Formation and Organization

Nick Fury recruited James Murphy for the Avengers Initiative as part of a plan to gather powerful but difficult-to-control individuals against alien threats. Murphy accepted only after securing autonomy for his own team, an independent base, and S.H.I.E.L.D. acting as liaison rather than commander 270 271.

Murphy argued that Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and himself were too different to operate under a single chain of command. The resulting structure divided the Avengers into three mutually restraining teams, intended to prevent one ideological conflict from splitting the entire organization 271 272 282.

By the time of the conflict with the sorcerers and the Infinity Stones, Murphy was effectively directing the Avengers' broader strategy. He envisioned the group evolving from an Earth-based team into an “Avengers Alliance” able to intervene against cosmic and multiversal threats 442.

History

Avengers Initiative

Fury presented the initiative to Murphy after identifying the need for a defense force capable of responding to alien invasions. Murphy accepted but refused subordination to the World Security Council or S.H.I.E.L.D.; Fury agreed to a separate Avengers base and a three-team structure 270 271.

Tony Stark and Steve Rogers later accepted the arrangement. Stark agreed to construct an Earth-based headquarters using one of Howard Stark's abandoned warehouses, while Murphy planned a second base on the far side of the Moon 282.

Battle of New York

The Avengers' first major operation began with Loki's theft of the Tesseract and the Chitauri invasion. Their initial deployment on the Helicarrier was undermined by Loki's manipulation, Hawkeye's attack, and conflict among the members while exposed to the Scepter's mind-altering radiation 291 292.

After the Helicarrier crisis, Murphy openly criticized the team's poor communication and lack of coordination. The group regrouped in New York, where Captain America assumed battlefield command and assigned roles according to each member's strengths 293 297.

Murphy coordinated Ravager Fighters at the portal while the Ghost Battleship engaged the Chitauri mothership. The Avengers captured Loki, secured the Scepter, stopped the invasion, and survived a nuclear missile launched by the World Security Council without Fury's approval 297 299.

Legal Recognition and Early Missions

Following the Battle of New York, the World Security Council granted the Avengers legal status and the right to act independently. Murphy claimed the Tesseract for use as a Moon Base energy source, while S.H.I.E.L.D. retained Loki's Scepter for study 300.

The team's second designated combat mission concerned Aldrich Killian and the Ten Rings Gang. Although Stark initially confronted the threat alone with Murphy providing remote support, the Avengers later arrived to help clear the remaining Extremis Soldiers 306 311.

The organization fractured again when Murphy refused to join Rogers' rescue operation for Earth's survivors. Rogers led Thor, Falcon, Winter Soldier, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Hawkeye; Stark departed with Black Widow, Rhodey, and Banner, while Murphy focused on other threats 376.

Expansion of the Roster

S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel were later reassigned to support Avengers Base, with Phil Coulson's team becoming an Avengers operational unit 441.

The Guardians of the Galaxy formally joined as the fourth squad after Star-Lord consulted his team. Their knowledge of Thanos, Titan, and interstellar warfare became central to the Avengers' preparations 441.

Murphy subsequently recruited Doctor Strange and directed Rogers to bring Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver into the organization. The Avengers also established cooperation with Earth's sorcerers against multiversal threats 442 444.

Global and Cosmic Operations

Murphy convened a Global Summit at the Moon Base, using the Avengers' military strength to pressure Earth's governments to end wars and accept the Avengers as Earth's representative in cosmic matters 448.
