Background / History
Encounter with Ji Bai
Dugu Bo maintains a secluded residence at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, protected by a poisonous barrier. When Ji Bai breaks through the barrier and enters the springs, Dugu Bo assumes the intruder will die. He empties Ji Bai’s storage soul tool, throws its contents into the woods, and takes the tool for himself 34.
Ji Bai’s emergence from the springs overturns that assumption. Dugu Bo questions him about his identity, survival, and knowledge of the surrounding herbs. After identifying him as a Blazing Academy student, he uses the academy as leverage to demand obedience 35.
The confrontation changes when Ji Bai claims to have removed the toxins from Dugu Yan’s body. Dugu Bo initially conceals his knowledge of her poisoning, then agrees to release Ji Bai if his granddaughter confirms the treatment. Because her team is still traveling, this arrangement could keep Ji Bai there for nearly four months 35 36.
Detoxification and Cooperation
Seeking someone who can identify his medicinal herbs, Dugu Bo follows Ji Bai’s suggestion to contact the Break Clan through the Strength Clan. He threatens to hold Blazing Academy responsible if Ji Bai escapes during his absence. On returning, he notices changes in Ji Bai and suspects him of consuming another herb 36.
Ji Bai subsequently confronts Dugu Bo about the inherited toxins affecting his family and offers to detoxify him with Heart Fire. Dugu Bo submits despite fearing that the treatment could kill him. The process causes severe pain, but afterward his hair turns white, his complexion improves, and his former frailty diminishes 37.
Their relationship becomes cooperative. Dugu Bo helps hunt a thirty-thousand-year Immortal Bird and guards Ji Bai while he absorbs its soul ring. He later keeps the bird after Ji Bai revives it through fire, allowing it to roam near the Fire Spring 37 38.
Dugu Bo also allows Ji Bai to harvest medicinal herbs and use the well for cultivation. Ji Bai leaves him the Fragrant Silk Immortal Herb and explains its protective properties; Dugu Bo immediately verifies that its fragrant mist can neutralize his poison 38.
Herbs for Dugu Yan
In Heaven Dou City, Dugu Bo arranges for Titan to bring Yang Wudi to the Strength Clan. He exchanges illustrated herb records for Yang Wudi’s knowledge, while Yang Wudi gains his friendship without revealing the Break Clan’s secret medicinal formulas 41 42.
When Dugu Yan returns, Dugu Bo personally checks her meridians, flesh, blood, and bones, confirming that Ji Bai has removed her toxins. He refuses to retaliate against Ji Bai for defeating her, explains the Dugu family’s secret, and gives her an unnamed celestial herb selected for her cultivation. At her request, he also provides Dragon Blood Ganoderma for Yu Tianheng 51.
Heaven Dou Royal Academy Incident
Prince Xue Xing asks Dugu Bo to punish the Shrek students for beating Xue Beng. Although annoyed by the request, Dugu Bo agrees to intervene and brings Ji Bai along. At the academy, he suppresses the Shrek group with his Title Douluo pressure and Jade Phosphorus poison, while deliberately sparing Ning Rongrong out of respect for the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect 53 54.
During the confrontation, Dugu Bo recognizes Xiao Wu as a transformed hundred-thousand-year soul beast. He abandons the dispute over royal dignity and demands that she remain, seeking her soul ring and soul bone 54.
Ji Bai privately reveals that Tang San is Tang Hao’s son and warns of retaliation. Unwilling to risk his life, Dugu Bo releases the Shrek group and warns the academy’s committee members against acting on Xiao Wu’s identity. Back at his manor, he regrets losing such valuable resources, which he had considered saving for Dugu Yan 55.
Despite that disagreement, his bond with Ji Bai strengthens when the younger soul master demonstrates the ability to copy his appearance and poison. Dugu Bo is delighted that Ji Bai trusts him with such an important secret 55.
Later Activities
Dugu Bo tolerates Ji Bai bringing six companions to cultivate at the well, although he complains that his residence has become Ji Bai’s “back garden.” After hearing how Ji Bai lured Tang Hao into the springs and killed him, he becomes even more cautious about their destructive power 62 63.
He initially advises Ji Bai to postpone entering the academy tournament because Spirit Hall is fielding three Soul Kings. Ji Bai’s revelation that he is already a level fifty-two Soul King—and possesses a translucent, self-generated fifth soul ring—leaves Dugu Bo astonished 63.
When Ji Bai later seeks help obtaining his seventh soul ring, Dugu Bo is unavailable: his servants report that he and Dugu Yan have been traveling and training for a year. His poison formation remains active around the secluded valley, killing an approaching soul master during Ji Bai’s later breakthrough 93 108.
Appearance
- Before detoxification: Green hair, a gaunt, skeletal build, and a gloomy, frail appearance; wears a dark green robe during treatment 37.
- After detoxification: White hair, a ruddier complexion, and a noticeably healthier appearance; wears a white robe while guarding Ji Bai’s soul-ring absorption 37.
- Later attire and expression: Appears in a dark green robe at Dugu Manor, where his normally cold face softens into a rare gentle smile while entertaining Ji Bai 52.
Personality
Dugu Bo is proud, volatile, and accustomed to solitude. His reputation makes Titan exceptionally cautious when hosting him, and he declines a luncheon because he dislikes dining with strangers. He also resents interruptions to his leisure, even when the visitor is someone to whom he owes a favor 42 53.
His affection for Dugu Yan strongly influences his decisions. He seeks herbs to improve her cultivation, respects her attachment to Yu Tianheng despite his reservations, and refuses to punish Ji Bai once he confirms the benefit of his treatment. He explicitly tells her that they cannot be ungrateful to someone who has helped their family 38 51.
With Ji Bai, his sternness gives way to teasing, exasperation, and genuine warmth. Their exchanges include mock threats, arguments over herbs, and friendly banter. Nevertheless, his fondness does not eliminate his greed: he initially insists on taking Xiao Wu despite Ji Bai’s objections, withdrawing only when Tang Hao’s possible retaliation makes the risk unacceptable 38 42 54 55.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphorus Poison
- Releases deadly green poisonous mist and condenses poison energy at his fingertips 54.
- Uses poison alongside his aura to suppress opponents, leaving weaker soul masters unable to resist and making their soul power nearly stagnant 54.
- Establishes protective barriers and formations around his secluded residence; safe entry requires a separate passage known to those inside 35 108.
- His lingering toxins worsen Tang Hao’s existing injuries when the latter enters the well’s surroundings 57.
- Limitations: Ji Bai’s flames can destroy his outer poison barrier, while the Fragrant Silk Immortal Herb renders his released poison ineffective 35 38.
Title Douluo Power
- His pressure overwhelms the Soul Saints of the Shrek group; the academy’s three Soul Douluo committee members can resist only briefly 54.
- Can selectively withhold pressure, sparing Ning Rongrong and reducing the danger to the girls beside her 54.
- Flies between Sunset Forest and Heaven Dou City and moves rapidly from his cliffside cave to the valley below 36 37.
- Limitations: He cannot safely remain beside the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well indefinitely, much less enter its waters without protection. He also avoids confrontation with Tang Hao 34 55 63.
Perception and Poison Assessment
- Recognizes Xiao Wu’s transformed soul-beast nature at a glance, perceiving the aura and silhouette beneath her human appearance 54.
- Uses soul power to inspect Dugu Yan’s meridians and confirm that her flesh, blood, and bones are free of poison 51.
- Notices changes in Ji Bai after a brief absence and checks the surrounding herbs for evidence of consumption 36.
