Background / History
Hogwarts was founded by Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Helga Hufflepuff as a castle school intended to replace the limited apprenticeship model by gathering magically talented youths for formal training. The founders disagreed over admissions: Slytherin favored restricting entry to pure-blood families, while Gryffindor supported admitting any child with magical talent; Ravenclaw prioritized intelligence and wisdom. 611
Rowena Ravenclaw selected a cliffside site beside a lake after dreaming of a warthog leading her there. She named the school “Hogwarts,” having written “warthog” backward. 606 611 The castle later became associated with the Black Lake, the Forbidden Forest, Hogsmeade, four Houses, and traditions such as first-years crossing the lake by boat. 23 606 1094
The founders established the Book of Admittance and Quill of Acceptance as Hogwarts’ sole admissions mechanism. Stored in a locked tower untouched by others since the school’s founding, the artifacts continue to determine entry to Hogwarts itself. 1067

| Hogwarts University | An advanced-study institution with rune-resistant facilities, dueling grounds, arcane greenhouses, scholarships, and paid study for most students. 962 1079 |
| Ravenclaw Square | A vast commercial plaza containing shops, stalls, and the Ravenclaw Temple. 1091 1101 |

Governance and Sentience
Hogwarts possesses a connection to its headmaster and senior staff. Allen Harris severed Albus Dumbledore’s connection to the school upon dismissing him, then temporarily cut the other professors’ connections before restoring their positions individually. 943
During the conflict with the governors, Hogwarts refused the Pureblood governors entry and animated its stone defenses without the usual Piertotum Locomotor incantation. 944 The school’s represented will—called “the lady” by Dumbledore—supported Allen’s reforms rather than Dumbledore’s leadership. 944
Lady Ravenclaw publicly judged Dumbledore’s tenure by Hogwarts’ educational purpose, questioning why graduate spellcasting and combat ability had declined under his administration. Godric Gryffindor likewise condemned the restriction of advanced knowledge and transferred his share of Hogwarts’ ownership to Allen. 947
Admissions
- The Book of Admittance and Quill of Acceptance remain the only means of selecting Hogwarts students. 1067
- Hogwarts’ traditional admission age remains approximately eleven, even after the creation of the separate Elementary School Division. 1067
- Allen barred certain Pureblood families from admission following the struggle for control of the school. 952 1067
Defenses and Access Control
- Hogwarts can deny entry to unwanted governors and deploy stone warriors against intruders. 944
- The expanded city is protected by a Bastion-style defensive perimeter with trenches, fortified walls, and rune-inscribed metal armor. 1093
- Anti-Apparition restrictions are not permanently imposed across the entire expanded area, allowing regular transport and commerce outside special periods. 1093
- Allen claimed to possess a solution preventing Muggle electronic devices from detecting the expanded Hogwarts grounds. 1101
Education
Houses and School Tradition
Hogwarts retains its four Houses—Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff—and continues to sort first-years through the traditional Sorting Ceremony. 23
New students still cross the Black Lake in groups of four before entering the castle, preserving a tradition associated with the founders’ arrival at the site. 1094
Curriculum Reforms
Allen introduced Ancient Magic and combat-focused instruction to reverse what he described as the harmful effects of earlier educational methods and restore lost magical knowledge. 550
Later reforms divided Ancient Magic into Ancient Magic and Practical Magic, with Penelope Clearwater appointed Practical Magic professor. History of Magic was removed from the curriculum. 1097
- Students are encouraged to practice magic in corridors and may resolve disputes through witnessed duels. 1150
- Animagus transformation becomes commonplace among students following the reforms. 1150
- End-of-term results improve under the reformed educational system. 1512
Expanded Educational System
| Division | Purpose and structure |
|---|---|
| Wizarding Elementary School | Provides literacy, mathematics, and common magical knowledge for children aged three and older. It is non-boarding, does not require wands, and uses unified textbooks. 962 1067 |
| Hogwarts School | Continues traditional magical education for students admitted through the Book of Admittance and Quill of Acceptance. 1067 |
| Hogwarts University | Provides advanced magical research and specialized study. Scholarships support exceptional students, while most other students pay tuition. 962 |
