Background

Chen Kai was born to Chen Dashan and Li roughly a year after Chen Dashan remarried following the death of Chen Yuan's mother. As Chen Yuan's younger half-brother, he received the best food, affection, and financial support in the Chen household, while Chen Yuan was expected to work at the docks. 1

His Grade D-High aptitude test at Green Pine Martial Hall convinced the family that he could elevate the Chen name through martial arts. Chen Kai embraced this expectation, telling Chen Yuan to support his training and regarding his half-brother's savings as a resource he deserved. 1 2

The cost of his training rapidly exhausted the family's savings. While training at Kaishan Martial Hall, he demanded more meat, Body Strengthening Soup, and silver; he also urged Chen Dashan to obtain two taels of Chen Yuan's subsidy, dismissing Chen Yuan's aptitude as undeserving of such resources. 18

When Chen Yuan challenged him at Kaishan Martial Hall, Chen Kai relied on his perceived advantages in funding and training conditions. After failing to land a decisive blow, he abandoned the rules of a friendly match and attacked Chen Yuan's throat and groin. During his recovery, Chen Kai became despondent over the widening gap between himself and Chen Yuan. News that the Gu Family had withdrawn Chen Yuan's funding restored his ambition, as he believed it gave him a chance to surpass his half-brother. 32

He later joined the Golden Blade Sect, which recruited martial artists with suitable bone structure and prior training by promising pills and advancement. Chen Kai fought ruthlessly in the sect's territorial conflicts against the Iron Palm Gang, seeking enough contributions and pills to reach the Great Completion of Skin Refining. 56

Personality

During the duel, Chen Kai launches a sustained series of lethal Stone-Splitting Palm attacks. Chen Yuan evades them, recognizes the flaws in Chen Kai's footwork and power transitions, then shatters his sternum with a single punch empowered by Elephant Bone. 59

As Chen Kai attempts to plead for mercy, Chen Yuan kicks his throat, shattering his larynx and killing him. His corpse and the signed contract are delivered to Chen Dashan and Li the following day. 59 60
