Background / History

Xiao Yu dated Jiang Ning for more than a year before he discovered her corpse in his final anatomy class. During their relationship, she imposed unusual rules: they met on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, she avoided red clothing and photographs, and she collected coins minted in 2018. 1

After her death, Xiao Yu continued protecting Jiang Ning from the shadows. She appeared with her Black Umbrella near the school, frightened hostile ghosts away from him, and later boarded the hearse-bus with him. After leaving at the Medical University stop, she was bound in iron chains and dragged back into the school, suggesting that her spirit was unable to escape the Experimental Building for long. 18 91

Xiao Yu eventually revealed that she had been injured and lost one of several bodies, forcing her to stay away from Jiang Ning to prevent the Great Fiend from observing him. Her early appearances were only fragments of her primordial soul, called forth through the Black Umbrella with Jiang Ning's blood. 169

Her connection with Jiang Ning predates their current lives by over 3,600 years. Eight of the nine corpses within the Nine Corpse Tower are her reincarnated forms; Jiang Ning was the youngest High Priest in Shang Dynasty history, while Xiao Yu is revered by the Ba Kingdom War Souls as a Wu, or great shaman priestess. 640 642

Xiao Yu is not merely imprisoned within the tower: she is its true Building Guardian and Lord, tasked with suppressing the Great Fiend beneath it. The burden of maintaining that seal restricts how long she can remain away from the tower. 1012 2017

Xiao Yu is gentle, affectionate, and attentive toward Jiang Ning. His injuries immediately provoke fear, grief, and fury in her; she repeatedly prioritizes stabilizing him or killing whoever harmed him. 168 458 1763

Despite her immense strength, she is careful about exposing her secrets. She avoids direct contact with the Secret Bureau because she suspects that a Great Fiend spy may be hidden within it, and she entrusts Jiang Ning to relay her position instead. 1361

Her duty to the Nine Corpse Tower is as important to her as her relationship with Jiang Ning. She willingly returns to reinforce its seal after major battles, even when it means she cannot remain by his side. 2017
