After speaking, Gavin silently locked eyes with William.
William, upon meeting Gavin's gaze, quickly lowered his head, not daring to look at him again.
Nearby, seeing William remain silent, Eugene spat on the ground and irritably slapped the body of the Tyrannosaurus.
"Bullshit."
He leaned against the Tyrannosaurus and said.
"Do you think you're filming Saving Private Ryan? You want us to run back to Ennis Town to play some inexplicable hero just to save your brother, who has likely already turned into a zombie?"
"Screw that. Movies are all lies. If you want to go, go yourself. Consider this Old Ford a gift from me; I'm not going to go crazy with you!"
With that, Eugene let go of the Tyrannosaurus and rubbed his short red hair vigorously.
Afterward, he paced around irritably twice before speaking to Gavin.
"Let him go, damn it. Let him drive my piece-of-junk car. Give him whatever he wants, and let him eat a few extra bites at dinner, that bastard!"
"Alright, Eugene, let William think it over himself."
Gavin shook his head, then rose and headed toward the RV.
Halfway there, he turned back to rummage through the pickup, grabbed a large bottle of juice, and carried it into the RV.
Passing Old Mac, who was watching the scene, Gavin spoke to him in passing.
"Old Mac, you aren't asleep yet, are you? Go get some sleep while you can."
"You got it. I'll sleep in the driver's seat; call me if anything happens."
Old Mac agreed, followed Gavin into the RV, and closed the door behind him.
Since Eugene hadn't followed, he clearly still had things to say to William, so it was best to give them some space.
Seeing Gavin board the vehicle, Doris turned around and asked him with concern.
"Are we... are we still going into Ennis Town?"
"Don't worry. Even if we do go to explore Ennis Town, I won't be taking you. You just stay in the RV and focus on cooking; make breakfast and lunch. I have to rely on you for that."
Gavin waved a hand at Doris, then sat on the sofa and watched Madison lie down in the driver's seat.
While adjusting his position, Madison thought for a moment and spoke to Gavin.
"Actually, we really should go to Ennis for a look. After all, a large group of zombies has already been lured away from there. Besides, if we want to survive the apocalypse, we'll have to explore various towns sooner or later."
Having said that, Madison looked back at the mother and daughter nearby who were pricking up their ears to eavesdrop, and continued with a smile.
"With the little bit of stuff we've scavenged, we won't last a week. Plus, there are two more women now; we didn't think to grab women's supplies when we were raiding that convenience store."
In the distance, hearing this, Doris turned toward the oven in embarrassment.
Winnie pursed her lips in a smile and gave Madison a thumbs-up.
As for Gavin.
Listening to Madison's point, he nodded and smiled.
"True. Just based on the fact that a large horde has been lured away from Ennis Town, I wouldn't mind going there to look around and gain experience for the exploration missions we're bound to undertake in the future."
"As long as we ensure the vehicles aren't compromised, maintain our distance from them during exploration, and secure our retreat routes, I think the chances are decent."
"Besides, even setting aside the women's supplies, we do need to stock up on medicine. Ennis, with a large portion of its zombies drawn away, is actually quite suitable for us to practice."
"But unfortunately, William has a hundred ways to persuade me, yet he chose the one I absolutely cannot agree to."
"Expect a group of us to risk our lives for his brother, who is dead or alive? What a joke. We haven't even established a barely stable camp yet; how could we do something so stupid? How did he even become a police officer? Did Batman write him a recommendation letter? Fuck!"
As his voice trailed off, Gavin sneered and shook his head.
Seeing this, Madison nodded and laughed.
"You're right. We definitely shouldn't throw our lives away for something so foolish. Even if we were originally going to explore Ennis, after he made that request, we shouldn't go near there anymore."
"He's only just met us and he's already trying to drag us into risking our lives for him. What would happen if we knew him for a few more days? Would he have us become his lackeys? That shitty Dallas intern cop!"
As he finished, Madison tapped the headrest and smiled.
"I'm going to sleep, Boss. Wake me up when you need me."
"Mm, sleep easy. I'm here."
