Background

Hiruzen served alongside Shimura Danzō, Mitokado Homura, and Utatane Koharu in the Second Hokage's elite guard before succeeding Senju Tobirama as the Third Hokage. He became Hokage in his twenties and remained in Konoha thereafter, allowing him to reach an age uncommon among active shinobi. 5 156

Personality

Hiruzen is conciliatory, patient, and deeply concerned with Konoha's stability. At the Capital City standoff, he recognizes that a clash between the Anbu and Military Police could leave Konoha vulnerable to outside invasion, so he attempts to prevent open conflict. 217 218

His desire to preserve peace often conflicts with his political caution. Hiruzen initially recognizes Uchiha Nara as a shinobi with the Will of Fire while warning that the Uchiha must not be allowed to grow unchecked. 5 When Uchiha shinobi begin disappearing, he acknowledges the severity of the matter, summons Danzō, and orders the release of captives used in Root's forbidden Wood Release experiments. 21 23

Preparing Konoha for War

As conflict among the great nations intensifies, Hiruzen directs Konoha's defensive preparations, including the deployment of one thousand shinobi to counter Kirigakure and an order for accelerated Ninja Academy graduations. 103 He also assigns dangerous missions to Orochimaru and places him within Root to gather intelligence on Danzō's organization. 96 157
