subject." Daisy spoke first.
"No. My wish is to enter the Ministry of Magic after passing my N.E.W.T.s with Outstanding marks in every subject," Lenn rebutted his sister.
"Then what about you, Allen?" Dad looked toward Allen.
"His wish is probably that when he rides a broom in Flying Class, he can fly high enough that his head stops scraping against the ground!" Lenn could not resist teasing his younger brother.
"No, Allen, Mom hopes you can stay safe and sound." Mrs. Harris hurriedly comforted him.
"I know, Mom. I hope everyone can stay safe and sound, and that everything goes well."
Allen's heart felt warm. He realized Allen had not been ignored; he had merely always been too well-behaved.
After dinner, Allen lay in bed and thought hazily: Let the future Dark Lord do whatever he wants. Isn't there still the Savior? I need to improve my strength and protect my family during the turmoil to come.
With anticipation for tomorrow's trip to Diagon Alley, Allen drifted into sleep.