Gavin patted the back of the chair to reassure Madison, then reached out toward Winnie.
"And you, kid, give me the binoculars."
"Actually, I can stand watch for you, Boss."
Winnie teased as she leaned toward Gavin and shoved the binoculars into his hand. Gavin ruffled her blonde hair and shook his head.
"If you're that bored, go lie down on the bed."
"Alright then."
Winnie nodded, left Gavin, and obediently headed toward the sleeping area.
Yet, as she climbed into bed, she couldn't help but let her gaze linger on the photograph at the head of the bed.
The photo showed their family; her father's smile and her brother's mischievous wink appeared in Winnie's mind.
Winnie couldn't help but wrinkle her nose. She crawled over to take the photo down, tucked it face-down into the corner of the headboard, and then curled up on the bed without a sound.
With that, the RV fell completely silent, leaving only the sounds of Doris moving about and cooking.
And, of course, the occasional sobbing from Doris.
Gavin sighed. He couldn't forbid others from being weak just because he was strong enough himself.
After all, the apocalypse had only descended a few hours ago. Everyone in this makeshift team carried their own pain and pressure, even Madison.
Clatter!
Suddenly, the RV door was yanked open. Eugene came over to Gavin, cursing under his breath, and plopped down.
Glancing at the driver's seat, Eugene grinned and said.
"Big Black is asleep too, haha. I thought he was as strong as King Kong."
"Fuck you, Eugene, I'm not asleep yet!"
Madison lay there, raised his middle finger, and cursed slowly.
Hearing this, Eugene scoffed and said.
"Alright, go to sleep. I'm here to take the watch for you!"
"You? Taking the watch just to drool all over yourself? If you drink too much soda, go pee, don't let the water leak out of your mouth, man!"
Madison retorted while rolling over to find a more comfortable position to rest.
Eugene, however, sat there restlessly, unable to stop moving his legs every few minutes.
Twenty minutes later, Eugene looked at William outside the window and couldn't help but curse.
"He's just sitting there? In this cold? What a fucking idiot!"
Another thirty-something minutes passed.
Eugene rubbed his head and asked Gavin in a low voice.
"Quarterback, you don't think he's actually going to head back to Ennis on his own, do you? He hasn't really lost his mind, has he?"
Another half hour passed.
Eugene stood up irritably, took a look at Doris, and cursed gloomily.
"This stew takes forever. If it weren't for the smell, I wouldn't even want to eat breakfast, damn it!"
After saying that, Eugene grumbled as he walked into the bathroom, staying inside for a while before coming out.
Returning to the sofa, Eugene glanced at the silent Gavin, seemingly wanting to say something.
After five full minutes of silence, Eugene slapped his thigh and said sharply to Gavin.
"Quarterback, you already gave the USP back to William. What about my Ruger 101 and Governor Shotgun? I don't feel safe without those things!"
"Oh?"
Hearing this, Gavin finally responded. He looked at Eugene with deep, piercing eyes and asked.
"Have you finally decided to risk your life with him?"
"What?"
Eugene was triggered by Gavin's words. He shook his head frantically and said hurriedly.
"Don't lump me in with that idiot. Who the hell wants to deal with him? Do I need a reason to want my own guns back?"
"Stop messing around, Quarterback. It's the fucking apocalypse out there. How am I supposed to live without a gun? At least give me a knife; I can't exactly bite back at the fucking zombies!"
With that, Eugene stared into Gavin's eyes, waiting for an answer.
Gavin pondered for a moment, then nodded and said.
"Let's wait until we've eaten. I'll return your guns."
"It's a deal!"
Eugene was overjoyed and slapped his thigh in excitement.
However, after the excitement passed, he hurriedly continued to explain to Gavin.
"Don't get any ideas, man. I'm not the type to go looking for death. Even if you're stupid enough to agree to William's request, I'll ditch you and go it alone!"
"You think I want the guns to risk my life with that kid? You've got to be kidding me. You've got me all wrong; I'm definitely not that kind of person!"
"I just lack a sense of security, you know what a sense of security is, right?"
