He wanted to play against that "God of Go" as a human and see where the limits of his abilities lay.

Fujiwara no Sai: "Its skill at Go is simply too powerful, so powerful that other players can scarcely hope to reach it."
Fujiwara no Sai: "When faced with a player like that, all I feel is excitement and joy, because on the path of Go, there is someone I need to pursue with all my strength."
That was Fujiwara no Sai's view, as well as his understanding of the AI that would emerge in the future.
He regarded AI as a Go player, the strongest player to have ever appeared throughout history. Its skill far surpassed that of any player humanity had ever produced, and every Go player lived beneath its shadow.
Before such an existence, he felt neither unease nor reverence. All he felt was excitement and joy.
