Background / History
Connection to Polysia and Styxia
Castorice initially remembers nothing of Styxia; her memories begin in Aedilia. While exploring the ruined city with Yan Huan, she encounters souls who blame her and another figure for trapping them between life and death. She recognizes herself as one of the people they are cursing 1379.
A memory of Styxia’s queen recounts the disaster caused by the dragon Polyxena, which barred the dead from the Underworld. The queen identifies an infant born inside the dragon as the sole survivor she could save, possessing a talent for [Death] from birth 1380.
Polysia later explains their connection through the story of twins with a single heart, prophesied to succeed the God of [Death]. Their reunion reveals the origin of Castorice’s Grey Hand curse and Polysia’s responsibility for it. Castorice states that her purpose is to reforge Amphoreus’s order of life and death 1385.
Companionship and the Search for Death
Castorice accompanies Yan Huan through the Tree Court and explains its welcoming customs and friendly relationship with Okhema. She cannot perceive one of the projections visible to Yan Huan and Mimi, concluding that it requires a relevant ability 1274 1277.
During the search for the Death Titan, she speaks patiently with Styxia’s lingering souls. When a dead soldier refuses to accept that the war has ended, she adopts the role of a queen-sent Battle-command Saintess to offer him a blessing 1372 1376.
Her growing circle of companions changes how she experiences life. She develops an interest in handicrafts and photography, but regrets that her photographs contain only black-and-white landscapes rather than a group portrait. Amunet’s explanation of mortality helps her reconsider death as something connected to passion and the grief of parting, rather than only hopelessness 1382 1384.
Assassination Mission in the Earlier Era
In the earlier era visited by Yan Huan, Castorice arrives alone at Ladon’s allied camp. She explicitly states that she has come to assassinate Okhema’s chancellor, not to command the battle. The Ladon elder arranges for her to enter Okhema as a supposed diplomatic gift and maidservant 1655.
Her disguise immediately falters when a hammer falls from beneath her skirt. A dagger and several fused metal tubes subsequently emerge from her clothing; she calls them construction equipment, a fruit knife, and refreshing incense tubes. She also offers inexpensive snacks bought with her limited funds 1655 1656.
Castorice then touches Yan Huan and embraces him, apparently expecting her death-associated constitution to affect him. He remains unharmed and escapes the embrace, leaving her confused. The supplied account does not explain his resistance 1656.
Defender of Okhema
By the allied assault on Okhema, Castorice is standing beside Yan Huan, Cipher, and Cyrene on the city wall. At Yan Huan’s request, she confronts the attackers alone. Thousands collapse around her, an arrow barrage disintegrates against her violet halo, and three elite Chrysos Heirs fail to overcome her tentacles 1669 1671.
Her intervention leads Ladon to accuse Aedilia of deliberately delivering a weapon to Okhema. This is his interpretation, not a proven conspiracy. Castorice herself refrains from pursuing the retreating heirs and hopes that frightening them will prevent further attacks 1670 1671.
During Yan Huan’s ten-year sleep, she fights alongside Hysilens to defend Aedilia from repeated Ladon attacks. Before leaving for the Underworld, she writes Yan Huan a love letter confessing her long-standing affection. He is bewildered, believing they had barely spoken in that cycle 1692.
Resistance and the Hidden Passage
Memories of Laigushi’s campaigns show Castorice trying to shield the wounded Aglaea from executioners. Aglaea instead attempts to secure Castorice’s escape so she can carry news to the remaining resistance. Laigushi subsequently destroys the Cloud Stone Celestial Palace, killing Aglaea and approximately 130,000 people 1704.
Castorice completes the trial of [Death] and pushes back the Underworld River to make the Styxia plan possible. While [Ocean] and [Gateway] prepare the route toward the Genesis Vortex Heart, the Demigod of [Death] is assigned to remain behind and guard it for the returning Savior 1704 1705.
When she meets Yan Huan again, Castorice appears nearly transparent, glowing faintly gold. She explains that she guarded the hidden passage between Styxia and the Vortex Core throughout his absence, and that Cyrene told her about his past. Even while asleep, she sensed warmth carried into the Underworld River by the reverse-flowing Memory Tide 1747.
Final Battle and New Life
Castorice later waits beside the original Khaslana’s remains, which she has laid to rest repeatedly across the cycles. Encouraged by Mydei and Cipher, she uses [Death] to turn the remains into flowers and grant the suffering soul a peaceful release 1782.
She joins the traveling group, gives Yan Huan an Antiling Flower, and declares her wish to move beyond the title “Maid of the Afterlife.” As a spirit, she repeatedly moves ahead of him, shielding him from chaotic energy currents and scorching winds 1783 1791.
