The trusted guard at the gate already knew Chen Yuan. Smiling, he said, "Since it's Guard Chen, come with me."

He knew the steward thought highly of this young man, so he led Chen Yuan straight inside without announcing him.

"Steward, Chen Yuan requests an audience," the trusted guard called from outside the door.

"Let him in," Li Song replied.

Chen Yuan pushed open the door and entered. The room was still simply and elegantly furnished: a large greenwood desk, a pot of hot tea on top, and several chairs beside it.

Seeing Chen Yuan, Li Song smiled. "Little Chen, it's been over a month, and you look even more spirited. I heard from the steward that your No. 6 Herb Garden had the least loss of them all last time."

Chen Yuan replied modestly, "You flatter me, Steward. I was only doing my duty."

Yet inwardly, he grew wary. It seemed most of the herb gardens had losses, perhaps an unwritten rule by now.

If he performed the best, he would stand out too much. Given time, that could easily breed resentment.

As the saying went, "The tallest tree catches the wind." He needed to figure out a way to rein things in a little.

Li Song laughed heartily and dropped the subject. "Little Chen, you came to see me this time because you have something to say, right?"