After her physical restoration, she fights in the battle against the corrupted Titans and Black Tide. In the New World, she turns toward ordinary life: learning how to approach Earth Beasts safely, admiring Huang Di, and bringing Yan Huan a tureen of fragrant soup 1795 1797 1801 1844 1845 1855.
Appearance
Castorice is tall and lightly built, with an ethereal appearance that sharply contrasts with the armored northern warriors at Ladon’s camp 1655.
- Eyes: Amethyst pupils with a glimmer of molten gold; slightly raised outer corners resembling butterfly antennae 1655.
- Complexion: Pale skin compared to cold jade, with unusually exquisite features 1655.
- Usual gown: Twilight-like coloring, flowing hems, deep violet and muted gold patterns, and a faint violet glow across the fabric 1655.
- Butterfly motifs: Wing-like sleeve embroidery and long lashes likened to butterfly wings 1655 1656.
- Spirit form: Nearly transparent, with a faint golden radiance 1747.
- Everyday clothing: A pale, soft outfit embroidered with silver vines; loosely gathered hair held by a plain wooden hairpin 1855.
Personality
Castorice is composed, soft-spoken, and difficult to provoke. She does not react openly to the Ladon elder’s insults or to being presented as a gift. That composure is less reliable when her concealed weapons fall out: her stiffened lips, hesitant explanations, and nervousness expose her embarrassment 1655 1656.
Her concern extends beyond political allegiance. She worries that disrupting provisions could devastate the soldiers fighting at the front and believes Amphoreus’s people should stand together against the Iron Tomb. In battle, she shows restraint, leaving the defeated one-eyed heir alive and allowing his companions to retreat 1666 1671.
She is sensitive to isolation and to missed opportunities for companionship. Polysia recognizes her habit of looking away when she cannot express what is troubling her; Castorice herself treasures the everyday experiences she gains with friends. She also comforts Cipher when Cipher admits that a peaceful dream feels too good to trust 1382 1385 1635.
Her later resolve centers on personal identity rather than an imposed divine role. She chooses to resist fate, share the burden of the final struggle, and pursue a life in which her hands can safely touch other living beings 1783 1844.
Abilities & Skills
Authority of [Death]
Castorice’s power removes life force rather than merely inducing ordinary sleep. The apparent drowsiness of her victims disguises the nature of the effect 1670 1671.
- Area suppression: Soldiers initially collapse upon entering roughly ten meters of her; her domain ultimately incapacitates thousands 1669.
- Resistance to conventional defenses: Armor, determination, and ordinary combat strength do not prevent the army’s collapse 1669 1670.
- Near-passive effect: Granting death to ordinary people is described as practically passive, unlike stamina-consuming Golden Blood skills 1672.
- Touch limitation: Yan Huan is unaffected by her physical contact, despite her expectation that it would harm him 1656.
- Later control: In the New World, she can touch living beings safely 1844.
Dark Purple Tentacles
Castorice summons tentacles from the ground and directs them with minimal finger, wrist, or foot movements 1671.
- Neutralizes ice spikes and spears, making them melt and vaporize without leaving moisture 1671.
- Absorbs and disperses earth-based shockwaves and powerful punches 1671.
- Immobilizes opponents and drains both their gathered power and life force 1671.
- Leaves a powerful Chrysos Heir alive but withered and unable to fight 1671.
- Previous-cycle restriction: After inheriting the Core Flame, she was sealed in the Netherworld Flower Sea and could provide only limited tentacle support to fights above 1671.
Violet Halo
A pale violet, translucent halo spreads outward from Castorice when she sweeps her hands apart 1669.
- Turns an entire incoming arrow barrage into dust on contact 1669.
Underworld and Soul Release
Her authority also serves purposes beyond direct combat 1705 1782.
- Drives back the stagnant Underworld River in its entirety after completing the trial of [Death] 1705.
- Guards the hidden passage connecting Styxia to the Vortex Core over long years 1747.
- Transforms Khaslana’s remains into flowers, peacefully releasing the suffering soul 1782.
Everyday Skills and Interests
- Handicrafts and photography: Develops these interests through companionship, though she regrets never taking a group photograph 1382.
- Animal handling: Seeks Anaxa’s instruction on approaching Earth Beasts slowly, offering an open palm, and letting them learn her scent 1844.
- Interpretation: Explains Yan Huan’s remarks about Earth Beasts as the integration of warmth, wisdom, and strength rather than separate traits 1684.

Relationships
- Yan Huan — Companion, intended assassination target in the earlier era, and later the recipient of her romantic confession. She protects him as a spirit and greets him with affection, but the supplied account does not establish a reciprocated romance 1655 1656 1692 1782 1791.
